- What genre is this? - Ren Yes, it was recorded live boom mike for the song and the lavaliere for the spoken word, and the guitar is live as well. And it's a one shot (that took 4 attempts to get) done on multiple cameras simultaneously to get the different angles other than the last bit was a separate cut. If you didn't know; Ren has Lyme's Disease and spent years being misdiagnosed, so it is incurable and has done a huge amount of damage to his body, organs and brain. He also deals with depression and ADHD. Talking about what's going on with you will show you how many people can and will relate and empathize. Ren's audience is a very open minded and sympathetic group, so don't be surprised to find how supportive we are. And we're always here for more Ren.

@@tatradak9781 nah its outside of genre limitations or conventions; Ren embraces bending and combining genres in every way possible. His most recent album is limited to a Hip Hop theme, but it's way beyond Hip Hop, enough to inspire other hip hop artists to be more experimental in their approach.

Having watched about 50 reactions to this video now, and reading many of the comments, I can tell you that no, this is not pre-recorded and then lip-synced. From what I understand, he live-recorded this about 4 times, and this was the best take. It's not spliced, it's not pre-recorded. If you look, you can see that he's wearing a mic clipped to the neck of the hospital gown. They had four cameras running. I don't know if the lamps were pre-programmed or someone was flipping the switches, but it's really effective.

Ren has Lyme Disease and was misdiagnosed with a variety of mental health issues until they figured out what was really wrong. His style is referred to as Bardcore. He has some super intense mental health songs, some awesome rap/hip hop songs, and some cool songs with his band The Big Push. DJ- I don't have an eating disorder, but I struggle with depression anxiety and self-harm. For what it's worth, the fact that you realize that things are getting bad again is huge! You're a student, not a victim and that's awesome!

Here is some additional information on Ren's story that I gathered from old newspaper interviews, articles, and Ren's public livestreams and posts. A handful of people frequently post an earlier version of my comment to various reactions that they copied and pasted verbatim, so if this is a repeat just ignore this comment. I keep editing the information, as needed, and have removed details about Ren that some found to be too personal, such as his full name and D.O.B. All the information here was gathered exclusively from sources Ren personally approved for public release. Ren is a Welsh musician/independent artist/producer, self-taught multi-instrumentalist. He pursued a career in music from an early age. In 2009, while studying music performance at Bath Spa University, Ren began to experience health issues and was struggling to attend his lectures, which eventually caused him to discontinue his studies and return home. In addition, Ren was signed by Sony Records in 2010 and was working on an album when his health deteriorated to the point that he was unable to go on; consequently, his contract with Sony was dissolved. Ren would later relocate to Brighton. Ren's illness often kept him in bed for up to 23 hours daily. Ren was initially misdiagnosed with depression, bipolar disorder, and chronic fatigue syndrome, which led him to experience psychosis and develop PTSD. It would take seven years before a doctor in Belgium finally correctly diagnosed Ren with autoimmunity, Lyme disease, and resulting damage to the brain, organs, joints, and PTSD. Ren eventually underwent stem cell therapy in the United States, which improved his health, but it has not been a cure. Ren is in Calgary, Canada for at least six months (Summer of 2023), undergoing treatments such as IV therapy and other interventions five days a week, as well as surgeries (wisdom tooth removal and cavitation surgery). His Canadian doctor discovered that Ren also developed a condition called Mast Cell Activation Disorder (MCAD), which has affected the myelin sheath in his brain, his thyroid, and adrenals as well as his bones/joints. Hence, Ren is receiving additional treatments for this previously undiagnosed condition. He recently took a break from treatments and returned to the UK to visit family and friends, and to produce some very ambitious musical projects to be released soon. Let's keep supporting Ren as he undergoes his treatments. Check out and subscribe to his channel; if you are a content creator, ask your audience to subscribe to Ren. Ren's YT channel just surpassed 1 million subscribers. and his videos have garnered millions and millions of views. Listen to some of his earlier work, like and comment on his performances, and let's lift Ren's spirits. If you are a believer, pray for him. Ren is an artist with something to say to the world, and his work is important in these troubling times. Someone has finally created a Wikipedia page for Ren, so there is additional information available.

@@tatradak9781his illness is typical for late stage Lyme disease, a bacterial illness spread by ticks and generally carried by animal vectors like deer and rodents. If treated early the extremes of illness are much less severe, however Ren had been sick for many years before he was diagnosed and by then the bacteria had managed to get into his central nervous system and brain. It's a horrible illness, and if doctors tested more frequently for chronically ill people they wouldn't get as sick as Ren got. If treated before crossing the blood-brain barrier, Lyme disease is fairly treatable with antibiotics.

