This is especially common with people of the groups who are NOT being affected. Like, a whole group of men is more likely to let sexist jokes slide than a group of women, and a group of white people are more likely to let racist jokes against other races slide. It's an unfortunately common "blind spot" for people where they might not even notice something is bigoted unless it involves slurs or is really obvious, just because they haven't dealt with it or haven't educated themselves about implicit bigotry. Plus, some people think that "opinions are just opinions" and will still play with a racist and say "he's a good person, just has a difference of opinions" 🤢

I've been compiling my own horror stories (most pretty minor overall, thankfully) from 30+ years of playing, and one is from 2e D&D with a wizard just refusing to understand just how big a fireball spell actually is, especially in a very small and confined battlefield. I gave him multiple, MULTIPLE chances to change his mind, as the DM, after showing him how bad the fireball would actually be, and he still did it anyways, with other players literally shouting at him not to. He ended up BEING the TPK that ended that campaign, and was utterly baffled as to what went wrong. You went wrong, buddy, you did.

(In the personal setting I've been working on, the sun is a massive bird, and its molted feathers are used as a component for ritual magic.) Consequences story - I think the DM should have tried dropping an "Are you sure?" To remind players they aren't fighting on a featureless plain of graph paper before letting the fireball happen. If the player still wanted to do it, then fire away and let the consequences fall on their head. Also, dang it Roxy.

I mean dropping hella n-word bombs. I was like "whoa bro wtf is wrong with you, you're racist. That's not cool." His friends were shocked and asked why is saying that. He replied " what? 🙄, it's not like any BLACK people are in here." I told him that I am black. I was then booted from the party. Second Story: So other people complain about his character being a coward, and it stresses him out, yet he can't see how him complaining stresses other people out? Also, how often is he rolling poorly that complaining is making everyone this annoyed at him? Either he's playing wrong or has bad luck, or his character is simply poorly optimized for his role. I feel like this guy must be unaware of how bad he sounds; maybe he should record himself post-game (or during the game while he's muted) bitching about all his bad rolls and mistakes and everything, and then play the recording back a day or two later while he's playing video games or something to see how he sounds to the other players while they're just trying to have fun. Might be a good exercise for him. Third Story: Man, if only Hank had rolled with it and wasn't a jerk, that would've been so awesome. Ah well. Fourth Story: Yeah, this girl sucks. If she's this horrible to her boyfriend's friends and makes them this uncomfortable, the sex must be incredible, because that's the only reason I could imagine someone dating someone that bad. But Crispy's probably right, this is probably a high school thing; I feel like an adult would do everything in their power to get that kind of girl away from a friend, regardless of how happy she makes him. Hopefully it'll work itself out and Freddy will realize what kind of person he's dating and dump her ass.

I think the argument for the first story was that the moon reflected sunlight, but they were two separate celestial bodies. However, it is entirely reasonable for a culture to believe that the sun and moon are the same thing. I mean, we have people believe the earth is flat so if an outdated belief like that can survive, certainly people within a magical setting with Dragons, Pixies and Mimics can have a moon sun.

Absolutely! Pretty much every mythological cosmology has something screwy about it. Arda (which includes Middle-Earth) was initially lit by two lamps, then two trees, and the Sun and moon, which are a fruit of one of the trees and a flower of the other respectively, each guarded by a Maia. Oerth (the Greyhawk setting) has a geocentric system, and most settings on the Prime plane are within crystal spheres. Hell, if the player starts to spout physics, all one need do is point out that this is a universe with four elements, not a periodic table of 120-odd...

@@WhyYouMadBoi I disagree with the fallacy part of especially in terms of the game/world that the story/games the are playing threw takes place in. Dragons and pixies exists meaning it’s POSSIBLE for X or Y to exists, because it means the world is magical and more fantastical then our own, I’E certain things arnt going to and don’t have to make sense. In a since it’s another way of saying “suspension of disbelief” which if you want to enjoy a story you should have. It’s not like the sun and moon being or not being the same entity breaks the game or story. Plus in the realm of dnd the world isn’t really set up the same way our earth is. Science at the very least interns of the positioning of planets and stuff doesn’t matter when the “how does it work” not hold anything over the story. Also the player hood no right to know how it works. Especially not from the get go. If he wants to find out how it works or weather it’s tru in character that should be something to work towards in game but for something like “are these fantasy religions true in the world I’m in?” In terms of what the player vs the character knows neither have the right to know unless the DM allows it because it holds no stake over their character or story.

