I am. Oticimg that most tiny off roaring camper company's are selling their trailers for 20 to 45 grand. Crazy high prices for these very tiny off road type camper trailers. Could just go buy a big 24 to 30 door long huge trailers for that kind of money. I will just spend 3,500.00 to 4 grand on a rooftop tent to install on a bed rack on my 2023 Tacoma TRD OR model 4x4 truck. Then get my naval officer son to help me find a old military trailer to build out to hold my camping gear and a n electric mtn bicycle or a small enduro style motorcycle.

Picked up a Jayco Baja for $5500 that'll do everything this will and sleep a family comfortable. Have a dual 6v setup with 260w of solar, water purification, outside shower, propane/electric/diesel heaters, 3 beds, indoor AND outdoor kitchen, and platform for my ATV or bikes. Added a rear hitch to also take my boat to the lake. That isn't a bad trailer, but it's too spendy for what little you get.

Most folks scoffing at the price have never towed an RV Off-road. They come apart at the seams shockingly quick. Mind you, I'm talking trails, not dirt roads. I'd rather pay once for a trailer up to the challenge than destroy several that weren't and be out the total investment. If state parks is all you plan to visit there are plenty of options to do this cheaper.

if that's the case, they need to improve their efficiency. no way it costs 4.5k in materials unless they sourced the most expensive stuff possible and didn't negotiate. stainless steel sheet metal is 0.95-1.45 per pound right now. I'd estimate COGS@std at like 1.5-2k max. You can straight up buy an ATV with an engine and moving parts for 4.5k.

spons1982 you’re forgetting labor for the people building it, or do you work for free?
@spons1982
@spons1982 4 жыл бұрын
No, i'm not. Modern assembly is relatively inexpensive via automation and assembly lines. Those also aren't expenses calculated in COGS@standard. Typical mark-up on manufacturing items as they go from manufacturer to dealer/distributor is 30-50%, which covers the operating costs you're talking about and allows a bit of margin. What we see here is an initial markup of likely 400% with more dealer/distributor markup on top of that, likely from estimated volume being low. I think the thing they didn't account for was that they are forcing volume to be low by offering at such steep prices well outside the range of most American families. You could straight up buy a new vehicle for the same amount complete with actual engine, electronics, software, etc. these folks are crazy.

