No. As much as you complain, if this was your car would you really be banging if off the rev limiter? No. Is it annoying, kinda, but so are really short gears. It's a balance between revving the engine out and requiring gear changes. Keeping the car in third or 2nd and never having to shift on a stretch of twisty roads isn't the worst thing, and because of the revs you can down shift or upshift to downshift and play with the engine. A shorter second would be better no doubt, but not worth the cost nor would it keep me away from that engine and chassis. GT350 Owner so I can actually relate to having revs and gears.

As an E92 M3 owner with a 6spd I can tell you this whole gearing thing is blown out of proportion. When driving on the street where this cars will undoubtedly spend most of their lives the gearing allows you to drive smoothly and play with the revs a bit more than if you had short gearing. You can downshift pretty much anytime and enjoy the exhaust or upshift and enjoy the drive. I guess my point is you don’t have to be bouncing of the rev limiter each time for it to be a special driving experience. Great review nonetheless!
@marcfd3756
@marcfd3756 4 жыл бұрын
I too have a 6MT E92 M3 and have the exact same comment; the complaints about the long gearing are way overstated. In fact, they are wrong headed. Look at the torque and horsepower curve for this car and you'll see that the gearing is really optimized to maximize the driver's ability to wring the most out of the engine. You should also never lug this car at 3500 RPM. Keep the revs up (or downshift) and you'll be rewarded every time you accelerate. Plus, all the You Tubers who are focused on how the car is limited by the speed limit are really missing the point of this car. It's a civilized daily driver that is very track capable and can go very fast when appropriate/if driven the way intended. Maybe the problem for some is where you live. If you live where roads are narrow and there's not a lot of room to stretch this car's legs, I can see the frustration. If you live where there's more room to run, the long gearing is awesome. The gearing in the M3 is such a joy that I'm sure this similarly geared GT4 will be as well! By the way, why so much focus on the launch control, which is just a gimmick for people who can't use a clutch properly.
@gregorydeprins5046
@gregorydeprins5046 4 жыл бұрын
I Totally agree. These guys doesn't understand a thing about this car! Who revs a car to the limit of each gear everyday? This is totally stupid as this car is just amazing and looking fantastic. Please learn to drive properly first and then we'll talk. It's not because you make a nice duo with some funny jokes that you have the rightness to evaluate a car properly. Porsche shouldn't lend their cars to people who doesn't understand a thing. I'm really fed up with this long gearing issue only reported by internet reviewers. This is not an issue! This car is just amazing and doesn't deserve this kind of bashing.

Woah I sold my E92 M3 for this reason. Somewhat skeptical here on your post. I struggled as speed limits would be into jailtime if I ever hit 3rd gear. That motor is so sluggish and quiet below 5krpm (to your question of why anyone would do this). These aren't really good road cars. Great track cars. MUCH happier with my M2.
@marcfd3756
@marcfd3756 4 жыл бұрын
@@cwx8 Again, I think it depends on where you live and your driving style. I've put 125,000 miles on my M3 and never for a moment felt the gearing was wrong or the motor was sluggish. But I grew up driving high horsepower, naturally aspirated, long gear ratio sports and muscle cars. So maybe it's just what you're comfortable with. I'm not a fan of turbocharged motors (we have a twin turbo bmw and it has its merits but it's limitations in terms of flexibility outweigh it's merits). Plus the high compression and heat in turbocharged motors limits the life of the motor. Not many turbo motors get to 125,000 hard driven miles with no problems. If you want an NA motor with a manual, the trade off is typically long gearing.

drove the GTS 4.0 a couple of days ago. And the gearing is surreal on the autobahn. Normally you'd downshift into 4th or 5th in this one 3rd. absolutely hilarious. feels wonderfully old school - even though it’s a bit odd.
@flyingby3703
@flyingby3703 4 жыл бұрын
I’ve got the the turbo 2.5l gts with a manual transmission (they are actually kinda rare) and with that too I always use 3rd gear getting onto the Autobahn, even with the extra low down torque. I guess the manual transmission gearing is actually more bearable with the turbo engine because you have full torque at 1900 rpm...
@fwebe2871
@fwebe2871 4 жыл бұрын
@@flyingby3703 As most NA engines get 90% of maximum torque at 2000 - 3000 rpm and keep it till peak power, i dont't really see any advantage for the turbo engine, especially if you consider things like turbo lag. Third gear is like third gear in any other car, but the engine is capable of reaching higher speeds with the same gearing. If it would reach red line at 6000 rpm, you would have to shift like in any other car as well. The conclusion for people complaining would be, to shift at about 6000 rpm like in any other car, if they are bothered by the engine.
@flyingby3703
@flyingby3703 4 жыл бұрын
F Webe You see, this is where facts come in... Have you ever driven either of the 2 mentioned boxsters? I have driven the turbo one for 7000km and I have also once driven an older NA manual 911 for an hour. Your peak torque pf 420NM in the 2.5 GTS is reached at 1900 rpm and reaches to 5000 rpm. Max power at 6000 rpm. Redline at 7200rpm. Now compare that to the NA 4.0 Which reaches 340NM at 2000rpm, steps up to 360NM at 3000rpm and then builds to full torque at 5000 rpm. It reaches full torque at 5000 rpm where the turbo engine already had it since 1900rpm. You have a lot more fun with the turbo engine in lower rpm, especially because turbo lag is really minimal. If you are above 3000 rpm it is basically non existent. TLDR: Your numbers aren’t accurate, the turbo engine has 420nm of torque from 1900-5000rpm and the na engine only from 5000-6900rpm. This makes the turbo much more fun in everyday driving, despite the long gearing, as you have a lot of torque early on. For me it doesn’t matter anyway, I live in Germany where I have 100kph speed limit on country roads and no speed limit on the autobahn ;)

