Although I don't use rider plugins often, I have to say that the comparison is not 100% accurate. Waves Riders have the capability to write automation, which gives you handy automation points in strategic positions to tweak individual words or phrases later on. Can be useful for workflow.

A compressor by definition is simply an automatic volume control. HOWEVER compressors do exactly that, they compress - based on the ratio you select. A 2:1 ratio means if you give the compressor 2 dB it will give you back 1. If you choose 5:1 then it will give you back 1 for every 5 you give it. The rate of audio entering and exiting the compression stage is based on your attack and release times. I mix for television and film. Often when leveling dialogue I have used different methods including clip gain, track level automation and compression. I also regularly use combinations of all three. Before you commit to one solution or the other, take some time and figure out if you are increasing level being sent TO the compressor (pre) or if you are affecting the level after it has left the compressor (post). One will change the character of the sound as the compressor gets hit harder or softer and the other simply adjusts the resulting sound that has already left the compressor. It depends where you are inserting the effect and what sort of track that effect is living on. There are more engineering decisions required than just the info outlines in the video. Since we are mixing to how things sound rather than simply what level they are hitting numerically, a nuance of using a compressor is also using parallel compression. There are lots of videos demonstrating how that works. Some plug-ins offer the capability internally including mix control. Rather than using clip gain or vocal riding for the dialogue I work on I often use RX9 from IZotope using the Leveling module so the dialogue is leveled using my dynamic preferences and the LUFS averages I specify. Then I return it to my DAW and compress for artistic coloration rather than relying on it to limit levels. It’s all about knowing what sound you are wanting to achieve and then using the tools that will successfully bring you there gwhile also giving you the most control at every step along the way

Hi Lizzy, thanks for your comment. It’s tough to be super clear in comments, but it all comes down to order of operations - it all about what is being asked to change the level and when. It will produce very different results. Understanding this can make a big difference in how your mixes turn out. Especially now that we have to mix to LUFS instead of “peak level” If you want you’re welcome to reach out and I can explain more clearly on a quick call or whatever. I always do some clip gain adjustments to even out the track before it hits the compressor. Allows for more compression without big changes in volume that leave nasty artifacts. Another thing you can use is a clipper or some saturation to cut off peaks before compressing.

Audio compression decreases the difference between loud and quiet sounds across all frequencies, making it more uniform. The Vocal Rider by Waves doesn't change frequency balance. Instead, it keeps the volume consistent, doing what sound engineers have been doing manually for years through fader automations. So, they both adjust volume, but compression also impacts frequency balance, while Vocal Rider automates volume adjustment without affecting frequencies.
@JordanSchorMusic

Compression isn't a transparent process. "Transparent compressors" generally don't impart much in the way of character, but you can literally hear compression regardless if the compressor is "transparent". That said the process shown *can* be done without compression, but you can literally hear a difference with how he's doing it. Any engineer who has been around, knows that compression isn't a replacement for automation.

First of all, Waves Vocal Rider doesn't cost $250. Their plugins are $30. They just pretend they're most expensive so they can have everything constantly be "on sale." I'm sure you know that. It's disingenuous to pretend otherwise. Second of all, no one is saying not to use a compressor if you use a Vocal Rider. You use them TOGETHER. Sure, a compressor controls dynamics to an extent. But no matter how perfectly you have it dialed it, it doesn't catch everything. I don't use a Vocal Rider for mixing sung vocals because I don't feel it's necessary. But I really like it for podcasts. I put it before the compressor so the signal is as even as possible going into the compressor. The compressor is more about catching stray peaks.
@DylanRotich

some people dont want a compressed sounding vocal, or to chop up a wav to clip gain every word. also you had the sensitivity set wrong. with a processed vocal sidechain detecting the instrument bus you can have the vocal sit perfectly above the music as it moves through different stages of the song (verse to chorus energy change ect), furthermore, a compressed vocal still has to be automated up as the song moves energies, unless you have extremely static and flat mixes compressed clipped or limited to shit with no dynamic range, in which case, you shouldnt be worrying about any of this stuff yet anyway. Rider plugins are great. especially on vocals and sub bass keeping them pinned where they should be saves time and dynamic range

Compressors are good for gain reduction, but a single compressor can't add gain only where needed. A compressor would raise gain across your entire spectrum for the whole channel or within your defined envelope only, meaning you'd have to also automate your compressor. Also waves vocal rider is only $40. There real work around is to automate the levels yourself and waves is a great start to identify the problem areas without the hours of hunting through a vocal take.

no bro, a compressor works sometimes on transients, a vocal rider is an automatic gain automation

Yes agreed. They are meant to work together but sometimes his stuff is click bait.

Scammers will always find a way... It's kind of sad actually. Maybe holding a true artist from reaching full potential by throwing away all their money on stupid stuff

Compressors and vocal rider are not the same thing. A vocal rider is designed to automate volume transparently - a compressor can't do that whatsoever.

1. I can see a difference in the waveform. 2. The plugin cost 29,99. 3. I don't have a compressor with hold function.

FlStudio can create and automation clip of the audio clip and you can link that to the volume. Great for before compression so it doesn’t work to hard. FL gang for life.

This should be taught on a daily basis. But it shoukd be mentioned that DAW’s stock options are really best suited for this, since they won’t be a ressource hog.

Exceppppt with Vocal Rider you can send an instrumental mix of your track to a bus and then route that bus into the vocal Rider and then the plugin can ride the vocal based on the level of the music. That's useful, although you can make that yourself.

The speed and convenience of WVR - seemingly permanently on offer at a much lower price than described here - removed one more laborious manual adjustment from the mix/master phase. I too was really annoyed by the recent Waves 'subscription only' notification -now retracted - and am looking for an alternative. I'd like automation but if this is the best option I'll have to get back to tweaking.
