We've finished installing insulation in half of the building and continued installing OSB sheathing on the walls as we continue turning our Quonset hut into a proper wood working shop. This will be an ongoing video series. Please subscribe to our channel if you want to follow along with the project! +AMDG

The metal shield between the insulation is a space. In the event of a very cold weather, the condensation of cold elements will penetrate metal shield and form droplets. It will drop into the insulation. This can cause undue problems with molds overtime. Since this is covered, it is unseen to our eyes. Do you see this as a problem ? Do you have remedies to address this concern ? I'm interested to know your opinion.

Loving the videos so far, any structural issues on the metal holding up the weight of the framing and all that sheathing? And how's the building holding up now? Anything you would have done differently? Thank you for sharing!

I am looking to use an S series hut for insulated buildings. Why did you go with batts, vs rigid insulation? Did you give any thought to blowing air up between the metal skin and the insulation, in order to keep it dry? If you have seen condensation on the floor & tools, it has to be on the metal someplace also.

should have sheet it in block format and it would have covered your imperfections in how you framed it.

Question.....How did all of your insulation turn out and are you having any issues with moisture? I have this same style building same size but just a little taller. Thank you for your time.

I have one my wife and I are turning into a house. Her grandfather had it built in 2013. The house we were living in burnt down (no insurance) so we decided to make the hut our home. We have been blessed with donations from various people and groups but most of the expenses are out of pocket. Anyway, i have two questions. One: in our building water condenses on the ribs on the ceiling, sometimes not often so we figured spray foam would be the safest bet so nothing gets water damage and mold. Did your building not sweat? Two: side wall Windows. In all bed rooms we're required to have a window big enough to get out through. How do I frame a rough opening to the ribs and then seal it. I can't afford $8500 for 4 prefab frames it's out of the question

I am thinking of building a home out of one of these. Your videos have given me more courage to go forward with that. However I was going to use the thick insulation you find in metal warehouses. I don’t know what it’s called but I have put it up in metal buildings before. It’s the kind with the thick tarp like white backing. Anyways lol if you know what I am talking about, did you ever consider covering just the bottom of your hut and doing that kind of insulation on the roof? I was looking for some kind of insightful opinions on that. I thought it could eliminate some of the time I would spend putting up plywood, as the insulation I mentioned is aesthetically pleasing, with its white coloration. I have yet to figure out if it’s even cost effective to do that, but it might be worth it.

It seems that there are a lot more people building homes like this, so there should be plenty of resources for you. We didn't build our quonset hut - it was on our farm already when we bought it. The main driver for how we've approached doing the inside was money. We've been trying to do it on a very frugal budget. I'm sure contacting a company like Steelmaster would give you all the answers you might need for building one of these as a home. They're doing it everyday and would likely have better answers than I would. Best wishes for building your home!

Great videos..I've got a silly question? In your first snow video, you have a tractor that looks like a Mahindra..is it? If it is, can you tell me if you like it? Also have watched "Norm" who inspired me to become a woodworker. I love working with wood and carving. I especially love carving tupelo which I actually buy from your state.

Yes, it is a Mahindra, and we do like it. Been a great little tractor for us. We've certainly put it through its paces and have had no issues 😉. Your comment brings back a fond memory from our first home - we had a huge black tupelo tree in our front yard. Such a beautiful tree. Thanks and God bless!

I realize you're building the framing in 8 foot sections to move some of your storage stuff from one end to the other.... but would it help tie everything together more if you staggered a few of the joints on the OSB? So that not all the joints end on a straight vertical plane and all the OSB ends don't end at the ends of the 8 foots framing sections? Maybe instead of using an 8 foot length of OSB, throw in a 4 foot length where you are now, so some of joints are staggered. I know that this method is used on sheathing a roof or floor, but didn't know if it would be applicable to your build, also. It may also not work too well, since you are building as you go down the run, in stages.

Patrick, I went back and forth about exactly what you suggest. In most builds that is absolutely the way to do it - staggering the sheathing. I opted against on this one and am glad that I did because of some of the problems we are running into because of the shape and the fact that the metal building was not put together square or plumb.

the metal has to have condensation in between roof and fiberglass batt on the roof and would eventually cause problems?
@StIsidoresFarm
@StIsidoresFarm 7 жыл бұрын
It's possible, but in the two years we've been in the space, we've never seen condensation on the metal inside. The space won't be heated continuously, only when we are in there, and we will have an attic fan pulling air out from between the interior framing and metal. Additionally, we plan to run a dehumidifier in the space with a humidistat. Beyond that, I'm not terribly concerned about the minimal amounts of condensation that might occasionally build up - it should just run down the galvanized metal to the ground and drain outside. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@StIsidoresFarm

I should add that the insulation is not in contact with the metal anywhere. Fairly generous air gap all the way around due to the design of the building.

any problems with condensation?
@StIsidoresFarm
@StIsidoresFarm 7 жыл бұрын
Good question. We've talked about it in the comments on different videos. We probably need to make one about condensation specifically, because it is a frequent question. The short answer is, no. Long answer is that we've just never seen condensation on the metal in the building, and we don't believe the framing and insulation is going to suddenly cause it to exist. Hope this helps!

Amateur question here... why not use the sheet rock/mudding technique instead of the sheathing wood?
@StIsidoresFarm
@StIsidoresFarm 7 жыл бұрын
Not an amateur question at all. We're using sheathing because it is going to be a shop. We'll be attaching things to walls all over the place so we can use the structure of the OSB. It's also cheaper in the end.

what was the cost for lumber and insulation ?
@StIsidoresFarm
@StIsidoresFarm 6 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the delay in reply. I'd have to go look, but we got everything at Lowe's Home Improvement. So 2x4 studs were running about $2 each, and we bought the insulation at 10% off during a sale. OSB runs about $10-11 a sheet.

SPRAY FOAM IS THE ONLY WAY TO GO! The metal sweats, in temperature changes! So if you don't spray foam it and seal the metal on the inside it well sweat, and rot lumber, panels and the insulation with soak up the water and rot and fall threw
@StIsidoresFarm
@StIsidoresFarm 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. I've commented on other videos in this series that we haven't had any issues with condensation at this point. With the air space in between, and a fan pulling air, it isn't an issue. Bigger issue for us was cost. Spray foam is expensive, and we still would have built an interior structure to put up shelves, etc. This seemed the most cost effective and best solution for our purposes and is working great. Blessings to you and yours!

Great work guys but I don't see these Quanset huts lending themselves to this kind of finish. Way too much work to do all that framing and insulating with batts. Spray foam insulation and just some straight framed side walls is the only way that would not be insanity making for me. Too bad you Q-hut wasn't that type with straight side walls in the first place but good job carrying on to the finish line.