The fireball one hurts me and I agree with the player on this one. Gm can sometimes be very pick and choose on what fireball destroys and what it doesn't because a lot of gm have a fireball bias. I seen fireball destroy important items far more then I've seen it destroy the floor, gear, and load of other stuff that it should. Fireball and this goes for 5e doesn't damage items that are being worn or carried, while in pathfinder it is said to burn metals and destroy an area. This is why fireball is iffy and dangerous especially if a gm starts saying that it destroys important items.

Like, I’m black, and most of my friends are of some minority group or another but we are all for “race based jokes” about each other, but when someone serious even if they try to play it off as a joke you can tell, there’s a certain level of venom in their words. But even if she is joking one practice me and my friends use when meeting new people is well ask the mutual friend “are they our humor or no?” If yeah, we rope them into the joke pool and let them know “hey, if you dish it out you’re going to have to take it” if no we can the racial jokes and overly dark comedy all together and just pop each other with regular snipes and and such. Personally, I tend to ask my players "Are you sure?" and just try to kind of nudge them into understanding the consequences of their actions beforehand, rather than afterwards and refusing to let them retcon the action. Still, arguing with the DM for that long is a major disruption so...

Am I the only person who thinks that the DM was an asshole for not at least warning the player that his fireball would burn the book they were looking for and give him a chance to change his mind? I know it sounds like common sense, but newbie players often treat D&D like a video game and you really should be trying to help them break that habit and learn how to get immersed and roleplay. Also why did the DM wait until hours later to tell the players that they destroyed the book? Shouldn't he have described the books being burned when it actually happened? Why would he hide that information from them until much later?
@hiro4344
@hiro4344 2 жыл бұрын
Yes! I said the same in another reply. He should have said in the moment the books were also burning even if he didn't do the customary "Are you sure?" first. Pulling out the rule book hours seemed more like an a-hole power move.

With a newer player maybe, but second-guessing players' decisions can come across as really patronising and like your trying to play the game for them. Being that hands-on can cause bad feelings when you miss something and aren't so lenient on a different occasion. Sometimes there are going to be things you miss until they resolve (stuff like "oh hey, that spell isn't dismissable") or you think players are going for one thing when they're actually going for something else (for example, if you think they're throwing a bag of flour for a bootleg fireball when they're actually using it as a smokescreen). I also tend to find games more satisfying if I know the GM will let me fail. Personally, I'll point stuff out if the map is ambiguous (most often with Web-type spells that need to be anchored between surfaces, the area they'll actually cover isn't always clear) and subtly hint stuff if I think someone's doing something they'd want to retcon. In the fireball example for instance, drawing/gesturing the radius of the fireball while saying something like "so if you're aiming here it will hit everything in this area" would have been sufficient.

I had to deal with a touch of racism coming from a player at my table that was about 10 years old at the time. She had started calling me "boy" that day seemingly out of nowhere. Now her mom was also a player and explained to her why calling a black man "boy" was not cool. We get to the hosts house and start playing. About 20 min in 10 year old starts with her shenanigans again and I straight up kick her from the table and continue on. She goes into the next room and starts wailing and her mom apologizes profusely. I accept her apology but tell her that her daughter is going to be out for the rest of the session.

Yeah, unfortunately kids are parrots. When my nephews started experimenting with swear words when they were all like seven and under it was hard to break them of it. Sister and Bro-in-law who swore when they thought the kids weren't listening were pikachu faced because they were anything but perfect at being careful. So that kid picked it up from someone she probably looked up to. Not her mother obviously, maybe a friend at school who picked it up, or her own father. Who knows? There's also something exciting about when you're told not to say something as a kid so in defiance you say it again to test if you'll get away with it without even understanding what you're doing. And then, you too, little child, are pickachu faced when you get disciplined.