REN missed his calling as a priest or therapist perhaps... In less then 10 minutes he compels utter strangers to confess their darkest struggles, their sins, their weakness and their pain. In all seriousness I think REN has become a living representation for Hope to many people. What people feel for his music is far more than respect. It is hope pure and simple.

Hi DJ, I usually come here for your Voiceplay reactions but I'm glad to see you got to Ren's music too. Ren is a wonderful artist and a great human being. He is an artist who can sing (much more than you see in Hi Ren), play different instruments, rap, act... He's been severly sick because of undiagnosed Lyme disease and he's now a bit better but it took a big toll in his physical and mental health . If you go down this rabbit hole you'll see he can sing and play almost every genre (it's not an exaggeration) and he has both very sad songs and very funny ones. Sooner or later please check Murderer. It's a funny one AND your eyes will be blessed 😉 Given your present condition I would avoid Dominoes if I were you because it's a deep, sad song about a girl with an eating disorder... A big hug!

Ren's ability to tell stories is phenomenal. Some of his tales are fiction, sparked from events around him, and some are pure truth of the life he's lived. Obviously, HI Ren is purely his own mental struggle. I'm sure others have already mentioned this, but please please react to the full trilogy of 'The Tale of Jenny and Screech' plus 'Violet's Tale'. They have to be done together, but they will show you both his fictional story-telling and his incredible guitar skills, and his ability to shock us and tackle hard topics. There is just so much to Ren. He's a wonderful young man, who has captured so many of us, all ages, backgrounds and genres (I'm a middle age woman, metalhead). Welcome to the Ren-aissance, you are now an official Renegade :) xxx

You are in for a REN ride! I’m subscribed to witness it. To fully blow your mind I recommend the Hunger next then The Big Push I Shot the Sheriff (version where he’s wearing suspenders). Then go at whatever order you want but The Tale of Jenny & Screech and Violets Tale must be watched all together (full version). REN was misdiagnosed with Lyme disease for nearly a decade and told it was only mental issues. He’s currently in Canada for treatment of the Lyme disease and started blowing up earlier this year but has been making tons of epic material for years. He was on a label that dropped him bc of his illness so he’s independent now and makes his own beats and produces his work and is the king of one-takes. Enjoy the ride.

I like how "HOPE" says that he has spent half his life ill. Ren has been I'll for about half of his life and it would make sense that the first aspect of our psyche to suffer due to our illness would be our hope. Also when hope starts to speak you can tell he is just emerging from a long slumber. He speaks very slowly and deliberately with a deep tone. Like someone would if they were just waking up and not fully awake yet. As the verse progresses hope starts to find his voice and find his confidence and then we learn why it has reemerged after all this time. It was his time, to fullfill his duty, when the darkness takes over it sets out a call for hope to emerge and retake the reigns. As he says "my will is eternal......face to face with a beast I will rise in the east and I'll settle on the ocean floor" hope knows it is the only one who can face down the beast, he has stood in the flames without flinching or shaking. He counters the demons by looking into the camera for the first time in the song. Making direct eye contact with the audience so that we are locked in to what he is about to announce. "I go by many names also" this demonic side if you is not the only one with many forms. And then to top it all off because the demon has spent the entire song telling Ren that his musical abilities are just not good enough. Mocking his lyrics, calling him a fraud and laughing at his desire to be the next jimmy Hendrix, so what does hope do to slap the demon in his face? He gives ren the confidence to begin singing at the top of his lungs. "Watch the man i become, when I sing at the top of my lungs, I will not only have the confidence needed to perform but I will inspire others to have hope and be strong. And he ends it by telling the demon "I'm immortal just like you. We are just opposite sides of the same coin"

@@whimsysmith2835 oh thanks alot I appreciate it. It actually wasn't untill I started to really think about rens words at the end of the song that I started to get a better sense of it. He spends the first part of the song fighting the darkness. He's doing his best but he ultimately lacks any real hope. So he tries the best he can to defend himself "i don't think we should talk" "I'm fine by myself I'm.a genius" "fuck you" "who are you to doubt my music" " when I write I belong" "I'll lock you up inside" the darkness just shrugs off all these attacks and laughs at his clumsy footsteps and hopeless demeaner. When the darkness takes over remember what Ren says, the brighter the light the darker the shadow. Well the darker the shadow the brighter the light. Darkness taking over causes hope to shine brighter. That's when Ren realizes it isn't a battle for him to win. It's supposed to be a dance. So the end of the song shows him strumming his heart out, dancing, kicking his feet high into the air and jamming out. Ultimately the moral is the more you fight your demons the more you will end up killing yourself. Because your demons are you and you are your demons. So instead of waging psychological warfare on yourself just have hope, and dance, sing at the top of your lungs, relax and dance. Ultimately things will soften and you will find peace.

