Couple of clarifications: 1 - Yes, I agree that v-necks make great undershirts 2 - You could argue that most watches are "homages" in some way...okay, fair point 3 - Yeah, John Wick wears all black. But are you John Wick? 4 - Black shirts are fine as part of a uniform (musician, clergy, valet, etc.) 5 - Brown is an underrated color in menswear 6 - I'm adding oversized watches to this list 7 - And bowties 8 - Buy my style course - kzbin.info/www/bejne/moLaZapvjMyLmbM

Bow ties definitely look horrible unless it's part of black tie attire of course. One thing I would add to the list that unfortunately seems to be trying to make a come back...pleated pants. Sorry Instagram influencers and nostalgia dandies, pleats still don't look good.

I actually dig the departure from your normal content with the tone of this one. Really fun seeing another side of your personality here. Also, I couldn't agree more with this list, except for the jersey one, because when your 3 year old son loves the Cincinnati Bengals and Joe burrow more than anything and asks you to wear a Joe Burrow jersey to play football in the house, you wear a Joe Burrow jersey and play football in the house.

I wear soccer (football) shirts as the game is massive over here and there are certain contexts where it's acceptable. I sometimes wear one at home if I'm just going to be around the house or doing stuff in the garden etc. Obviously, wearing them to a game is fine or on holiday/at the beach if you just want a top to throw on (especially if you're like a lot of Brits and you toast just by talking about the sun). I do see loads of guys wear football shirts in public and although I love the game I'm just not a fan of wearing them as every day clothing. I do have a polo shirt with a small badge of my team on the chest and that looks way better.

Calling hybrid dress shoes the "corporate branded performance polo of foot coverings" is the best take of the year so far. Brock, your video quality has gotten a lot better since a year or 2 ago! I like the lighting choices (that sneaky yellow-orange lamp is a nice touch), and the 2 camera angles really help your story telling. Hey Brock! First off - great content - liked and subscribed. Like you said, there's going to be a lot of disagreement - that's all cool. On the V-neck issue - perhaps that could be a body type thing? You're clearly a classic ectomorph, so maybe v necks don't work well on you? I"m much shorter and stockier - really thick neck (wrestling and weightlifting background) - and I get more compliments on my appearance when I wear a v-neck than crew neck. Nevertheless I still wear crew neck 90% of the time lol. Anyways, great video, looking forward to seeing more!

In defense of the synthetic suit: my job has a no questions asked dress code (coat and tie) and up north here - sometimes the weather is absolute garbage. Not beating up my good fabric suits on sleet/snow/driving rain and windy days. The performance suits I expect to fall apart but I don't care if they get weathered and I can throw it in the wash. And over coats work sometimes but certain conditions just cause far more sweating. My 2 cents there. Otherwise I agree, wear a good wool suit (lined or unlined dependent on temperature)

For the most part, I'm inclined to agree. Your overall vibe is about being real which is always appropriate and cool. I disagree about black dress shirts, or even the all black vibe. Musicians, for example, love black as it helps them be comfortable and focused...don't ask me why, but it's a real thing. I, for example, like to tone down my bodybuilder chest with dark colors...and it works...get lots of compliments. I agree, however, about matching a black dress shirt with another bright color. Soft colors complement black much better.

When I'm out with the dog, I might have a collapsible dog bowl and treats. If I bike to my food co-op, I might stuff some small items in my side pockets. I don't play or watch sports. I once heard the wife of a two-time Super Bowl player say, "It's just chasing a ball around". I am baffled as to why chasing, throwing, bouncing, hitting a ball or puck; sliding down a hill on pieces of wood, etc. gets people so worked up and they say the athletes are heroes. I believe in taking good care of our bodies, but not elevating athletics to idolatry or making a career out of it. -- One style that ran its course, hopefully forever, is the open shirt showing chains and chest hair that was popular in the late 70's when I was becoming an adult. That look was pathetic. -- For myself I like solid colors for simple clothes that don't draw attention to myself though I do like cargo shorts as they come in handy for me: I can take a variety of things with me yet not have to carry or wear something that contains them.

I have a pair of what they are calling derbies by Cole Haan, with the more athletic soul and brown leather upper, but honestly they look pretty sleek and cohesive. I think if you go into more formal styles with more embellishments, it would start to look really mismatched though. I still wouldn’t wear them to any actual formal or semi formal occasion

I agree with the list with a few exceptions. The homage watch is a legitimate loophole for a couple of reasons. Some homages are for very old designs that are often unobtainable or very expensive. Second, even if an homage to a current model, say the Rolex Submariner, most people can’t afford a real Rolex sub. But if you just enjoy the look, really nothing wrong with buying a Steinhart or a San Martin. And, fwiw if anybody notices your watch, comment is usually more like nice watch then I’d that a Rolex Third, to some extent, a lot of watches borrow elements from famous designs. I have a Seiko Alpinist that borrows design language from Oris. And another Seiko that looks a little like a Tudor Black Bay. And yet somehow I managed to look at myself in the mirror. My suggestion is, don’t go too far into collecting homages and you will be fine. As for things not to wear, I guess crocs would make my list.