Intro: I enjoy logic in fantasy worlds, but that's just petty. It's a god taking a physical form and may not even be the reality of what's going on, just what worshipers believe. Not everything needs to be "realistic." Consequences for My Actions?!: I play a lot of Skyrim, and even I know that fireball affects the environment and it's hard to hide killing someone with a large weapon. At least they weren't being murderhobos. That is the true horror of "what are consequences?" stories. AITA For Complaining at My Party?: If your game meant for relaxing requires you to "de-stress" in such a way, than you might want to reevaluate your dynamic with the group. *Sigh* Why Is It Always Hank?: At least the DM stopped the direct PvP. However, physical assault is a much more serious crime, one that should cause the one doing the assault to be kicked out of the group until they get anger issue management. Also, how did the DM not see this coming? Hank hasn't shown much self restraint, so him being the bandit boss could have easily go south (which it did). Cool in concept, the problem was the player who wanted the role wasn't fit for it. Yeah... That's Racist: D&D-wise, talk to Roxy about her behavior and how it makes the game less fun. Doubt it will work, considering her attitude out of the game, but still. Maybe have Freddy there so she can't twist their complaints later. As for the out-of-D&D stuff, you need to talk to Freddy. If she's as toxic as she sounds, there may be more manipulation than OP realizes. It's not fun, but what needs to be done to help friends rarely is. As for Crispy, take a week off. After all the videos made, one week off shouldn't be too much of an issue.

The answer to bigotry is to call it out on the spot, take the person to task about it. Racism, homophobia, transphobia, sexism... call them out on it. If they don't stop, stop socialising with them - and make it clear to DM, other players etc that you're leaving because the player's a bigot. Find somewhere else with people who aren't bigots. The "No D&D is better than bad D&D" adage applies, here.

Fireball dm is in the wrong in my book. 100% warning a player about to cast fireball that there are flammable books etc in the range is just good form as a dm. Using a player not fully understanding a spell as a gotcha the Mcguffins gone is unnecessary. If the warning is given then they go for it, then it's the players fault.

Intro- my friend's campaign world has 2 suns- and is flat...on the back of a celestial tortoise... Story 1- sounds like the story a Mob Guy would tell about a mob informer that died from multiple gunshot wounds: Mob Guy- "He commuted suicide." Cop: "Suicide!? He was shot 15 times!" Mob Guy: "Well, he wanted to make sure he did it right!" Story 2- this type of behaviour from OP might be OK in certain situations or among long time friends but as OP is the newcomer he does come across as rude and- in this situation- he is the a-hole Story 3- Wait- they continued for 5 years with Hank? Hank must have been tolerable at some point but considering he started the campaign as a hidden BBEG, I'm not so sure... Story 4- Freddie seems to be extremely desperate for a GF if he puts up with Roxie's BS. Time for OP to cut lose Freddie and his tumor of a GF just for their own sake and if Freddie can't see that then OP should hope he gets help- he might be being bullied himself- unless he's more like Roxie than OP thinks...

I have a few questions, so does the suns revolve around the tortoise or does the tortoise revolve around the two sun? How big is the suns are they bigger or smaller than the tortoise? What's the day/night cycle aka how many hours in day/night. What about seasons? Do people fall off the tortoise? Is the tortoise like alive and knows about the world or is it more lovecraftian that if it ever turns or move in a erratic movement will the world end and the tortoise doesn't care? How do people know they are on a tortoise? How many moons does this place have? Are there other plant-tortoise around or is it just this one?

What do you do when you can’t stand the romantic partner of a friend? Assuming of course that you have already tried to be kind, polite, noncommittal and given it time to see if that person would grow on you. Some people are nervous and not at their best the first time they meet the friend circle (or family) of their significant other. Other people can be a bit of an aquired taste. But you already did that and this person remains awful. So now you have basically three options. 1: Ending your friendship, writing it off as a lost cause. 2: Remaining in the situation, letting it suck the joy out you and probably degrading that friendship whether you wanted or not. 3: Telling your friend that you’re only prepared to hang out if that significant other is absent. You want to remain friends and you’re happy that they are happy, but you and that person does not get along at all, and although you don’t want to force a choice between friendship and romance, there is an unavoidable choice regarding time spent. This might also end the friendship of course, but at least it gives some chance to salvage it. Finally, in this particular story, I would challenge the assertion that everything was just hunky dory between them. A person who shows this much arrogance, entitlement, and unprovoked aggression toward strangers is not likely to be better behaved toward the people they are in a close relationship with. So in this case I would try to have a conversation with my friend along the lines of ”Are you okay? These constant fights with everybody for no reason, and the unceasing unprovoked verbal cruelty … how much of that are you getting when you’re alone with her? Do you feel happy? I don’t know what’s going on, I just see stuff and I worry, you know?”

