It had a lot of great character moments but the anime ruined it.

What we got is an extra-long arc that did do the opposite it should do to Luffy, Usopp and Robin while completely missing why the Davy Back Fight begun and how it should have ended (in the the straw hats don't take any of the highly sought shipwrights that weren't even clearly offered in the anime).

Something I noticed while watching one piece are that the (pre-timeskip) arcs that are considered ‘bad’ (Skypeia, Long Ring Long Land, Thriller Bark) are actually good, just hurt most by the pacing. LRLL and Thriller Bark are very humor based arcs, while Skypeia is an initially inconsequential seeming arc with alot of build up and tension. The new series should solve the pacing issue allowing these arcs to be better enjoyed.

Oda doesn't do anything without reason. Long Ring Long Land may seem like a filler arc, but it's setting up things without you realising. This is the Grand Line, where a minor antagonist nearly beat Luffy, and after facing someone entirely out of his league shortly afterwards (which you either didn't mention or didn't get to?) Luffy is very aware of his weaknesses and failings.

100% agree! I didn't regard Foxy and his story importance at first, but after some age and experience, it turns out his presence had far more narrative weigh than I was seeing. After Luffy smacked God around, Foxy was the first of a string of dominoes that kicked the main characters in upgrading their arsenal, and leading to, for me, the best arc of One Piece.

Obviously part of why it is seen as filler particularly by anime onlys is because the anime version is more than 50% filler and the single most impactful and plot critical moment. Aokiji shows up, creates an ice bridge to allow the old man to rejoin his people and completely wrecks the Straw Hats. Has been moved to the beginning of Water 7 instead of the end of this arc to accommodate two additional filler arcs. The changes to accommodate non-canon events are woven into the story so they can't be skipped or ignored and drag down all the material around it so that even the canon material feels like filler. The thing is One Piece is a great setting for filler arcs, it is so easy to add another island in between their canon adventures. G-8 is pretty much the best example of this ever because it's expertly written to not interfere with the main story while at the same time reinforcing themes that are really important in Water 7. However, they essentially stop doing filler arcs and episodes moving forward and start doing a great deal more mid-arc filler and padding which is frankly, just the worst. "Hey you remember that emotional flashback? What if we repeated it 40 times in this arc."(40 times is not an exaggeration by the way.) In very recent years they have gotten better with their mid episode filler, as Oda is noticeably more in a hurry and has more events happen off-panel than ever before and the anime has started focusing on padding by expanding on off-panel stuff. So that some parts are legitimately better in the anime but the padding and slow pace still drags the whole thing down and I'm extremely grateful for One Pace and the remake coming soon.

one piece is known for it's freedom and fun spirit. arcs like this are nice breaks after bigger arcs. it's a show meant for young teens. my kids and I have been binging it. the little mini arcs that are not to serious are great at giving the audience a break emotionally and get us laughing. if everything was high stakes 24/7 it'd get old quick.

This arc is my favorite it arc. It must be read not watched. It's the last arc where we see the straw hats being involved in a fun low stakes adventure (and also the only time we see the crew fighting an other crew as pirates on equal footing).This story is so incredibly funny, I used to carry with me the foxy arc with me every time I travelled because I knew if I would feel down, that would be my feel good moments despite having read this arc more than any other arcs. The anime did it dirty, One Piece must be read before all.

No, it doesn't make "fans" quits. It makes "people who don't understand One Piece" quit. Long Ring Long land is legit one of the best arcs of pre time skip one piece. It's the arc in which Luffy realizes how easy loosing crewmates is (to foxy) it's the arc in which Zoro and Sanji start to respect and trust one another. It's the arc in which the admirals are introduced. And don't get gazlighted by people telling you Foxy is weak. Foxy put on a good fight against Luffy. Yes he cheated, so what ? Luffy didn't fight any differently that how he usually does, and so did Foxy. In a fight were they both gave their all, Luffy almost lost. Like holy shit. It's a good arc, it's fun and it carries major things for the future of the series

The theme is here about crewmates losing and playing a game also they did a good job of putting in extra fillers so we saw Robin being a crew member and they did a good job adding another filler so the Water 7 could be more devastating to watch it.

