I like the fedora look however, since I am a smaller guy the fedora overwhelms my look, that being said. Since I am a smaller guy the trilby actually complements my look and the size of the trilby is more suited for my looks.

Yeah it’s gonna depend on your size, but some fedoras have 2” brims which should be appropriate even for a smaller guy (like Sinatra who I believe I mentioned).

Same. As a 155cm guy with small shoulders, trilby is like the one hat that doesn't look oversized on me, but I can't really wear them cuz people kinda assume only weebs and incels wear trilby hats.... I especially like colorful trilbys cuz they make me look more relaxed and less serious and gloomy, but they kinda look like cheap festival hats so people always wonder if it's some occasion or smth when I decide to wear them....

I too used to be a victim of this. I used to wear those cheap $10 hats that are usually associated with those stereotypes. Now I know the difference and actually got a REAL wide brim felt hat which I shelled over 50-100 bucks over and it looks fabulous! I own a Dark Grey knox hat and I love it! And I wear it with my suits too. Great video and finally enlightening those out there who don't know the difference.

I only wear Panama Hats in summer. I think a Trilby looks great. A bit younger and more sporty. You can get it in the same qualities as you can get a Fedora.

I own three Trilby hats, 1 made of wool, 1 made of straw for the summer and 1 my grandma got me made of leather. I own 1 "fedora" I use quotation marks because honestly it looks more like a cowboy hat than a fedora unless it's sitting on the ground so the brim is flat all the way around..otherwise the front and back dip down while the sides turn up just slightly. I wear the Trilbies more often and often get complements on them and how good they look, I'm in my 30's and most of the complements are from older people around my age or over it. I think the hat gets too much hate for little reason in my opinion.

Wear both like a man, not like a boy band or costume piece. If there is an issue with the trilby its from operator error. The fedora has become a costume piece like the bowler unless its worn with the right stuff. Don Draper wore a trilby because it was the 60’s not the 40’s. These hats are dated so they have a costume effect. Sinatra’s trilby may be the finest hybrid hat ever. Not too high, not too wide, just right.

If you’re buying a “trilby” from Walmart or H&M, you’re not really concerned about your looks, nor take hats too serious either. I know not a lot of people have money to spend on such an item as a hat, but if you’re in the market for a fedora or a trilby hat, you really should buy from a traditional hatter in and/or around your area. They can help you a great deal with finding the hat that’s right for you. I personally get my hats custom made, it’s a bit more expensive, but I don’t mind, because it’s a hat I know that’s literally an extension of me and my style.

There are many trilbies with shorter and wider brims, in different materials and ranges of quality. the trilby is a victim of cheap mainstream touristic hat marketing, but that should not bring town the trilby itself which is a great classic vintage hatstyle that was and is very common among gentlemen.The fedora doesnt suit everyone, and neither the trilby doesnt. It depends on the man and the headshape

also a major factor is the shape of your head, if you have a big round face- you'd look strange wearing a pork pie hat, you'd look like Odd Job.... Trilby's work with nice oval faces, plus they make you look taller- as for Fedoras, they are nice, but it is an older style look. Try on all types of hats and see which one complements your looks the best and go with it.

I think don draper is wearing a trilby because it signified the end of formal hat wearing. The trilby in the 60s would’ve been the non-obligatory or casual hat vs the fedora which was more a socially mandatory accessory during the first half of the 20th cen.

I think he is speaking of a modern trilby, he certainly isn't talking about the style my grandfather wore, which hardly resembled, either in size or quality, the things that I am seeing online today! The height is completely wrong, and the little brim, turned up three quarters of the way round, shouldn't be called a trilby. A trilby was smart headgear. They have been altered so much they should have been given a different name. If you want to know a genuine trilby the best place to see them is in old films, not new films of an earlier time, but films made during the 40's or so.

Either he is very biased, because of his preference for the fedora. Or he has never worn a quality trilby. I love my fedoras as much as my trilbies. It all depends on my mood and how image I want for the day. I wear either with any way I dress, the trilby is for a more subtle image and the fedora and particularly the panama to stand out more. I have trilbies with the same quality stitch, fabric and craftsmanship as my fedoras.

I own both and this is a helpful guide for men thinking about a hat. My question is about the fedora brim itself. The fedora I own has a totally flat brim all the way around, not folded down slightly in the front as I usually see them (like the Indiana Jones style fedora, for example). I am wondering if the totally flat-brimmed fedora is its own style or do I need to do something like wet/steam the brim so that it conforms to the downward fold... any thoughts about this?

