Great vid again, but I think you can do without the fake clickbaity thumbnails that have nothing to do with the actual video, they're kind of irritating, especially when the actual effects are so impressive. This video for example, a shot of the city before and after VFX would've been just as impressive as a thumbnail IMO

Yes you can apply a 2D layer in a 3D space IF you are tracking the camera movement precisely :). You don't need to rebuild an entire set in a 3D software to do it.
@simarock Жыл бұрын
but bending it and matching movement, when obscured by things is very amateur-ish. also, compositing light, and more importantly, shadows, is waay more comfy, if you already have a good 3d scans. yes, you can it's easier and more precise with lidar, so if you have a lidar scanner, use it as an advantage

True, but the whole 3d model would be useful for having a bit more accurate reflections. I'd use it just to have a better idea of the scale of things, in relation to the camera, because tracking a shot often gets the scale of the scene wrong.

most people dont realise that VFX or (CGI) isnt just explosions and monsters. it can be litterally anything. take mad max fury road for example. pretty much everything is practically shot, the stunts, the characters the explosions and all the cars and yet there are tons of unseen vfx in terms of compositing to littreally alter the look and feel of the world. this is probably the most used for of VFX in movies in my opinion.

Lots of street exteriors and the riots were filmed in downtown Newark, which, to be fair, is pretty rough looking, and does look like old Midtown or Times Sq with some old marquees and vintage awnings still intact. Granted, a lot of VFX required, but 100x less than if they filmed those scenes in NY, which is unrecognizable from its 70s self in those neighborhoods.

It's why I say, I don't add points to movies anymore on the visual effects, it's all down to story, acting, editing, plot, and pacing; I can watch a movie with imperfect visual effects if all those things line up, but if those things aren't there, I don't care how good the effects are, it's a bad film; VFX are like maintenance, they're only noticed if they go horribly wrong, if you never notice them, there's nothing wrong on their end.

@matale66 Жыл бұрын
Hey! VFX Artist here. Not because it's a 2d layer it means it has to look plain. Our job is precisely to manipulate those 2D assets to integrate them so they feel as if they were actually in the space and they react to the geometries and lights in there. But it is all an illusion, it really is a 2D layer faking 3D
@MirceaGoia Жыл бұрын
@@matale66 "it really is a 2D layer faking 3D" - basically using a bump-mapped 2D layer :).
@matale66 Жыл бұрын
@@MirceaGoia I mean you could. But it could be too much for a simple blood splatter. It depends on the shot really, so I'm not saying that's not how they did it. However you could just comp it with some grades and masks from the luminance of the plate to mimic the result it would give you to have actual bumps and setting up a 3d light in a 3d scene. It can actually be way simpler.
