I think swapping the speaker and battery could have been the ticket especially with the high quality small speakers that are out there. Also you could probably down clock the cpu in the raspberry pi since it's overpowered for PS1 and squeezed more playtime out of a 1000 - 1200 mah battery sitting where the speaker now lives. That being said, you all did a great job designing this thing. I could see people using this board with 3D printed shells to replicate this project and tweaking the design to perfect a great concept.
@bash_maxwellАй бұрын
With a device so small and personal, maybe a speaker can be jettisoned all together and just depend on the headphone jack for sound?
@rastamouse7861Ай бұрын
@bash_maxwell speakers are so small nowadays you wouldn't need to omit one.

Swapping the existing display cable for a ribbon cable would save some space as well. Maybe a display with a different connector too.

YveltalGriffin build a PSone portable called the "PS Hanami" it uses a real and complete board simply cut in the middle and then rewired the two halves back together!
@AlexGamingConsoleАй бұрын
There's already a thing named that plus the original parts really don't matter that would limit it more than it already is.
@KalvinjjАй бұрын
That would be really awesome, and wouldn't require too extreme soldering skills, everything on the PS One is at most QFP packages, no BGAs from my memory. Then again just the CPU alone is like the footprint of that screen, the chips are quite big.

Ever think how wild it is that this Pi powered contraption runs a bright screen and emulation off a rechargeable battery but the Sega Game Gear ate up 6batteries in an hour. What a time to be alive.
@VOANАй бұрын
Yeah but do realize emulation is not like native hardware so it doesn't eat through batteries like crazy. Emulation is just software and software usually don't consume battery that much. Both the Game Gear and Sega Nomad was 100% native hardware in portable form so both will consume batteries much more than an emulation handheld.
@AndyMitchellUK26Ай бұрын
Don't forget that the Game Gear had a full on fluorescent tube running at 130 volts for the backlight. That was crazy impressive to do that in a handheld.
@Samuell12189 күн бұрын
You are not kidding game gear eats AA's I still have mine and between the batteries draining and the brightness nob's post breaking due to faulty design it's almost impossible to play it for any length of time

Fascinating build. I would be very tempted to sacrifice one of these rare controllers for the job & your use of a prebuilt battery controller was neat, I have a bunch of those exact controllers in my parts bin. Well done, it’s a great device. FYI: 9:20 the Raspberry Pi Zero 2 is a standalone SBC, not a compute module.

As a concept, it's cool. Despite it flaws, I definitely would have wanted one as a teen back in a mid-90's. Would love to see what a 2.0 build could be like with the custom shells and more effican't screens and components. Even a few more millimeters of extra space in the shell could afford a much bigger battery.

Funny to see my fiancé’s cousin (Hairo Satoh; haihaisb) credited on your video. He fixed and upgraded my GB Pocket and GBA SP as a birthday gift for me. The guy really is very talented in the GameBoy mod scene and I think he makes some really unique designs for his units compared to some of the generic shell swaps you find people selling on Marketplace. Really cool to see his effort getting recognized by some of the bigger KZbinrs out there.

Just a couple of ideas to solve the battery life issue. You could do one of two things. 1: 3D print a spacer to use a larger and wider flat lithium cell. This would also open up the two spaces you used for stereo speakers. 2: 3D print a new rear housing with palm swells. This would add space for lithium cells, triggers, and retain the nice and branded front housing.

This video is the perfect example of why I love the retro handheld community so much. Incredible concept and execution.
I'd really love to see this improved to fix the small things you mentioned in the video - battery, round display, surface mount components. This could be a truly amazing project with some tweaks. Optimisation of the board design and components, plus that custom shell could easily increase the battery capacity.

@ccricersАй бұрын
Maybe the actual horror part of this project is seeing one of those rare controllers being chopped up! At least the project comes with 3D model files and it's way better to 3D print a replica in this case. I do find the design very cool and it's tempting to make improvements on the idea

It's so satisfying to see a whole controller being converted in to a full fledge handheld console. My advise for portable console projects like these would be to use phone speakers. You can salvage them from old broken phones or buy the speaker as a replacement part. I would recommend to use those phone speakers which have tiny foam balls inside them. Those types of speakers will significantly improve the soun d quality of these handhelds.
