This. So many people get it wrong, because he loves his cooking, and it's often played for gags, but he didn't eat Sanji's cooking yet when he asked him to join. He saw a man kind enough to feed to scumbag that everyone else would have thrown over the rails and be done with. Not Sanji. And given one arc WAAAAY later, (STOP READING IF NOT READ WHOLE CAKE) . . . . . . . Luffy needs to remind Sanji that he is who he is, and Luffy likes him because it's him. Luffy took flaming kick to the face, got captured, tried to rip his arms off to escape, escapes anyway and starves all just to prove to Sanji that he's not a burden. And if, then whatever burden Sanji might bring, Luffy will not only lift, but toss it on whoever put it on Sanji in the first place.

Personally, I think the idea of Nami not participating in the fight elevated it the arc slightly even further. The entire arc was built up on Nami holding everything together all alone with no help. Believing that any help she would get would only endanger those she cares about and that she would drag them down. Luffy defeating Arlong without her contribution proved that point further. It gave her the realization to would finally 100% put her trust in the people who care for her... her crewmates. Luffy defeating Arlong WITHOUT HER is what solidified that idea that she does not need to do everything all alone. Its honestly really touching.

You definitely misunderstood the point of Nami not helping in the arc. The whole point of Nami not helping the Straw Hats at the end was supposed to be a realization of her needing to rely on others. Like it's okay for her to be selfless, but she needs to also realize she can't do everything alone. You'll learn this more as the story goes on that the show is VERY MUCH about the crew doing the things THEY can do. Not everything can be solved through punching and kicking after all. Nami isn't a fighter she's a Navigator, but she had to fight so long by herself it was hard for her to accept that kind of help because she legit cared about the other Straw Hat Pirates. I definitely think it's fine to want more from Nami in the fight sense, but Nami had already given up at that point. She didn't know what else to do and was broken down and even though she came to help the village take on Arlong afterwards she still knew she couldn't do anything to beat Arlong. Luffy also isn't the type to really... do a taunt of sorts he's a very straight forward guy so it'd feel very out of character of him to let Nami do that 'finishing blow'

The one facinating thing about the Syrup Village Arc is how well it showcases the duplicity of of the two central characters. It really is a Tale of Two Liars. You got Usopp, who is infamously known as the liar around town who does it to lift his neighbos spirits and give everyone in his village some levity. And then there's Kuro, the liar who has actually deceived this whole town into believing he's this respectable butler when he in reality would have not qualms killing every single one of them. Also, with how ridiculously overcomplicated and gradeose some arcs get in the future, it's kinda refreshing to have a plot that's just "Tiny Village about to be attacked by Pirates! Go Save Tiny Village! Heiress gives us a ship! Yay!"

Luffy’s selfish selflessness is exactly what makes him a perfect protagonist for those who have lost hope. A “true selfless” protagonist is willing to be burdened for their friends’ sake - but in the end, they are still burdened, and the friend will feel guilt for it. A SELFISHLY selfless protagonist accomplishes just as much for their friends but are never burdened to begin with. Luffy fights because he likes to fight - it’s not some noble mantle forced upon him. This liberates his friends to be honest about their needs, to be vulnerable around him, without worrying that they’re making unfair demands to some altruistic saint.
@Laytho2 Жыл бұрын
I mean. Selfless protagonists can still enjoy helping people, a lot of the time to the point where they don't see it as a burden. I feel like both characters can assist those who need hope. And even the ones who do see it as a burden have value. If anything, the fact it's a burden for them but they do it anyway is an even more inspiring trait. But yeah, guilt doesn't have to be a part of the equation and if it is, it's a result of the guilty person's own insecurities that they should deal with. People need help sometimes and that's fine. A lesson Nami learnt this arc.
@kristinberthiaume7634 Жыл бұрын
Oh absolutely, 100%! The true selfless protagonist is still completely blameless, and yes, the friend they help needs to work on accepting help and acknowledging their own intrinsic value, just like Nami! For me, the first arc that got me hooked was Arlong Park. Yes, Alabasta is considered the “first good arc” but in Arlong Park, we got our first look at Namis backstory. We got to see why she did what she did and when that Marine took away all the money she earned, she was driven over the edge. Luffy always cared for Nami but when he saw Nami at her lowest, he stopped her self harm. All she had to do was ask and he helped her without question. Also regarding Sanji…let’s just say you haven’t seen the last of his backstory. If you think almost starving was bad, then let’s just say Oda adds family drama to that and makes you feel for them. Also, regarding the antagonists, it gets even more complicated later on. I can’t say anything without spoiling it, but let’s just say nothing is black and white. You’ll get your first hint of that in the Water 7 arc and it will be slammed into your face in the Sabaody Archipelago arc. Buggy gets better later on and so do the warlords! They introduce the others gradually and one of them is a fan favorite. Lastly, if you weren’t satisfied with the end of Namis arc and her not getting to beat up Arlong, there’s an upcoming arc involving another female character you’re going to love. I can’t say much without spoiling it, but she gets the last laugh against someone who was downright abusive towards her through the entire Water 7 arc.

Yes. Yes. Yes. Arlong Park is definitely the arc that hooked me. Baratie convinced me that One Piece was good. Arlong Park convinced me that One Piece was great. It's such a simple scene, but the "Let's go. Yeah" and the following walk chilled me to my core and for the longest time I could not figure out why And somehow, it only gets better from here! In retrospective, Syrup Village is an alright arc; it's got its ups and downs. It just kinda pales in comparison to its peers, kinda like Ussop now that I think about it lol Oh just you wait, the themes of found family only hit harder from this point on! "One Piece isn't grimdark" I mean, no it's not. But it can be. That's all I'll say, no spoilers lol

In the manga, Zeff's leg was not cut off by an anchor, he had to eat it. The animals censored that, probably because autocanibalism was too brutal for TV even if the manga avoided being graphic with that.