Good question. How much have you worn it? In my experience, brims that start off as flat can be molded to how the wearer wants it. It just takes a bit of wearing and tugging to get it snapped down at the front. You can even shape the brim with your hands to mold it to how you want. Same with the crown (some hats are sold open crown so you can create your own style dent... I wanted to mention it in this video but I felt that would be too in the weeds at that point... maybe for another video) You can wear it however you like. I wear mine relatively flat (I don't like the front snapped down) but some of my fedoras are already shaped with the front brim down, so I just wear it as is.

He wore a stingy brim fedora. His was pretty high quality if you look up the original maker. How stingy (or not) a brim "should be" changes over the years, just like all styles do. Also, a lot of it is personal preference, but in general, a wider brim looks better on most guys. In this video I'm specifically referring to those cheap fedoras you'd find at like, Target or WalMart that try to pass as fedoras when they're just terribly made trilbies.

Effortless Gent I agree, it probably is location dependent, you could probably rock a hat in England but in the rest of Europe it’d be too conspicuous, it’d look like you’re trying to hard as you put it, and we’re trying to make it look as nonchalant as possible. Perhaps if one really looked good in a hat, some people have the right face and proportions, but most don’t. I concede anyway, you’re right. The Gentleman Gazette, though, the guy is obviously very knowledgable but for my eyes he’s not taking into account his physique enough, he looks weird in double breasted coats made from thick fabrics, hardly the picture of elegance. The guy seems a bit nerdy to me, like if a guy who wasn’t cool in high school got into menswear and learned everything there was to learn about it, read all the books, bought all the right pieces, but never developed his own individual style and was neither born with exceptional taste nor developed it by being exposed to good style.

Trilby are just short-brimmed short-crown fedoras. They are made from identical materials by the same brands that make cheap and/or quality hats. You could mostly throw a pork pie into the mix too. Fedoras are a bit more American. Trilbys, British. Trilbys are more casual, young-oriented, edgy - fedoras are a little more formal. This guy really does NOT know his stuff.

A quality trilby is far better than a fedora. Wide brimmed hats are for sun shade, so in summer or a hot climate, they are great, but trilbys are smarter, more formal hats. Cheap ones are called pork pie hats here in UK. Blues brothers - trilby Michael Jackson - trilby Indiana Jones - fedora Cowboys - fedora

There were many kinds of cowboy hat, the dimpled one with a wide brim is of the fedora style but meant for men rather than women. The pork pie hat is not usually dimpled, but has the smaller brim, optionally turned down like a traditional trilby.

You need to be extra careful when choosing a hat. The form and shape of the hat should depend on your length, width, facial form and head size. Some people are better suited in a fedora others in a trilby, and some are suited with none of them. There are plenty of hat makers who still make some high quality trilbies yet. The best advice is to go with vintage. Although you need to know your head size first, before you venture into buying a hat that doesn't fit or suit you.

Just came here from Real Men Real Style. Whilst I wholeheartedly agree with the overall message of this video - go for quality materials, go for brim widths and crown shapes that harmonise with your face and physique - I do, as a Brit, have to disagree with the distinction between a fedora and a trilby. They are simply and traditional American and British terms for the same hat - the term became misapplied in the US when British "racing felts" with narrower brims were imported and became popular several decades ago (in fact, the term fedora has even been applied historically to homburg hats in the US). You can find hatters selling hats under the names both fedora and trilby with all sorts of brim width and crown shape (Lock & Co, for example, sell some trilbies with brims wider than some of their fedoras). Trying to focus these terms on very specific styles, rather than recognising the true variety that's out there, I believe sends men the wrong message about how to make their choices. For example, a skinny man with a very square head would want a narrow brim (i.e. stereotypical "trilby") but would want a squarer crown silhouette (i.e. stereotypical "fedora") - going for either stereotypical style is the wrong choice to compliment this man's features. Even pork pies are frequently regarded by many hatters as simply being fedoras/trilbies but just with a specific crown shape. It is unfortunate however, that getting well-made hats with the right proportions is not easy in this day and age. I personally like to wear hand-creased fedoras/trilbies and homburgs - the shapes are more organic and elegant than a pre-creased hat - but getting the right initial open crown shape for me is not easy (open crowns just aren't popular these days).

