I wouldnt be too worried, their mangum loads are usually good, its the low pressure rounds like 38 Special loaded with XTPs that blow.
@matthewtalich998911 ай бұрын
The problem with 38 special is the cartridge was always below par. Even when +p hit the market many companies lied and claimed their guns could handle it when they couldn't. Smith and Wesson maintained good manufacturing standards but way to many companies used soft steel to cut costs and lied that there guns were just as good. Ammo Manufacturers are just simply concerned with consumer safety when loading this caliber. Modern revolvers from reputable brands made after the 1980's that bare a 38 +p rating can handle pressures that even buffalo bore won't offer. Personally I don't understand why anyone would stick 38 +p ammo in a classic collectable gun let alone carry it. Honestly carrying and transporting a firearm on a regular basis can be harder on the gun than firing it.

I long gave up on expecting "performance" from .38 rounds in a snub or carry size platform. What works consistently (and this is true for every platform) is putting several rounds in rapid succession pretty close to center mass. In a .38, I just want the round to go pretty far into what I'm shooting. If it pops out the back of that target going a couple of hundred feet per second or so, oh well. That all being said, I would not want to get hit center mass with a single .22 short.

Unlikely. Whenever you've got a low pressure round with a big case capacity it's hard to get tight velocity spreads. I've seen this tested by other channels and it performed great, so I bought some to run thru my Colt Cobra & King Cobra. It's noticeably hotter than other +p loads I've tried (almost like a 357 "light"), so I assumed the round would perform well. I wonder if you got a bad batch. I'm not saying that still reflects well on the manufacturer. Love the tests. Would love to see the AAC 5.56 loaded with the 70 grain Barnes TSX. Hope it's a great value at $1/round.

I'd have to guess this was not the norm and something went wrong. Ordered a couple boxes of the TSX earlier today.😎👊

Wow, very surprised by this. Underwood knows that they're doing so I have to imagine they just need to tweak the recipe so to speak. I have their 158gr SWCHP +P load in my Model 60 3 inch. Sure hope those would do better than this would.

Hey tools. Love the channel. Would you mind doing some Speer Gold Dot 124 gr standard pressure jelly test please?

I have loaded 125 xtps before in 38 +p and I could not get them to expand. I'm pretty sure they are more of a 357mag bullet

Wow! Thanks for the test. I guess I’ll stick with something else. I have some and they’re coming out!

Good video 👍 You showed us , what Underwood 38 +P does in gel.

The two things I can say about your channel is that you are always fair and honest. Underwood is a stand up company. I am interested to hear what they say about this.

My favorite videos are always the failed tests. Its wrong to say it, but these videos are more funny when there is a high level of disappointment.😁

Thank the Lord this wasn't a failed 10mm. test... we'd be dealing with a Chernobyl of a meltdown .

It definitely saves us the trouble of stocking up on lame bullets. Especially when they are high priced Underwood.

Thats pretty week performance . What kind of holowpoint doesn't open , when shot to the ballustic gel? Works like fmj almost . Very good an informative test. Thanks from Finland 🇫🇮

After seeing how good those .357 you just tested did it's crazy how they managed to get these so wrong. That spread is absolutely unacceptable, this stuff might do well at 1200fps out of the GP100 but it's a total roll of the dice whether or not you get that. It's almost like they have standard pressure and +p mixed together. Thanks again for saving me money.

I was watching some older videos on an Alaska channel g20 ammo test and Underwood was hitting and exceeding box velocity many old videos show same so IMO Underwood has to know there loading is considerably lower powered and so do other manufacturers for that matter it's a shame actually still a nice test fail data is good data👍👍

Yeah, I think all of it is being loaded weaker from pretty much everywhere these days.😣

You should test Barnes pioneer 357 magnum 180 grain hollow flat soft point 1225 velocity. I like to carry that for bear/winter human defense but would like to see the actual performance

I love your content for a lot of reasons, man. You're intelligent, knowledgeable, you actually understand terminal ballistics... But possibly my favorite thing about you is that you'll get all jazzed up and start just ranting/babbling sometimes, like just an extreme rapid-fire stream of consciousness running commentary, and everything MAKES PERFECT SENSE. I can follow along with what you're thinking perfectly, and it's all useful and/or interesting.

I remember when Underwood sold super high-quality ammo at crazy cheap prices. At that time, I bought a bunch of boxes of their 10mm and 45. Fifty round boxes. I distinctly remember going back to their website one day to buy some more ammo and suddenly their prices were insane. Basically DOUBLE what their prices used to be. I didn't buy any ammo from them that day, but I decided to check out their website again maybe a few months later to see if their prices had come down some, and instead of their prices going down, their prices were the same...AND THOSE PRICES WERE NOW FOR 20 ROUND BOXES INSTEAD OF 50 ROUND BOXES! I was stunned. They were now charging the same price for TWENTY rounds of ammo that they used to get for FIFTY rounds! They don't even sell 50 round boxes anymore outside of their standard FMJ range ammo. All of their self-defense ammo comes in tiny little 20 round boxes. It's ridiculous. There is also no doubt in my mind that they started making all of their self-defense ammo with nickel cases just to rip buyers off even more. "Oh this is super premium nickel-cased self-defense ammo! That's why we charge that much for it!" Riiiight. There was nothing wrong with their normal brass-cased ammo. Thankfully PSA with their AAC ammo is now basically what Underwood Ammo was back when they started. A company selling some of the highest-quality ammo at the lowest prices. PSA/AAC just doesn't have the variety of ammo (at least with handgun calibers...they actually do have a lot of different rifle rounds in each caliber) or the spicier velocities that Underwood did. That was another reason I initially started buying Underwood. They offered calibers like 10mm in velocities that were much higher than the trash 10mm junk that all of the big name manufacturers were selling, but it wasn't the ridiculously high velocity stuff that companies like Buffalo Bore were selling. It was the perfect middle ground between weak garbage and dangerously overpowered. Underwood was basically the perfect ammo company before they lost their minds. Oh, and I almost forgot. Their slide down the tubes also directly lined up with them introducing all of those goofy "specialty" bullets instead of normal bullets like Gold Dots or XTPs. All of that "SUPER XTREME RIP PENETRATOR" horse shit. I don't think Underwood even sells handgun ammo with Gold Dot hollow points anymore. They can go pound sand.
@ToolsandTargets Жыл бұрын
I don't care for some of the newer bullets they are using either.
@MrExplodey10 ай бұрын
That's pretty odd on those velocities. I tested them a while ago for myself. I got 1050 average from a Taurus 605 2 inch, and 1251 average from a Taurus 82 4 inch. And they weren't varying a whole lot either from shot to shot. Granted, our chronos might not read them the exact same way, might be affected by ambient temps (probably colder up there than here in upper Florida), and even individual firearms might make them vary a bit, but I doubt this much and that badly. Hopefully this is just a one-time fluke and not a sign of something worse for them. Though that box was bought earlier last year if I recall correctly.

it's a good thing to see the comparison to the PMC Bronze. Otherwise I was going to suggest you try blaming the early morning cold temperatures for the uncharacteristic inconsistency. You're a man of science!