Definitely agree. I began buying more watches from AliExpress from brands like San Martin for certain reasons. If I like the looks of it and it happens to be a homage I still buy it for the fact that the specs on brands like San Martin are an incredible value. My $250 San Martin has better specs than any of my $500+ watches from brands such as seiko. Why would I buy a lesser quality watch for double or triple the price just because it’s a seiko? And like you alluded to, seiko themselves have many designs that could easily be labeled a homage watch. The vast majority of the population is not in to watches. I’ve never ever had someone ask “Is that a black bay 58?” Either no one says anything or someone says “that’s a nice looking watch” which I’d then respond “thanks”. No reason to try to pass it of as something it’s not. None of my friends, family, or acquaintances even know what the brand Tudor is so there’s definitely no pretending my watch is anything but the brand name that is on the dial, “San Martin” Also I don’t have a large enough budget to go over a $1000 for a single watch and I enjoy variety so I’ll stick with my $200 San Martin rather than forking out $6k for a Tudor. I understand people that don’t feel the same and would rather spend more money on just one piece that has heritage. Totally get why they would choose that route. But just because someone chooses a different route and buys a homage watch does not mean they are somehow pretending to be better than other people or that they are trying to play it off as the real thing. I say buy whatever you enjoy and can afford.

The last watch I bought was actually a Tommy Hilfiger. I got a very good deal on it (it was clearance priced, I had a 20% coupon that I used, and an additional 20% employee discount), but when I cracked the crystal (something I have done to most of the watches I owned), I discovered replacing the crystal was going to be more than twice what I paid for the watch. Since then, I simply use my cell phone as my watch, and since it (1) stays in my pocket most of the time, and (2) has a protective case and glass screen protector, I haven't had any problems. I *did* like the watch, and it was probably modeled on something else, but I liked the look (gunmetal silver steel band, and a blue face). I would never have tried to pass it off as anything other than a relatively inexpensive watch (despite the "designer" name), and none of my friends or peers are watch collectors or horologophiles.

When I see the way men dress in the United States I feel you’re preaching to the choir. I travel extensively to Europe and find it amazing how much better they dress. I can always spot the Americans. They are the ones in cargo shorts, graphic t-shirts, sneakers and baseball hats. There is a so called KZbinr fashion expert who promotes performance suites and Collar & Co shirts that are 100% polyester and admits to wearing cargo shorts at Disneyland. I think the main reason is European men are more concerned with style than comfort. While American are more concerned with comfort than style. This may explain why we see so many people in American driving big pickup that they don’t need for work and get 4mpg.

I was wrong, I’ve been buying some cotton and/or linen short sleeve button-ups for summer and they’re probably the most comfortable warm weather shirts I’ve ever owned.

It pains me to admit you’re right about black dress shirts, as cool as they sound on paper. It’s just so hard to match them with anything else other than black pants, which like you said makes you look like staff. If you wanna be a maverick and wear other colored pants, go ahead, but it’s not easy; anything sufficiently contrasted from black might work. I’m a musician so I’m partial to the garment 😂

Not in suit form. However, casually with a well fitting and quality shirt, can easily go with jeans. Fitment, quality materials, and attitude I think, are most important

Is not that you can't pull it off, you need to be carefull with the shades of black and how the materials reflect light.

As someone who wears homages, I never craved the real thing. It satisfied my itch for an expensive watch but when the homage is 95% of the expensive thing for 5% of the price I can live with that.

Regarding the sports jerseys--if you're not a fan, I agree, don't bother with a jersey you're only wearing out of peer pressure. If you ARE a fan, by all means, get the one(s) that speak to your obsessive fandom of the team. It is difficult if you happen to live in a place where there is not a big fanbase for your favorite team. I feel your pain. It's OK to be invisible in public. When you get to the arena or stadium, get the best-looking home jersey--with or without your favorite player's name--and wear it with pride for years at the games. Its OK to direct a little energy to your favorite sports team and wear the colors while doing it.

After further thought, there are a couple fashion rules for special circumstances, such as being a guest in the owner's suite or your company's box seats. First, most professional and collegiate teams have branded polo or golf shirts--wearing that is your best, conservative, branded option. Second, if you are bringing a second colleague or date, clue them into the dress code (match the level of attire you're wearing--which is likely not a jersey*). Third, UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES should you or your colleague/date wear anything branded of the rival team. Don't bite the hand that gave you the ticket! *Lastly, try to learn what others in your company box/suite will be wearing--if everyone is wearing jerseys--and many company cultures do--great! your choice! If you are attending a professional event with someone else's ticket, chances are it was expensive--more expensive than the branded clothing people in the suite will be wearing. Be respectful. Dress appropriately. Have a good time.

Brock, I love your takes and videos. I am just bought some hybrids for one use case. . .standing at a booth at a trade show. Only worn once so stay tuned. I also bought a suit from Sene and I have to say that I love it. I love stretch in my clothes including dress shirts. I agree that they don't have the look of wool but as a short, muscular man I was spending more on the tailoring of the suit than the actual suit which was frustrating. We will see if they are around in several more years but I loved your takes and appreciate the time you put into them.

Cant get rid of cargo shorts. Where do men put ever larger smartphones, keys, wallet etc when wearing just t-shirt and shorts? Also, on homage watches. Did you ever get an 'own brand' can of beans or soda from the supermarket and realise it tastes the same as the famous, more expensive branded version? If anything, they taste better because you're saving money........