Clearly it's an issue w/ terminology, but I think we're agreeing on the same general ideas, even though the names we call these specific brimmed hats differ. It's tough to do videos or written articles that are consumed by a worldwide audience since we can all look at something (e.g. this brimmed hat) and each of us has a different name for it. I have to refer to it by the names I know and am familiar with, and what my primary audience (mostly US-based) is familiar with. And that's how the two hats are differentiated here. But I'm glad we agree on the general idea of brim width, proportions relative to the guy wearing it, etc. :)

It's not really an issue of terminology, at least not in a US vs UK sense - it's the concept that you are dealing with two different types of hat - you explicitly state that they are different hats, but they are not. They are the same hat, with a continuum of different measurements with regards to brim width, crown height, crown taper etc. You can find hats marketed as fedoras and trilbies by reputable hatters with the whole variety of different combinations of brim widths, crown heights, crown tapers, crease types etc. - in addition to which you can find cheaper poor quality variants of all these hat shapes too. So no distinction actually holds up to any kind of critique. By all means, advise people to avoid the cheap, crappy hats (dear god please let those damn things burn! ;) ) but to simply say, don't wear a hat within a specific range of measurements (i.e. narrow brim, tall heavily tapered crown) but any other hat will always do better, I consider to be, at best, rather incomplete advice. If you did a video similar to the recent one on Gentelmen's Gazette discussing how to match hats to face and body shape, it would do a much better job, and completely avoid this silly fedora vs trilby issue.

An addendum - I just had a look at the guide you put on your site, and whilst it doesn't have all the information about how to match shape to face etc. it does link to sites like the Fedora Lounge and hats made by companies like Akubra - so I think this certainly directs people in the right direction to understand more and know what a quality hat is.

You sit and say it's cheaply made then turn around and say oh its probably made by quality crafter. Which is it? I own both and love both and frankly can pull off wearing both just like Frank, Don and Thomas Jane who played Miller in the expanse. To say the hat looks cheap begs the question did you spend $15 bucks on Amazon to buy it because that's a cheap hat. Wear what you like and what looks good.

a quick Google search says he was 5'7" and 145 lbs... that's not terribly small, but definitely below average (though maybe average at the time? back in the 50s?) In any case it's all about proportion. He can get away with a stingy brim because he was narrower in the shoulders. Plus, it was just the style at the time. Don Draper's character in Mad Men was huge, but he wore stingy brim fedoras. Times and styles change. But for now, the cheap KMart trilby, I simply can't get behind.

I don't agree with the views of the Trilby hat. Yes we have a lot of low cost Trilbys on the market, but some are quite impressive & look good when worn correctly, a lot of it depends on the person, how they can carry it off, also if they have the face that fits....not necessarily the head. At times a Fedora can look overly done with the wider brim, if for instance you're wearing a T-shirt. A straw style trilby would go with a T-shirt (& shorts in the summer), or even a light weight cloth Trilby which may be pale blue, light grey or white, it all depends on clothe situation. A Fedora goes great with blazers, suits, occasionally a nice dress shirt, but these need to be chosen very carefully to look good together. The Fedora is a dressier hat. Both the Trilby & Fedora have there place, I don't think that one is better than the other, as it depends on dress situation & also a person's personal preference. I have both in my collection of hats & find the Trilby to be far more versatile, as you can wear a smart Trilby with a blazer or full suit & casually, the Fedora's not so much, but when you wear the Fedora with the right outfit, you will look top dollar. Don't be a snob, embrace the Trilb, it is every bit as good as the Fedora. You can buy high quality & very decent low priced Trilbys, just make sure the brim is not bent out of shape. Make sure the hat doesn't have unsightly dents where there shouldn't be any dents, this makes them look very untidy & nasty! Storing brimmed hats can be an issue as you don't want them squished, folded or bent, so make sure you have the space for them. Bless

I'm staunchly anti-Trilby; I find the stingy brims to look terrible and I associate the look with jerks and D-bags. I've never seen it worn in a way that changes my mind. But, you do you! If you like them, wear them, more power to ya :)

The best examples of a "nice" trilby in modern times are the ones worn by Raymond Reddington on the show, The Blacklist. They're by Borsalino, luxury hat maker since like, the 1800s. Even with this high-quality, luxury version of the trilby, it still looks terrible. Raymond would look much better in a fedora with a more substantial brim. And yeah, I'm opinionated in this video. It's my channel. If you love trilbies though, then wear them, doesn't bother me 🤷‍♀️