God Hank could have been the star of the campaign. That is such a fun twist and it sounds like Hank legitimately did it in an interesting and in character wormy kind of way. But then he lets his IRL feels get the better of him and completely ruins it whenever the twist is inevitably revealed. And isn't that the point of a twist? Eventually someone needs to figure it out or what was even the point? Nothing worse than a player who can't differentiate themselves from their character

Aside from the fact wizard should read his spells better so he knows not to start fires in a library, for just two guys who probably have some decent health to them fireball is a huge waste of a spell slot you'd be better off using that slot to scale up a lower spell like scorching ray, technically it's a little less damage since you don't have the chance of doing 8d6 to both targets just spread out between them, but each of those four bolts have their individual chances to crit something fireball cannot do. Don't get me wrong fireball is iconic for a reason but people really don't think through when to use it. Its ideal function is cleaning a room of mooks, not whittling down HP of stronger foes. You have better options for that.

I won't say the person in the last story needs to end the friendship, although he would be justified if he did. What he should at least do is either confront the girlfriend about her racism, or the boyfriend for enabling it. If that causes the end of the friendship, then that's just what has to happen. In that case, the boyfriend chose to end a friendship to defend racism. But I will say that if he doesn't do either of these things, I don't have any sympathy. Continuing to be made uncomfortable is the consequence of his own lack of action.

The one where the players were upset by the consequences of the fireball remind me of one time when I was playing D&D with my group, my friend was DMing and the others kept screwing around and not actually taking it seriously, and pretty much destroyed the shack that was needed for the one-shot campaign. By the end, it was revealed my character was the BBEG (me and the DM planned it together) and as the others fought my character, even more damage happened and with my character's transformation into a dragon, plus fire attacks, plus the other players already done damage, the shack was completely destroyed and they failed their mission pretty much (though they did win the fight with my character) although were confused and unhappy they had consequences of the shack being destroyed. Me and the DM were annoyed the others didn't give a care earlier and only cared after everything was said and done.

Honestly, the whole party would make me feel unsafe as a POC. It's one of those "when one person slings sh*t, everyone starts to smell if they stick around" situations. Roxie is clearly a racist, and not only do they not curtail it in chat but they refuse to confront Freddy because she "makes him happy." Like being a straight up racist is nothing more than an awkward faux pas to the OP's group. It icked me out when the OP said Roxie talks about "political" stuff and then described her being a racist. It gave me "I don't get into or talk about politics" vibes where a person would rather let bigotry slide than seem like they're taking a side. Someone who thinks "All Lives Matter" is a perfectly reasonable reaction to a movement fighting police brutality that disproportionately hurts Black and brown people. It seems like they don't have any Black, brown or other minority friends. They're just aware that being openly a bigot is frowned upon. Yet they're not going to do anything about it because that would be inconvenient, would be "getting political," and make their friend sad. Screw that whole group, no thanks.

I would honestly argue that the wizard who cast fireball should have known it would burn the books. Like, the character should have known this. If the player didn't read the full text of the spell, thats on them, but an INT caster like a wizard should have known. DM should have warned them that it would have burned the area before the spell was actually cast.

I accidentally burned a tavern down with wall of fire I tried arguing that the spell doesn't mention area damage, but gave in rather quickly because it didn't really matter anyways it was a pirate hideout and the wall of fire was to keep the normal pirates away from their boss we were talking with a bunch of them died because they effectively were civilians (long story, DM wanted us to play politics and join the "good guy" *pirates* ) and the tavern burned down - we basically cleared the quest though, so whatever

There’s honestly something funny with the second story asking AITA because I was like this a lot. Now, to preface, I did not insult my fellow players, the game, or characters in the game, whenever something bad would happen I would usually get very mad because the dice weren’t agreeing with me. Now, I think I can speak for a lot of people that, when I’m combat, your dice over the course of five to sixish turns roll above a 10 on the dice 4 out of 15 rolls would probably make a lot of people mad. These moments were the moments that I got the most frustrated, not with people, or decisions, but with the dice not cooperating, which will happen at points. I’m that sense, I understand OP a little with getting frustrated and needing to vent, but venting out against everyone else and insulting them isn’t okay. I’ve gotten a lot better about this and have learned to take dice rolls in stride. Rather than getting upset at the Nat 1’s and low rolls, I now try to twist some humor into them to make it good for everyone rather than go down the pessimistic road and start cursing everything. The anger for rolling low and being able to do nothing will always be there, though, but how you verbalize it is what matters. Now, as for the OP and their group, I get the feeling this guy might be the “butt of the joke” because the players are fed up with his toxic behavior when the game doesn’t go his way, which, in all fairness, isn’t the best feeling if you’re made the butt of the joke all the time without your consent. That doesn’t excuse the behavior, but I think we’ve all played a character that was the butt of a joke one too many times and know how grating that can be.