For $27.5k, this thing should be made from carbon fiber, have electric motors in the hubs to power the trailer for rock climbing, a battery pack to power the electric motors, a small generator to run electronics, hvac system for year round use, and should hydraulically raise the roof when parked to have dual beds and a small shower toilet combo.
@KTMcaptain
@KTMcaptain 4 жыл бұрын
Mike Boysen lol, you think you need an over priced trailer to camp? I got news for you. That thing is dead weight. It’s for wealthy older individuals whom dream of hitting the elements yet never will. Good luck pulling a 1 ton unpowered object up and over terrain a good 4x4 could barely make it up. But who am I to stop you from experiencing those warm and fuzzy feelings of buyers remorse when you realize how much a liability 2000lbs of dead weight is on an actual trail.
@KTMcaptain
@KTMcaptain 4 жыл бұрын
Mike Boysen it’s actually called a long-tail strategy. Based off statistical distributions. Businesses typically go for products that reach 1 to maybe 2 standard deviations away from the mean (vast majority of people). These strategies are the opposite, and go for customers in the tail of the distributions opposed to the bell(2-3 sd) as they are not being represented. Problem is that there is little economies of scale there. Meaning you design a product and have few customers to distribute fixed costs over as well as paying more for materials. They are also probably trying to offload their higher fixed costs with variable costs, which raises marginal cost, so that they can scale with demand. If they invested into a production facility they could dramatically lower marginal costs, but would run the risk of not selling enough units while having to maintain the fixed costs. Which is a huge problem of long tail strategies for physically produced goods. It’s generally a poor business decision which is why you don’t see large firms doing it, but the risk can be very rewarding. Here is the kicker. In these strategies, marginal revenue has to be dramatically higher than marginal cost in order to be profitable, so it’s easy to build the product at a profit(MR>MC). Which means if the market expands, then firms will enter and reduce economic profit. All of this has nothing to do with the fact that it’s a useless trailer. It’s too heavy and unpowered to make it over difficult objects, and too small for leisure camping. Better off getting a used motor home and flat towing your rig. For the size of this trailer, an alloy frame with carbon composite body would make it far more useful. Give the wheels the gift of torque so it could actually pull it’s own weight and it wouldn’t be such a huge liability off road. Hence the original comment. Either way, this is a super niche product that is heavily dependent upon older males with $30k to blow on a tent wanting, not actually doing, to “overland.” I am sure that any halfway decent diy-er could build something similar for half the cost. Heck, I could buy a small enclosed trailer for a few grand and fairly easily build something comparable for 1/3rd the price. If you need to spend $27.5k on a couple conveniences while camping, then I feel bad for you. A quality tent takes only a few minutes to deploy with an inflatable mattress, or even a roof top tent.
@KTMcaptain
@KTMcaptain 4 жыл бұрын
Mike Boysen So you refuse to respond to the 1 ton boat anchor response for the second time, yet keep shifting the discussion towards economics. Lol. So I take it you don’t disagree with the fact that this trailer dramatically reduces off road capabilities. To the economics, it’s quite simple and is the reason why you don’t see large firms enter these niche markets. I already outlined why it’s a poor decision, but I’ll reiterate the key points. These firms are catering to very small markets. This means that fixed costs cannot be diluted across the products, and that materials to build it cost more. Because investing in production (automation, buildings, tooling) is quite risky, firms must depend on skilled labor. This raises marginal costs. Higher marginal costs means lower profit since profit = revenue - cost. The biggest risks are changing consumer landscapes and economic downturns. Either could cripple the firms ability to generate economic profit. Especially considering the nature of luxury goods. Enormous long term risk with relatively low reward = poor business decisions. Ultimately the market sees very high failure rates in niche businesses.
@KTMcaptain
@KTMcaptain 4 жыл бұрын
@Mike Boysen So your THIRD response that doesn't address the actual problems with product like these. That they're too heavy and dramatically reduce offroad capability despite them being intended for that. Ok then. I never attacked anyone about buying this. I find the price to be extremely unrealistic, just like I find the price of a Ferrari to be as such. I would never attack someone for overspending. My original comment simply states what the product would have to be for me to justify spending that much money on it. You're the one attacking people for being shocked by how overpriced this product is. Clearly you have become very defensive over your intended purchase that you're displaying classical signs of cognitive dissonance (irrationally thinking people are attacking you is a strong indicator.) You consistently try to change the argument from "a business charging too much" to "why don't you build it yourself." Anyone with a remote understanding of business operations realizes the high cost of prototyping, so only an angry troll would try and conflate a finished product that should be streamlined with an inefficient prototype. By all means, buy a $30k trailer that will heavily restrict your movements. I couldn't care less about your financial planning. But stop crying about how others have a different opinion than yourself. Even your own asinine comment about how people are predictable for posting that this price is outrageous shows that you're trying to convince yourself that this is a good purchase. That's also extremely hypocritical of you to accuse me of attacking people when you have engaged in multiple threads attacking others for simply stating the price is too high. What? No cute comment about my "wood" or "size" like in the other thread. It must be a sad life to motivate one to go onto youtube and troll others for simply posting their thoughts.

I think these trailers are great. It would be so cool hitching one of these up to my truck. We have owned a few campers and I wonder what my wife would say if I sunk north of 20k on a camper that provides no toilet. Does anyone ever consider you have to take a dump from time to time? Yep, I have done my share of crapping in the woods (I would not expect my wife to). But if I am spending this kind of money I'm gonna crap in comfort. Oh, that's right you can pitch another tent for your porta potty. Hmm so I spend all this money because I am tired of tent camping then I have to pitch a tent anyway to take a dump. Like I said these are great and probably best for younger people. I'm 58 and at this stage I think having a decent crapper is not too much to ask for. I just wonder how many people buy a camper like this because they are crazy cool looking and have everything (well almost everything), get to where they are going, cook a great meal in that fantastic kitchen then later after processing that meal wondering; Oh crap!