@@DomAtaGlance - Again, thank you for sharing your thoughts. I deeply enjoy your verbal acuity, and your perception. In my own case I hear the line regarding the brighter light creating the darker shadow as a reminder or almost a warning. Just as in your darkest moments it is easy to forget that hope even exists, in the brightest moments of my life I have found it too easy to forget that the darkness is still always there. Many of the most hurtful things I have done in my life was be so caught up in my own happiness that I forgot and even neglected people important to me who needed me. It was a wake up call to me, that sometimes the dark voice in my head is right, that I had allowed myself to become egotistical, patronizing, and judgmental. The dance concept resonated with me, because one of the things that keep me strong is remembering that every dark moment in my life were absolutely necessary events that had to occur for the following great moment of my life. The cynical part of me notes the fact that I suffered before I found happiness does not mean, ipso facto, that one caused or even affected the other. But it is also true that you learn lessons from pain, and like a pendulum the more extreme pain that you feel the equal and opposite feeling of joy must be likewise possible for us to experience. I hold that belief very strongly right now. Right now things are very dark and it is incredibly hard to believe my future holds happiness because my future does not have any of my loved ones in it. It is very hard to literally be facing losing every single person you love, just rotten Job’s luck. REN’s music gives me hope even looking down the dark future I have to walk through. His own Phoenix persona is an inspiration to many including me.

I like your take on this, but I don't agree with you that Hope was sleepy. Hope was controlled, measured, deliberate, and grounded. Hope was always there to some degree in Ren but it wasn't strong in the beginning because it didn't need to be. He only invokes Hope fully when the pendulum swings back into the light because his shadow had tried to invoke the authority of eternal sin while in the darkness. Hope hadn't been away or asleep, it was Ren's shadow which was returning after weeks of silence in the first set of bars and that is when Hope starts getting challenged again in the dance and gets progressively stronger. Both the Light and the entropy are eternal. No Yin if no Yang. As below, so above, so Lucifer appearing required Hope to enter to keep Ren balanced in his pendulum dance. His music will be immortal

Face it, Ren deserves his own genre. Hence, the term "Bard-Core!" He IS our twenty-first century Bard. All his videos like this are fully live performances.

As you probably have already learned enough about Ren from the other Renegades, I would like to tell you something for yourself: You said "if you look at me now" like you are overweight or something - but you also said "love yourself more" and I would like to adress your own advice to yourself. Love yourself a little bit more. You look gorgeous and seem to have a very kind and gentle soul, so don't be so rough to yourself! I really enjoyed your reaction and am looking forward to the next Ren reactions! subbed.

By now I've watched at least 100 reactions to this song. (I'm obsessed with Ren reactions). This is one of my favorite reactions to it. Nice Job!!! I subscribed tonight. You are going to LOVE the Ren rabbit hole. This man is unique and oh so talented. You need to do some of his stuff with his former band "The Big Push", and you have to see his duets with Chinchilla and Sam Tompkins and of course Ren's rap stuff. "The Hunger" and "Losin' It" are my favorite songs in the world right now.

When I watched this it helped me realize as a person that no one can cut you down like yourself. You notice in the video he starts off so confident and strong until “bad Ren” started to break him down and get more of a response as the video goes on. Until the resolution to the video, Which is just next level.

Coming in late to your reaction. It has not begun yet, but may I say, if people are "triggered" by this; they need to watch it; not look away. If Ren has shown us anything with his songs, it is that we need to bring tough issues out into the open for us to all discuss and deal with. Hiding all our problems away because we are too afraid to face them head on, is a cop out that has clearly not worked for society and the individuals which make up our societies. Now will carry on and listen with interest.... Enjoyed your comments.

Ren has also performed this song "Hi Ren" live in front of an audience. too One can view that performance by searching KZbin for "Ren - Hi Ren (The Other Songs Live at KOKO) ". Ren had an interview with KZbinr Black Pegasus and he talked about the inspiration for his upcoming hip hop album Sick Boi (release date Oct 13 2013) and also how he wrote the song "Hi Ren" (at about 18mn into the interview).