@@flyingby3703 yeah I imagine, though I was very surprised about the low down torque of the 4.0. expected less. Personally I think the 2.5L is in general the better and more usable car. 4.0 is a very specific thing.
@flyingby3703
@flyingby3703 4 жыл бұрын
911scales Yeah, and the 4.0 is definitely a great engine. If it had been released by the time we got our GTS we probably would have taken that. I just don’t like how everyone talks bad about the 4 cylinder car. It has it’s place, is really exhilarating, efficient (I have an average of 10l per 100km and 6k of the 7 k km were on country roads) and actually can be tuned quite far, if that’s your thing. Just the manual gearbox can’t handle it so it’s reserved to PDK owners. But as a redeeming factor mine is still without OPF 😉. All 4.0 engines have it.

Owning a Spyder (in Ontario too), I’d say the gearing works pretty well for me. The exhaust flaps open at 3700 RPM, not 4000; this corresponds to 63 km/h. I’m almost never below this speed on back roads (80 km/h posted limit) except in the tightest of curves. On back roads, I’m typically around 85-90 km/h, which corresponds to 5000-5300 RPM in second, which is right in the range of full torque. The top of second (136 km/h at 8K RPM) is a little quicker than I go on back roads, and perfect for highway merging and passing. On slow corners (below 45 km/h) I downshift to first. On back roads, I usually switch between second for corners, and third for more relaxed cruising down straights. I agree it would be nice to have a gear between first and second for corners between 45-60 km/h where downshifting to first would be possible but awkward, but second has enough torque to feel plenty quick for back roads.

While I get that it’s okay for cruising on back roads, shorter gearing would make it faster, especially given our laughable speed limits. 140 kph in second gear LOL? Something I like of my Sportwagen 6 spd is that the ratios are shorter than my previous Golf 5 spd. I would be a bit sad to loose that. After all, we choose manual to change gears!

MA L Second goes to 136 at 8K RPM. At 6K RPM (your golf’s redline) it’ll be at 102 km/h. A shorter second would indeed make it faster in some speed ranges, though it’s more than fast enough for the road as is.

The gearing is not flawed, it is perfectly set up. Where is the problem to use first gear, if you want to get the most out of the engine? With such gearing you can drive it like a motorcycle (or an electric car) and can get quite reasonable consumption figures, when you actually use the 5. and 6. gear for constant speeds. The first 2 to 3 gears are for spirited driving. 4. to 6. are for daily use. It's funny that you consider the wheelforce to be right but still want to have shorter gearing, which would increase the wheelforce, maybe without any advantage, as you would have to reduce your throttle input. Just consider it the other way: The gearing ratio is the same as in other cars (just compare minimal speeds), it's only the engine, that can make more use of it. Instead of shorter gears a weaker engine would be a solution for your problem or shifting at lower rpm, which also equals to a weaker engine in terms of power delivery. Something to think about: Motorcycles tend to easily get 100 km/h in 1. gear and nobody complains. Why should you complain about a car reaching 70 km/ h in 1. gear?
@cococly
@cococly 4 жыл бұрын
Porsche made the gearing like this on the 718 so that it would not be able to catch up to older 911 GT3s. It is more like a marketing decision. I remember how 2009 Subaru WRX was able to beat 2009 Subaru STI from 0-60 because the latter could only make it in 3rd gear while the WRX could do it in 2nd gear.

