MLB debuts are usually pretty memorable (at least for the player). So who had the very worst debut in all of MLB history?

One of the weirdest, best first games was Phil Hughes in 2007. He went into the 7th with a No-Hitter, but had to leave the game when he hyperextended his plant knee. He missed 3 months.

The actual worst debut should be Cardinals pitcher Mike Mayers, on July 24th 2016, when he gave up 8 hits and 9 runs in 1.1 innings, for an ERA of 60.75. Another one of the worst is Cardinals pitcher Roel Ramirez, on August 16th 2020, where he gave up 6 hits and 6 earned runs in 0.2 innings for an ERA of 81.00. The worst part about it though, is that he gave up 4 home runs in a row.

The Yankees AAA closer just had his MLB debut. Hit the first batter. Then balked. Then hit the 2nd batter. Then got an out. Then walked the next guy. Replaced with a reliever, all 3 runners scored. 81 ERA. It was a blowout in favor of the Yankees against one of the worst teams.

Alan Travers had the worst debut ever. He surrendered 26 hits and 24 runs (14 earned) in eight innings. (He took the loss). Seven walks versus one strike out. He was, however, credited with a complete game. So, there’s that. Have you done a vid on on the best MLB pitching debuts? Where would you rank Billy Rohr (complete game shut out, only one hit allowed, a single, with two out in the ninth) His second game was also a CG. He gave up one run, struck out seven and walked only one. So, there’s that.

Considering how bad this debut was, I don't think you'd want him to be the designated driver. Meanwhile, this one game makes me think of Charlie Zink, a career minor leaguer who got to start a game for the Red Sox in 2008. His stat line: 4.1 innings, 8 runs (all earned), 1 strikeout, 16.62 ERA. The one start was worth -0.3 WAR and he never pitched in the majors again.