Welcome to the Rennaissance @dj_410 and thank you ❤ for your empathetic and insightful Ren reaction! I liked 👍 it and subscribed 🔔. Ren has got an awesome back catalogue, and I am looking forward to you discovering it. So what do you want to see and hear next? A ballady thing w/guitar? 🎸🧑‍🎤💊 Ren X Chinchilla - Chalk Outlines (live). Rap? 🐟&🍟🚢🌊 Genesis. Fun stuff? 👯👯👯👯 Love Music. Raggae? 🎸🎸🎸🥁 The Big Push - I Shot The Sheriff/Road To Zion/Hip Hop (red suspenders). Hard beats? 💉💊 Sick Boi or 🦁🦍 Animal Flow. Goofy madness? 🚲🐺🦍 Losing It! (FISHER Rap). Masterly storytelling horrendously sad stories? 🎺🏥🔪 The Tale of Jenny and Screech (full 13 min version). Another great one-take storytelling short movie? 🚗🔫 Murderer or 💰🐚 Money Game! Trippy electronica? 🎹💊 Diazepam. More singing? 🧑‍🎤 Humble. Have great fun! Ren has a premiere of the long-awaited Song & Video "Money Game, Pt. 3" on Thursday 12 October 2023. On Friday 13 October 2023 his new album 🎶💿 Sick Boi comes out. The album may (and should!) be preordered at sickboialbum.com or through @renmakesmerch ... last we looked at the album preorder hit list, it actually topped it being trailed by the new albums of the Rolling Stones & Ed Sheeran. Only a year ago no one, least of all Ren, would have expected anything like that to happen.

And the songs written just before this that would tell you where his head had been are "Masochist", "Lost All Faith", "Sick Boi" (which was actually filmed in this same spot), and "Illest of our Time". Stages of reaction for 'Hi Ren': This looks creepy. Pig mask, ha. Guitar sounds nice. Nylon strings. Oh he’s singing. I did not expect that. Will the whole song be like this? Okay, he’s rapping now. Cool. He's good. Has anyone noticed he looks like Tommy Shelby? This guy is scary. Now he seems nice. Oh I see what he’s doing. This is interesting, it's like Eminem or Plan B. This is intense. Time has lost its meaning. The mean guy is a jerk. This is INTENSE! Make it stop, I need to cry a bit. I haven’t blinked or taken a breath in four minutes. OMG THERE GOES THE 4TH WALL!!! And he knew what I was thinking. YES! You tell him Ren. Okay, scary guy got way scarier. you didn't know it was the devil, you would have dressed properly. 'Loosen the noose on the rope' line hits a millisecond after; it hits hard. You, you, just can't, but he lifts you up and... HOLY SHITBALLS HE CAN SING!!! Damn, he can really sing. OOO-OO-OO-OO-OO-... (your head bobs, tears in your eyes, you get it now) I need some time to be still, wait there's more? He's talking to me and peering into my soul. I was not expecting to feel this much. (you sit in the dark and contemplate existence) "Good art makes you think about the art, great art makes you think about your life."

That was a fantastic reaction video to Hi Ren. Thank you for sharing with the world your issue with eating. This song speaks to so many people for very different reasons, mine being that i suffer with nerve damage which causes chronic pain in various parts of my body. The medication i take either leaves me feeling some pain but just able to function as a human or leaves me feeling like a zombie! One side of my brain is telling me you feel ok today get up and go and work in the garden or do something.... The other side is telling me if you do that you will be in extra pain for the next two weeks and will have to take more meds that will F.... you up even more... It is a constant battle!!! On Ren, about 75% of his videos are recorded live and are ONE TAKES. He may have performed it several times until he gets the performance he is happy with. Hi Ren was done in three takes and the 3rd take was the one they used. You need to follow up with more Ren songs as Rens fans the Renagades will all subsribe to reactors who give Ren love and exposure to more people. Ren is an independent artist, Social media is his only outlet for his music without the backing of a record company behind him. Thank you

Eating disorder is something I can relate to. Underweight for the last 30 yrs though I’ve been a chef for 24 of them. It’s a hard hard thing to try to relate to others about it. For Hi Ren reactions I’ve seen I do cry maybe 80% of the time. Hey guys, maybe seek therapy before you’re as old as I am. Much love.