Sorry guys, but I am a bit disappointed in you. I was hoping you wouldn't just follow the same cliche gearing blah blah. I don't know what reviewers expect? You have an 8k rev limit, do you want to have to change gears at 55pmh? My 2011 WRX went to 62mph and the red line there was 7K. What is the top end of second gear in a gt3 or shelby 350 manual? they are both well over 80mph, where is the outrage there?. The disappointment that you can't trash a sport/race car around town or in the mountains because you can't shift your car over and over at 8k is kind of childish. People that do that are most likely in jail or have already crashed. This car is mostly meant for the track and it is still fun around town... maybe not 8k shifts all day long but then again people that buy this aren't 16 year old. I have test driven the gt4 and changing gears at 6k RPM around town was still tremendous fun. Cheers, keep up the good work.

Had a chance to drive the initial GT4 with the 3.8l and had the same feeling about the gearing. The 718 GT4 has the same gearing, but here's the thing-it may or not be the same gearbox, but it IS the same gearing as every other 718 with a six speed manual. (Verified from pdfs on press.porsche.com) Same for the 981/982 S, GTS (the base Cayman/Boxster did have different gearing). So we're all complaining about the gearing in the GT4s but I don't recall reading the same complaint about the excellent normally aspirated Cayman GTS or any of the other 718.

I enjoy your reviews very much. I happen to like this interior quite a bit and I believe it will age better than most sports car interiors out there. Regarding the “long” gear ratio, my conclusion is that that is a byproduct of having a very high RPM range. When we used to drive sports cars in manual gear, remember, those cars used to have 6800 RPMs and we drove them between 4000 & 6000. So naturally, it required more shifting back and forth btwn 2nd & 3rd gear. Of course, one can argue that the overall gearing can be lowered. But if they did that, under normal driving, we would be forced to shift up from 1st to 2nd way too quickly and it would be unbearable to drive the car under normal conditions. Even in generally spirited driving, the shifting happens btwn 4500 & 6500 where the peak torque happens and rarely need to get past 7000. No one who owns these cars and wants to keep them will wring it out every time they get in. The car is very lively and powerful enough to get in and out of the bends as fast as one would want on the road. I have no issue with the gearing and I am convinced Porsche knew what they are doing when they set up these cars for the consumers. In conclusion, nostalgia over manual shifting is great but I have come to accept that such was great for the cars of the bygone era. New cars like these are too advanced for manual shifting to make sense. That said, I do enjoy the manual shifting on this car immensely and I don’t have to run it at full throat to enjoy it. We just can’t expect cars that run up to 8000, 9000 RPM to shift like those old cars with 6800 RPMs.

Yeah the gearing is too long (I’ve got one)... but a GT3 does 82mph in 2nd, and is still an awesome road car too... Not disagreeing, 2nd is too high - just saying, you want a fast car - and you want to rev it out ... your going to break the speed limit Ps - the rest of the car makes up for it 😉

The modern 718 is a four cylinder. And the four cylinder is the best selling boxster engine for the international market. It even won engine of the year. People complained , so Porsche slammed the six cylinder behind the seats. I’d buy the 2.5liter before the six. It has more than enough power and gets great MPG for daily use.

Guys-I had the first gen boxster (1997-showed up in98) ordered to spec- black w savannah beige interior; manual. Then a 2001 boxster S, midnight blue metallic with black interior; manual. No nav in either just had an optional stereo. Hands down; the best daily driver sports cars ever. The S also had optional body colored speedster humps that came in two pieces, stored in the rear boot with top up. They were the best! I wish you had been able to ride with me, my friends and I used the express way as a racetrack late at night: topped them both at 170 mph. Road trips with 1 duffel bag and a girl for the weekend down twisting southern roads...good times with those rides. My best friend had a terminal disease and passed in 2003. One month before he passed, he had me take him out of bed, drive him down an old two lane country highway in Arkansas. With soybean fields on both sides , on a sunny day, top down, he had me drive down this road as fast as I could. I looked over at him and he had his arms up in the wind, eyes closed, a big smile on his face. A great memory. You guys took me back there today. This is why I love your channel. If they fixed the gear ratio, the 718 would be able to catch up to older 911 GT3s, so they had to make it deliberately slower than it could. Because 911 owners , who are generally wealthy do mind a "lower class Porsche" being able to catch up to their beloved 911s..

Present company exluded, automotive journalists have crippled the boxster AND cayman models. I have read dozens of reviews as they are the most affordable models and the models I may be able to afford (used) someday and EVERY time the journalists state “Who needs the 911?” EVERY time. If they put up the Boxster against a Ferrari or Corvette or anything else Porsche would continue to make it extraordinary but because they pit it against Porsches flagship car they are forced to hold it back and create unnecessary flaws in the cars.. Tragic. Wake up journalists. You are destroying these cars!

It's the same with a 991.2 GTS 7M at the Barber PTX track, you could do the entire course in 3rd gear which I did, but managed to go down to 2nd just for fun. My 991.2 C4S 7M has shorter gearing than your test car and I can go up to 6th in everyday driving due to the torque of the 3.0L turbo, which has the peak available from 1700 RPM. Very good balance.
