Hey Mark. I decided to actually buy your course. I wont lie, I been like doing research on you and besides your awesome taeching style which has stuck to me ever since your video on how to properly steal an artists technique and add it to your own, much like in martial arts where you learn others techniques and your own style is stronger for it, I also watched your students reviews and I suddenly desire to be apart of your circle. I just bought your course today, but I wont start right away cuz of family vacations and some obligations. But once I do start, Im gonna commit and I'll even make a video with some set drawings of where I am now and will hold onto them for the after. I am excited and I wanna say, I am ready for this journey. WIsh me luck.

It's not enough to know what simplification is - it took me time and effort to understand it deeply, to grasp what a personal drawing style is and how to determine what mine is. I just realized that whenever I am "copying" a picture, I'm actually redrawing it with my personal style - and this is a huge discovery to me, as I was always afraid of this form of "copying" until now, thinking it was cheating or unethical, and didn't know what it actually was.

Super interesting concept, it really does help. With that being said, Training your eyes to recognize and draw simple shapes takes time. So, when you're doing gesture drawings/SIMPlification, don't get discouraged. You will be pleasantly surprised if spend 30 min a week and compare. I love your videos, especially the ones where you teach how to practice a skill in just 7 days-they make me super productive. Best wishes!
@nsuarez2 ай бұрын
I learned this skill from painting. When I paint, I always see shapes because they are easier to paint with a big, wide brush. When you draw you tend to see lines but if you push yourself you'll see the shapes and makes drawing easier. The way that I remembered it was "Structure" first, details last.

I've always struggled with the practice of using references, it came across as cheating and just copying someone else's art. It wasn't until I watched one of your videos where you said everything is a reference to something else, that nothing is truly 100% original. I started looking at art differently where everything has its original flare and that's what makes it unique. Simplifying a reference is the first step to identifying and developing that flare. It's a very important step to every artist out there.

im new to art and the approach i wanna give my drawings is something similar to playing the game factorio which is really addictive adn most of the time you have to construct thing from scratch but you can use blueprints as an idea of application towards things that may seem hard to apply by raw dogging it, but the issue i have is how to practice these things like, everything, i know a lot about anatomy and perspective and someother things but the thing i want to learn the most is about the procedure itself cause regardless of skill or artstyle everyone follows a procedure but everyones procedure is different from each others and i haavent found a solid one yet to do

Pro tip for my fellow near-sighted artists: Take off your glasses and look at your reference. Draw whatever you _can_ see that defines it as what it is to your blurry vision. Use an old prescription set of glasses to hit those medium details. Put on your current prescription to draw them final details.

This is a really good lesson. One of the best things about doing art digitally is that you can use this heavily when you start any piece, no matter how intricate or realistic, because you can simply cover your "simple" tracks by dropping the sketch layer's opacity later on, or deleting it entirely. It's true that this method changes how you see the world. I keep a Pinterest folder with everyday, mundane observations which I use as a method to encourage daily sketching - part of this process (and to churn out results more efficiently) involves simplifying how I look at any reference so that sketching is easier. Another way to help build this skill btw is to try to draw pictures as though they were intended for a children's book. These illustrations are deliberately simplified but are deceptively difficult to do effectively. Btw kids naturally do this skill very well. Consider their drawings of cars, buildings, ships etc - they are far more observant than we often credit them.

Interesting. This was something I did specifically with arms and fists as a kid. But for some reason I never applied it to anything else. I haven't really been drawing/painting all my life. It was something I did as a kid and up to like 14-15 then I stopped for like 14 years until I re-discovered it again. I still have that simplification process down on the fist from way back, as you said the process makes it easy to remember. I'll just try to start applying it to other things as well.

I mostly agree, because you show great heuristics here, but the title is where I have to differ. The most God-tier art skill is to seek relationship and understanding with God himself. He's the best mentor. Simplifying and abstracting elements of art is a complex skill, requiring learned heuristics like all things in life, but looking to nature helps us distinguish good mentors and find the unifying patterns in design elements. A hand or foot is a miniature human body in abstract form, for example. The Golden Ratio is in the stars, in geography, and in organisms. But due to modern parlance and cultures, the above words seem counter-intuitive. So, I understand if that's outside your language framework, and I don't pretend this understanding makes me "wise." I'm learning from this video just like anyone else. The important distinction is that trying to be "a God of art" is modern philosophy, which led me into a lot of unhelpful art/mental habits, while also making me less receptive to good advice. Seeking instead to be "MORE LIKE the God of art/all things" has made art easier and more fun than anything else, and opened my eyes/ears to more teachers. It's still a complex problem (who IS this God? WHAT is this God? What parts of culture are helpful to integrate, vs what unhelpful parts of culture have I internalized?), but a good philosophy is always growing. And good simplification is nothing more than a set of practical heuristics. Thanks for another great video, Marc Brunet.

Idk if it’s my laziness or my smooth 🧠, but I’ve always done this (kinda, sort of); to start any drawing, or maybe it’s cause my medium was traditional and not digital. Yeah right? I realised earlier this week (or more like finally convinced myself) Recently I started watching a lot of speed paint videos of some art gods (which I shouldn’t be comparing with yet…) and I noticed that in the early phases there a lot of mistakes and things that are just staying there as simple spots for a very long time. But then I thought that honestly why would you want everything figured out from the beginning? By concentrating on such things is like paying more attention to the details than the whole drawing. The more you just make a sketch, paint over it and then paint over the mess you have just created and repeating this again and again you finally find yourself with an almost fully finished good drawing very fast. Not to mention that as I have been observing, pros use photo bashing and other “cheats” a lot if necessary but in the end you actually get better results faster (and by better I mean clear what that thing is) Thank you for confirming my theories right! 😅