Autcannibalism is still brutal even implied

TBH, I never read the manga. But I figured the old man (Capt. _Red-leg_ Zeff, remember) was too tough to lose a leg to that anchor chain, and had him eating it out of necessity as grisly headcanon until I found out it _was_ strictly canon.

@jqwashere7664 Жыл бұрын
First and foremost, this was an A+ review brah, and I really enjoyed your humor and artwork. Secondly, I understand your sentiment about Nami not getting involved in the fight, but there was a deeper meaning behind that. She wanted to fight, but she understood the significance of Luffy placing his hat on her head; before meeting Luffy, Nami had been fighting her whole life, and FOR the lives of the Cocoyashi villagers. She was tired, stressed and ready to finally put an end to her struggles, and because Luffy is an emotionally intelligent character, he didn’t need to know her story to know that she needed his help. Her rage in that knife scene was the culmination of all her hard work being thrown away in an instant, and when Luffy put his treasured Strawhat on her head, it was tacitly implied that Nami didn’t have to fight anymore - just protect the hat, and let him handle the rest. THAT was why Nami stood down, and the true moment that she began to acknowledge Luffy as her captain, by putting her complete faith and trust in him. As far as the villagers go, they were weak, and would’ve just gotten in the way😅 hope I shed some light on that for you.

Having finished the Whole Cake Island arc relatively recently (going the Dub route because that's what I started with...) I have to say that I think the... "lack of focus" I guess is a good phrase, on Sanji during his intro gets made up for, in spades. Quite a lot from the arrival on Zou all the way to WCI's resolution connects to Sanji in _some_ form or another, either through (then) current events, near-past flashback, or long-ago backstory. Even though he's not explicitly _in_ half of it, I consider it "his arc" much the same way I consider the Enies Lobby Arc "Robin's Arc," even though Robin was... well... spoilers.
@devforfun5618 Жыл бұрын
@@richardhanck972 funnily enough i was sold on Sanji before watching the anime, because i saw him in a game, with a fucking smoking and fighting without using his hands and just thought it was cool, then his first scene is him making a joke of a marine with such class, that i didn't need anything else, and then they show his first backstory, and turns out it was just the last drop of suffering in his life, not the first

The Sanji/Zeff flashback is on a whole other level in the manga. In the Anime Zeff used a chain to cut off his leg to save a drowning Sanji. In the Manga Zeff still had his leg when they got stranded, and cut off his leg with a rock to eat after giving all his food to Sanji.

This was amazing video and I absolutely love your analysis of it and you definitely gained a subscriber. That being said the Mihawk v Zoro scene did involve Sanji in a way, just not noticeably direct. Sanji is a pessimist, he had essentially given up on his dreams. He still wanted it with all his heart but he was afraid of losing his stability, losing his family at the baratie, not being there to protect the restaurant and what's most relatable, failing. Out of all the straw hats, he was in the most stable environment, with everything to lose. Then here comes Zoro, a man who would rather die trying then sit there and not have a chance at his dream. Sanji tells him to give up and Zoro shut that down quick. It would be the kindling for Luffy to set the spark to light Sanji up with the will to join the crew. Like us, we saw Zoro's passion, that he did fail, he did almost die, and he wouldn't be there to protect his friends after. Zoro was ok with that, he tried and that's all he could do. Zoro was inspiration not only for us but Sanji, that those dreams we put off because of our jobs, our fears, our insecurities, can still happen and if you fail and you're still breathing, don't give up. That's why Mihawk v Zoro is in the baratie arc and was important for sanji's character. Thank you for coming to my Ted talk hosted by a Sanji fan(P.S the manga is really good, you should give it a read if you have the chance)

Something I heard recently that really shows how Luffy is so simple yet so complex. When Nojiko is about to tell the Straw hats about Naomi's backstory, Luffy claims he's not interested and walks off. But someone pointed this out. Nojiko says once they know Nami's history, it will be enough to drive them away from her and the village. That's when Luffy leaves. It's possible Luffy's line of logic is, "Well, if that's the case then I refuse to listen." It's a small detail, but there's something admirable about it.

I've always viewed the Arlong Park conclusion as Luffy taking the entirety of the burden of defeating Arlong out of the sufferers hands. Nami had been fighting for her village her whole life, she deserved the chance to take a back seat and let Luffy do the heavy lifting in the end. The second Luffy entered the fight, Nami no longer had to worry about it.

The straw hat is the EMBODIMENT of Luffy's dream, the one thing he's persisted all this time and will make sure to come true, it's one of if not the most important theme of the series... and he just puts it ALL on Nami, the WEIGHT OF LUFFY'S WILL was put in Nami's head and then Luffy says he'll deal with the situation and come back to get it, each time i see the scene i can perfectly feel the HUGE emotional charge condensed in not more than 30 words and 5 minutes

FYI, Luffy does NOT consider himself a hero: “Hero? Don’t wanna! We’re pirates! I love heroes, but I don’t wanna be one! Do you even know what it means to be a hero? Well, think about the meat, right? Pirates eat meat at huge feasts, but heroes have to take the meat and share it with people. I wanna eat the meat!” - Luffy (Fishman Island Arc) Luffy is not concerned with doing what is “right”, he just acts freely based on his own whims. He is not concerned with the responsibility of being a leader.
