I would like to mention it’s probably important to have a variety of the primary colors , This way you can capture your warm and cool colors . for example , ultra marine blue and a cobalt blue . This gives you your warm and cool temperatures. I do that with my yellow and red as well. And with burnt amber and white it’s all you need. Great lesson !

Is this palette good? Cool: Alizarin, Ultramarine Blue, Yellow Ochre Warm: Cad Red, Cobalt Blue, Cad Yellow With addition of Titanium White, Ivory Black, Transparent Oxide Red and Transparent Oxide Brown.

Do you mean like a split primary palette?

You can match almost any color with primaries and white. If not, it's close enough. Limiting yourself to those 4 colors force you to learn how to mix colors correctly. If you need blue to be warmer add in a little warm color into it. If you need red to be cooler add a little cool color. Get rid of all that extra color and focus on making them with the 4 and the colors will harmonize better and the values will look more correct when they are derived from each other rather than out a tube.

This exercise should help a lot of people. They can't think about painting the actual details in. So they'll have to find a way/solve how to make a large broad shape be a representation of multiple details in the location. A sort of place holder that still by itself can hold the painting up. Then hopefully they realize that it is AFTER spending the time to complete the painting with that large brush and getting as close as possible to the reference with it. That is the point that that we move from the broad shapes to the details. The exercise should wake up a lot of people's skills. When I started I kept running to put the details in because that what was I was familiar with in my brain. I kept running past the overall structure and form of the painting. The frame to which the details was suppose to be on. So every time my likeness was off even though I could paint the eyes, nose and mouth. The frame/foundation on which they sat on was a face of somebody else. It was until I held back from putting in details and decided to make broad shapes that represented multiple details, is when my likeness of portrait paintings/ landscapes shot through the roof. It was because I took the time to modify that frame to the likeness of the person. It was just frame of shapes that looked close to the person. Building the skill of arranging/finding shapes so that when we place them on the canvas they look like something our brain can register as something is one of the keys to painting. When we get to that point, we can then add the fine details that give those shapes their definition. If people do this exercise multiple times and limit themselves to that one brush and focus on the shapes that can make it closer to their reference, their skills will jump! In painting details is not what makes or breaks your painting. I hope this doesn't sound like gibberish lol.

that is why painting from the picture in the cold and windy weather is better. in the summer the mosquitoes and bees are annoying. i get to painting after this painting. never get tired of painting especially when you are my teacher!

My biggest problem has always been how can I fit all that scenery on a small canvas. Ten years ago I did a 8"×10" oil but have been to scared to do another, I feel I just got really lucky. Whoever comes to my home and view my bigger paintings, I always hear that the small one is my best one. But thanks to you I am going to start doing alot more, great video, love all of them.

G'day from Australia, Chris. Am probably old enough to be your grandfather, but when it comes to painting, I'm strictly a babe in the woods. As a lifelong, retired teacher I really admire your teaching technique - I relate to it very much. Firm, frank, warm and intelligent - yes painting is thinking! Oh yes and I really like your understated humour - very Aussie, if I may say that. Your tips are great, and I am trying to use them to change my blandscapes into landscapes! Each lesson brings fresh light on subjects I've never really understood. Thanks Coach - what's more you lead from the front - I really respect your ability as an artist. My jaw drops sometimes at what you produce seemingly so effortlessly. I take copious, mainly mental notes. At present my work is in acrylics (I find them very forgiving and I need heaps of that) but I aspire to oils one day if I last that long and if I can muster the courage. The most fun I've ever had painting was following this advice, using a huge brush and way more paint that I usually do. It's one of my favorite paintings, too. This is such a good reminder as I've been getting a little bogged down with so many aspects to painting that I haven't grasped yet- I'll be revisiting this technique in my next practice :)

I think I didn’t realize that I may have had them too light forgetting that trees should have some of the darker values in the painting. Great tip!

A small painting with a big brush is a great idea! using my brush with spinning, corners, edges! blue crimson, white. enough paint on a palette. rock and mountain color. saturated? does not understand saturated. warm green. local color-green+blue. red makes less vibrate. more option=confusing. vertical brush strokes, add purple for shadow. cool the tree, ground value=lighter. hill and mountain darker. horizon brushwork on grass fields. simplify the grass. shoreline darker blue. variety of shapes. pine tree first dark then lighter value. light of the tree not too dark. sky holes.

Hi Chris, This was very enlighting, and I plan on taking the challenge of relaxing my paint strokes - during winter break from work. I've been drawing off-and-on since I was 2 years-old and am now 70. In 2012, I did my first portrait oil painting. Because I am very detailed and it was an unfamiliar medium - it was more stressful than fun! I didn't attempt oils again until 2019 - painting 3 portraits since then until earlier this year. I did fairly well if I do say so myself but feel I could always do better, lol. Landscapes are awkward for me as well. Again, this lesson appears to be a great way to help me to not be so tight. it's interesting seeing what you do and don't emphasize/exaggerate. when i watched you paint, i was thinking to myself "wait a minute... that color looks nothing like the one in the photo!" but then when i look at your finished product, i see that i enjoy the more exaggerated planes, forms, and colors in your painting than the ones in the photo. "that's the point!" i know haha. maybe you could make a video (if you haven't already, idk) about emphasis and discerning which shapes, colors, etc. to emphasize and which ones to leave alone. i need to abandon my fidelity to photographs!! thanks for all the help.
