I always love seeing filmmakers using ingenuity. Truly shows that creativity is all around in a production.
@captainLoknar

Indeed. Something most of hollywood is totally oblivious about. VFX for the sake of pushing a story: your production will find a way to make it work and achieve what it means to do no matter what. When your production team is focused on VFX for showing pleasing or challenging shots, and plugging all their friend's co-production companies to help spread the money - then the movie story sucks and is convoluted.

Can’t say I was a fan of it either. The themes were very heavy handed and randomness for the sake of randomness (maybe it lands better in the US than to Europeans) but it’s great that something original found a big audience and Michelle Yeoh is getting recognition she deserved. @Paul Anderson I guess that makes sense, to me it connected a lot being a first-generation American. With parents who came from the farms of Ecuador and the Dominican Republic. So it resonated so much about the pressure joy felt, always about you having so many opportunities and blah blah blah.

I think what people loved about this movie was that it really had heart. You don't get that in a Marvel comic-book movie or pretty much any modern day movie.

That is perhaps one of many reasons why the movie looked so fresh, so different, so out of the box. That and the story of course. It proved that good writing and ingenuity will not scare the wide audience, that the regular people can get something different and that the industry doesn't have to cater to the masses. Or moreso, their image of the masses. This movie shows that the masses can digest an experimental movie just fine.

Amazing use of the software for the rock shot. And it shows that the VFX artists are focused on getting the results rather than being held back by industry snobbery. I can image old school VFX big timers turn their nose up at a software based tool, I can hear the comments now "What's next, an instagram filter on the next star wars film!?". Personally I think it is amazing that we live in a time where software solutions can create end results to a level good enough to make it into a big budget film. Absolute hats off to the VFX artists. What they are doing is pushing the boundaries of their craft. Just as the Impressionists had to endure the snobbery of their forerunners. When art evolves the old guard never likes change. Bravo for change I say!!

I also wonder if there was a more cohesive vision before the movie even began filming. Big block busters, nowadays, seem to rescript, reshoot, and (sometimes) recast even just a few weeks before release on the regular. Perhaps having a plan from the beginning and sticking close to it prevented a need of having to hire VFX team after VFX team. I don't know if that's actually the case, though.

Proof that if certain people did their job, there are solutions to everything (everywhere all at once,lol). Films could make so much more money if things are thought out thoroughly ahead of time. There’s a lot of people that have a certain position/job to do and someone over them. Sounds like there’s to many people like our government. Lol.
