The visual of walt lying in the basement curled up, cobwebs and the slats of the vent looking like bars, the small pile of cash the only thing keeping him company, its like hes already in his grave, a personal hell all alone. One of my favorite shots in TV.

No show does tension/panic scenes better than BB. The sound design at the end... that screeching noise... the whole scene is pure, concentrated unnerving anxiety. The dynamic is so remarkable of all the characters clashing at once and Skyler- going from playing peacekeeper for Walt to Marie on the phone. She's like a punching bag getting hit with all of it at once. Walt's laugh makes total sense with the situation he's in. High school chemistry teacher gets cancer, cooks meth then his wife uses the money he made from it and gives it to the man she had an affair with? Many times throughout the show the characters are boxed in in shots by either a door frame or window frame etc. divided by beams or trapped in picture frames. The symbolism in that final shot of Walt laying in the dirt underground- boxed in by the door to the crawl space that he built himself, as if it's saying he’s dug his own grave and he's a dead man walking.

@Derkosson9 ай бұрын
One of the reasons Walt is laughing may be because he sees the dark humour in the situation. He spent most of the series with too much money to be able to do anything with it. Now that he actually can, and in fact needs to, he doesn't have it anymore.

Despite how tight this show's writing seems, it turns out there ARE just a few references & character mentions on this show that are never really followed up on, ...until they later turn out to be key plot points & pivotal characters on Better Call Saul. Oh, and one really cool editing moment in this reaction at 26:34: The moment in the dessert when Gus rips the hood off of Walt's head, to show Walt being momentarily blinded by the bright sunshine the show has the screen go to pure white, but you don't actually show that moment of footage in your reaction, instead we just see your faces suddenly lit up by your monitor turning into a solid bright white light just offscreen. Really cool effect, even if it may have been completely accidental.

1:30 I also think Jesse is in some ways the son Walter didn't have. Though Walt obviously cares about Walt Jr. you can also sense his disappointment, both when he teaches him to drive and when he gives him a drink (and uses him to try and assert his masculinity so embarrassingly). It's not just about what Jesse let's him be. He did genuinely save Jesse from the drug den after Jane's death. With Tuco and Gus similarly, he had plenty of chances to cut Jesse loose, but he always chose to save and protect him, even against his own interests.

For the young ones out there, the night this aired was one of the true beginnings of "Peak TV". A ending sequence like this was one of the big reasons why A-listers and serious actors started really turning to TV to explore very complex characters and choices throughout the 2010s. Also it was insane to think that Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Veep, The Walking Dead, Boardwalk Empire, Girls, and Game of Thrones were all airing on Sunday nights by 2013.

There’s lots of great villainous laughs out there, but for me, only a few have been as unsettling as Walter completely breaking down in this episode. That’s not even the scariest part, it wasn’t even a laugh of sadism or triumph. It was a genuine breakdown of a man, evil or not, about to potentially lose his family. There’s also another thing, but I won’t say what just yet. There’s lots of great moments in this episode, but honestly, something I only just remembered recently was the simultaneous conversations between Walter and Tyrus, and Jesse and Walt! Even in this episode, Walt did say to Tyrus that if Jesse was gone, like killed, Walt was through with Gus. Just as Walt said in the Season 4 premiere: “You kill me, you have nothing. You kill Jesse, you DON’T have me.” While simultaneously, Jesse says something similar that Walt did to Gus: “If you hurt Mr. White, you and I are going to have a problem.” Even after all that Walt put him through, Jesse still has this loyalty to Walt, because Walt, despite how Walt often treats him, has looked out for him more than even his own parents did. Walt did save Jesse from the two cocksuckers who enslaved, weaponized, and even murdered a child, and Walt did tell Gus in front of Jesse that if Gus killed Jesse, Walt’s done with Gus. Whilst simultaneously, despite Walt’s inexcusably extreme outburst in the bug episode, Walt didn’t actually want that to happen to Jesse. It’s what his whole breakdown in the Salud episode was about. He even said to Tyrus in this episode that if Pinkman (Jesse) wasn’t coming back, neither would Walt. I like how both scenes in the episode happen fairly close to each other, showing that despite their toxic relationship, their mentalities and worries for each other are intertwined, almost as if they are in synch. It’s a detail that I honestly hadn’t noticed myself until recently.

One thing that's not always considered in regards to Walt and Jesse's father-son relationship is the fact that Walter's relation with his biological son, Walter Jr, was never great or what he had always envisioned. In the first season, it's obvious that Hank is more of a father figure to Walt Jr and in the flashback with pregnant Skyler, we hear that Walter originally wanted three kids. We can only assume that due to Walt Jr being born with cerebral palsy, their life became more complicated than what Walter had in mind, which probably led to him settling for a stable high school teaching job instead of being more ambitious. Even though Walter clearly loves Walter Jr, with Jesse it's like he's raising the son he never had.

@@suzannesmith4882 the only things that annoy me are some of his reactions/responses to Kailyn. sometimes he shuts down her goofy jokes/theories a little bit. but i have no idea what their relationship is like, so it's not my place to judge. imo any reaction-related traits of his are just how he's engaging with the show for the first time! i'm sure that you or i thought some silly things the first time watching, or missed some bits. you and i know the show well now, and we forget that we had no idea what was going to happen our first time. the "is ted dead???" thing actually made me laugh lol. thinking ted died makes huell's line "it was an act of god!" 100x funnier. in my experience you just have to be patient with people new to something you're familiar with, because you would've appreciated that too when you were new to it, and missing stuff just means they'll get the chance to find out a cool thing in the future! ALSO any other traits he has are valid as long as they're not hurting anyone BUT if they are annoying you that's also valid, just means you gotta decide if it's worth it for you to keep watching. sometimes ppl just don't mesh well

small thing that might have been missed. walt said Gus wont kill him because Jesse wont let him. Gus responded "for now". Walts time was up at some point, as soon as Jesse didnt care anymore Gus was gonna kill him and tie up a loose end. Walt 100% went after gus to protect hank but he was still in danger as well.
@jakandratchet99308 ай бұрын
That’s only Gus’s word though. Even after this episode, Jesse still vouched for Walt, even telling Gus over the phone that if something final happens to Walt, Jesse and Gus would have a serious problem. Once Gus said that there’d be an appropriate measure/response, he hung up as Jesse was asking what Gus meant by that. That only made Jesse even more concerned/suspicious. It more or less lead Jesse to Saul, who told Jesse about Gus’s threat towards Walt’s family, which left Jesse horrified. If anything, it was only a matter of time before Jesse stood against Gus again to help Walt.