@@gaminginvirinch3339 I know of at least two anime onlys that had to convinced to watch further because they hated Luffy in this arc. They couldn't simply believe how he treats the lives of his crew members here and had to be convinced with the manga version that a "real" Luffy exists. The theme of this arc also has absolutely nothing to do with games but much with the concept of comrades and "heart over reason". Luffy agrees to the game only because the horse was shot (not in the anime here he is simply an idiot). Luffy takes Chopper back immediately against Nami's advice to take Foxy to win the entire thing (in the anime he let's his friend in the hands of the enemy to choose a horse against all rules). Anime Luffy agrees to a second match despite already having experienced of losing a friend (manga Luffy would likely have killed him for this). The straw hats are especially presented with the much needed shipwrights in the manga but decline them. The anime made this a mass event where nearly all of Foxy's crew should now be considered at least honorary straw hats for a short time because they were in the crew for a very short time. Luffy fought against Aokiji well knowing that he had absolutely no chance. All of this events lead to Robin loving this crew for their "heart over reason" approach and doing it herself in Water 7 with the deal with CP9. I'm rather sure that most anime viewers notice that something isn't right with this arc but they don't know why. One simple reason is that next to nothing is left intact from the manga - besides Zoro/Sanji which many people like. Even the first race is changed to make it a mass event instead of a more focussed competition with Usopp, Nami and Robin where Usopp can show his value before Water 7 (the anime robbed him of this as well). And I'm a clear advocate for more filler but please not within a canon arc. Nobody would have had any issue if filler arcs (maybe even with Foxy) were placed before the events of Long Ring Long Island and after the fight with Aokiji. I also think that the mistreatment of this canon arc was one of the reasons why filler became so rare after it.

I got all that from the arcs ahead of it, and some of that even before it. It's just not a great arc to watch the anime. I probably wouldn't hate it if my initial experience was the manga. The reason people recommend skipping it is because, besides Aokiji's surprise appearance (I would never recommend skipping that in particular), the Davy Back fights are entirely contrived. Sanji and Zoro always argue, but always have the interest of the crew in mind first. Davy Back may have been the introduction to these things but every arc afterward does those concepts much more effectively. This is because japanese storytelling relies a lot of retelling things. And when the overall story retells the same themes and demonstrates them repeatedly, I would say that this introduction to those concepts was just plain sloppy, **in the anime**. The manga is less of a headache even if I wasn't enthused to re-read it.

I distinctively remember liking the Foxy pirates, because, when I watched as a kid It was kind of threatening that these masked goobers basically took hostage members of the crew with dumb games, I kept imagining they would appear again later and I liked them. Also, the first time, I missed the reason why they HAD to play the games, It was like an excuse. I actually thought this would heave CONSECUENCES because IMPORTANT I didn't know how long the show would go for (I remember thinking at one point, the build up for Ennies Lobby was the ending) It's something to keep in mind, like, THAT was a thing.

I literally just finished this arc last night before bed for the first time and I have some thoughts. Obviously not my favorite arc, but it was still fun. I was just as frustrated as the rest of the crew when Luffy agreed to a second Davy Back, but that honestly made the arc more fun. There were a lot of good moments, none necessarily bad. Zoro's speech to Chopper, the Zoro and Sanji team up, Robin got more opportunities to show how creative she can be with her devil fruit powers, and of course, Afro Luffy. What I didn't expect from this arc and that I ended up really liking was just how close Foxy was to beating Luffy. I mean, I knew Foxy would lose but seeing how close he got to actually winning really reminded me that this is the Grand Line and anything can happen, even a minor antagonist almost beating the guy who just literally beat up God.