BTW, they said no wood? Aren't the interior walls and cabinets plywood as I saw in the video? An invitation for mold and mildew. The Expedition 2.0 Squareback trailers by Off Grid trailers are much better suited for off road use. Build using no wood products, it's all metal composite and insulated. Totally customizable. I agree with you, fellow Texan to hot to not have A/C. I have researched this trailer a while back, and not sure but think it can be had with A/C. I like these size trailers for overlanding and off-road. I am near Corpus Christi, and enjoy traveling up and down Padre Island National Seashore. This trailers and a few others like them would be excellent, and not sink in the sand. So I enjoy surf fishing without the hassle of getting stuck. Not to hijack TFL, but there is another company out of Utah called "Bean trailers." Trailers are all fiberglass construction not wood, built for overlanding. A/C can be ordered on these.

@JamesSmullins 4 жыл бұрын
@@danielhoegler2062 for the price I would expect to not have to order ac. And something I didn't like and in your usage with being on the beach it would be worse is the bed taking up the entire interior. Can you imagine how much sand you would bring to bed with you? It needs enough area inside the door so that you can close it, change out of wet, sandy or muddy cloths and then get to the bed. Maybe put a super single if two people or a single for one person instead of the fill every inch of space queen size they come with.

Ironic title considering most people find the price overwhelming. Thus they would need to keep their jobs in order to pay for it. :) And while I say.. too each their own, this is def. not my thing either. But for the purpose of what you are going for, I reckon it is ideal for your show. More power to you. :)

It would be great to add a popup section to the roof so you could stand up in the trailer. I know you would have to remove the roof rack bars and the popup would only occupy a central portion of the roof, but being able to stand up and put on overclothes before going out in the snow or rain would be great. Relative to GT500's post, the chassis might need reinforcement if you cut the roof.

No thank you. It’s a nice trailer, but at that price point, I’d rather get a leftover 2018 Jeep JL Wranger that’s sitting on the dealer lots.

I can get a Geo Pro 12SRK for $10k. Hmmm, tough decision. I think I'll go with air conditioning, being in SE TX and all. I understand the attraction though. We have the record for offshore racing boats that have never been offshore at all. And off road rigged up Jeeps that have just driven through a yard or two.

But are they off road capable? People are paying for mobility and convenience, which is difficult to pair together cheaply.

Hey, Alex (very handsome). Love the idea of an "off-road" camper. Maybe not for rock climbing, but at least off-pavement down a dirt road that is not the slide in pick-up camper my dad had. $27k = ouch, think much better 5th-wheels can be found at that price.

I don't know what's worse the $28,000 dollar price tag or the fact that I've seen so many people towing this con artist on two wheels down the highway. When i saw them i always thought hmmm thats a sweet little off road trailer....Wonder what that pretty little thing goes for? My honest guess was $7,000-$10,000 and i would still consider that to be over priced! Boy was I off! Id take my $500 10x10 kodiak canvas tent which takes about 15 mins to set up and 10 mins to break down, and even though Im 6ft-2 I can easily stand up in it with room and comfort to spare. With all that extra money I saved I can go out and get me a Polaris Ranger 1000XP crew cab and a new trailer to tow it with! I can collect firewood on the property with it, I can tow the flail mower with it, I can plow with it in the winter, I can throw my wife, dogs, and camp gear in the back seat with my Rifle and my yeti in the front seat... ;) while listening to some Merle and George Straight on a Mountain trail that would have long put an end to anybody towing that yuppie mobile! To each his own I guess...

What is it with these tiny trailer companies that price their minimalist trailers the same as a 30 foot luxury trailer? The first company to price these things realistically will take over this market.

I've been researching trailers and so far the only one that's the most appealing to me is the High Altitude Trailer. I haven't contacted them yet but I do like the one piece tub design and what appears to be metal plate on the actual trailer before the tub goes on. THEN the wood goes on. If I'm seeing all that correctly, that seems like the best option for longevity and less possibility of wood rot from driving in snow country and dealing with mag chloride. The second thing I like is the front 2/3rds of it is coated with rhino liner or some form of it👍 highaltitudetrailer.com/features-options/