One of my favorite things about G8 is Jonathan's connection to Akainu. It adds credibility to Jonathan as a threat while Humanising Akainu in ways we don't get too much of. Finally, someone who doesn't rag on the the other filler arcs of One Piece, yes everyone loves G8 but the others are fine. The good thing is that they never last too long so it breaks up the more hype action with goofy fun times. Though if the Longring Longland arc has a quality meme, it's gotta be the sheer awesomeness that is Afro Luffy! That afro increases his strength you know? P.S. you need to update your arc roadmap, cuz we be knee-deep in the one after Wano. Thems the breaks.

Honestly I think both were fine. Long ring long land wasn’t great by any means and could even be considered bad (not me though, I personally consider it enjoyable) but it gets way too much hate. People make it out to be terrible but it’s really not as bad as it’s made out to be. Also unpopular opinion but g8 was my least favourite filler arc 😅 sorry for the long paragraph

Long Ring Long Land is great, and will end up being seen as a lot more important in terms of foreshadowing once people realize one of the major events in the finale will involve Luffy and Shanks having a Davy Back Fight.

I legit think that the fights are the least important aspect of One Piece and I'm convinced Oda doesn't care about them nearly as much as the average One Piece fan does and as much as they think Oda does. The man writes about character and themes first and foremost and thank fuck for that. After recently getting through this Arc I also found it pretty entertaining. I just viewed it as The Straw Hats getting ambushed by Waluigi and tricked into playing Mario Party with him. Also getting to see what a Gear Six Luffy would look like by the end was cool too.

I recently reread pre-timeskip OP after only watching the anime and when I first watched long ring I hated it, especially after how slow skypiea feels in the anime. However on my reread and loving skypiea (jumping from a 8.5 to a 10) I decided to actually read long ring instead of skipping it like I was planning to. And it wasn't as bad as I remember tbh. Probably because I wasn't binging and needing to know what happens next. I realized the main problem I had with the long ring was that it was more annoying than it was bad, the strawhats could've easily won all of the "fights" if they cheated like foxy but didn't when they are literal pirates so it shouldn't matter. Besides that it unironically had some of the best moments between characters like zoro and sanji working together and zoro's speech to chopper.

LLRL was bloated into oblivion compared to the manga. There was no second round of the game (we only had rafts, Zoro/Sanji human capture the flag, and Luffy/Foxy duel on the ship, no roller derby, no dodgeball, no red light / green light), and the admiral is the one who sends the old guy on his way before he starts kicking the crew's butts. And while the arc is silly and dorky, there are themes touched upon here that will come back bigger and badder later (in particular that cfrew members can be lost). On the other hand, G8 is perhaps the best filler in the history of anime.

I liked G8 because it was chill, we got to see unusual strawhat pairs while they do stuff that works well with their character and suits them outside of combat and adventure. And the marines there were a nice change of pace from the usual we see the foxy arc on the other hand I just found annoying and at times even frustrating, I knew it was pointless and wanted it to end fast luffy with the afro is real meme material tho

I think this arc is okay (neither excellent nor awful) and I could understand why someone would have it as their least favorite. What I really can't understand though is why someone would hate fishman island. enjoyment of the villains aside, the arc is really good when it comes to the themes and the excellent backstories it brings to the table.

I think Long Ring is fine, not bad, but is forgettable because it's right in between Sypeia and Water 7 which are two of the best arcs in the whole series.

When you realize that Foxy's slow slow power is essentially OVER POWERED and the only thing that's stopping him from slowing down ANYTHING for 30 seconds is his own fragile ego. Imagine it, he only does small things like cannonballs, people, or natural events like stopping waves. All to satisfy or help him. Imagine this... Someone is dying and he can give them more time by slowing them down to figure out a solution to save them. Yeah I don't underestimate "ANYTHING" in one piece. Do I find him annoying sure. But like you said in your previous analysis if you can get someone like that on your side then you've already won.

I like Long Ring Long Land well enough. It's a nice break and needed to make Water 7 hit harder. Though I admit I only reread LRLL, I haven't watched it in the anime since it first came out. It's one of the arcs that would really benefit from the Netflix anime reboot.
