Midea changed the AC world with their UShaped AC - This one is even bigger but comes in a PORTABLE version. This DUAL-HOSE model is cold enough to cool an entire floor but quiet enough to sleep next to it.
Midea AC: amzn.to/3OAASzo
Midea AC 12,000 version: amzn.to/3Kl6G93
Midea gave me this AC for free to test for 30 days, which I did before I shared this review. All opinions are my own.

Purchased: August 2022 - still works GREAT! kzbin.infoUgkxxsUnXhGsSJLim_XnMHyQK0u3XVaW-CGn I live in a studio and during the summer it gets scorching hot - really old building with no ac units. I can’t express how EASY it was to install.This unit has been a life savior during the summer and some days during other seasons where it can still be a bit warm at night. In this small place is my friend, a husky, poodle mix and myself. We need AC - lolI don’t use the dehumidifier option - I’m not sure if it will leak in my house, since I did not install the small draining hose that came with it. May look into it late but I don’t worry about much humidity in the apartment.I don’t understand why the negative reviews since all things mentioned, I personally did not find issues with. Definitely worth it!

To anybody that's on the fence about getting a portable AC, I was unsure as well but after my central unit went out a few summers ago, I got one of these to keep my space liveable until the central could be repaired. It was a smaller 10,000 BTU device but it, combined with a good tower fan, did a great job of keeping my downstairs cool and comfortable. A month later I bought a larger unit (11,000 BTU) for my upstairs. Similar results. Definitely saved us from overheating and both units kept the place almost as cool as the central air.

You also didn't mention that 98% of the portable ACs on the market right now are non-inverter single-hose units with a SEER rating *below 6* which is absofuckinglutely disgraceful. We're talking something that costs *THREE TIMES* more to run and is louder, more expensive to buy, and worse in every way than a decent inverter window unit.... Want your electric bill to double? Walk into any brick & mortar and buy whatever trendy portable AC you like, and that's what you'll get.

That’s the exact problem I’m faced with now. 1 zone central air/heat pump is from ‘95 and near the end of life but still expensively works. I had 3 window unit versions of this but gave one away and stupidly broke another. Costco has it for $449 until 8/6 and got mine up and running the other day. It’s good for what it is but unpublished is the 41 degree outside air cutoff for the heating function if you need that (which I will use the heat) Mini split would be a better solution heating wise, but the cost is tough especially if not doing it DIY. Just ordered another one to have more time to drink on it 🍺

Another benefit of dual hose is less dust. My single hose portable air conditioner pulls air into the room any way it can, and dust with it. That may not be a big deal, except the same happens with smells, so when someone cooks in the kitchen, the smell in the room with the portable air conditioner quickly becomes overwhelming .

What happens if your single hose portable air conditioner pulls the air into the room anyway it can?
@BradiKal61
@BradiKal61 4 ай бұрын
It is kind of a big deal with a single hose air conditioner pulling outside air into your room. It just means that you are bringing warm air into the room and undoing the work of the air conditioner. That's why the dual hose ones are so good. They exhaust the heat of the mechanicals in the air conditioner and then just recirculate the cool air that it creates into your room.
@leaftye
@leaftye 4 ай бұрын
@@BradiKal61 aside from pulling dust in, and the noise, it would be acceptable if their claims had been honest the entire time. Only recently have they started posting realistic specs. My single hose unit claims 10 thousand btu's, which should have been excessive, but when it's 115°F outside, it could barely keep a 100 square foot room below 80°F even when cranked to the max. Now with a dual hose inverter 12 thousand but unit, it easily does 70°F in its quiet mode. If the claims of the first unit were honest, I would have spent extra to get a dual hose unit.

It is a great unit. I bought the Toshiba 14kbtu heat/cool white cased rebranded version from Home Depot for $650. There are a few rebranded versions of same unit so shop around for best price. (Amazon link in original posting is smaller 12kbtu cooling only unit). The 14 kbtu model does eat up most of a 15 amp 120vac branch circuit capability when at full power so you cannot add too much other AC loads on same 15A branch circuit breaker. If you have to add some cord extension, get a 14 or 12-gauge heavy duty extension cord no longer than you need. It will cut back power draw when room cools down as it is a variable speed inverter-compressor design.

Anyone thinking of buying portable air conditioners needs to see the video about them from a channel called Technology Connections. If this particular A/C unit addresses the issues that most portable units have, then it might work, but a window mounted A/C will still be more efficient and offer better cooling.

@@tovyaweissberg47 Even dual hose units are less efficient than window units due to all the hot parts of the A/C being inside the house. The first summer after I moved to Washington was the hottest summer in the state's recorded history (summer of 2021). Normally, the summers are mild, so a lot of buildings don't have any AC, and they don't need them. Not the case that year. Like people died in their homes that season due to heat. My barracks room became unbearable, so even though it was massively overpriced at the time, I ordered the 12k btu of this unit. Literally saved my life, and it was extremely quiet to boot. Actually, it was a bit too powerful for the room size and didn't dehumidify properly, but thanks to the inverter tech, I just had to manually set the fan to 10%, and I was golden. That was my first experience with a Midea AC unit, and I'm probably a customer for life now from that experience.

Dual hoses ARE great, when they are separated and not combined next to each other where the heat/cool exchange is too great to make any real difference. The purpose of dual hoses that are separate is so that the hot and cool exchange is minimalized. Midea just defeat that purpose by combining the hot exhaust in the cooler intake. Why?

Is there a chance I hit a button I shouldn't have? It's set to the same temperature as before and it isn't on fan mode. On another note, one thing that's odd is the drip stains it left on the outside of our home. The logs were re-stained last year and you'd think it's just water so why would it leave a stain when it rains all the time. Just a couple items to look out for; The exhaust hose is very stiff so it’s hard to adjust/get on the window from an angle, the window panel clips can break easily (I already broke one on mine) & finally the air filter needs frequent cleaning depending on your environment. @@rbrown6808 I wouldn’t recommend this unit for winter heating unless you plan ahead to let it drain constantly by connecting the drain hose provided. The winters in Seattle are wet and humid (especially overnight) so my drain pan was full the next morning. My floor plan isn’t suitable to hook up a drain hose so I’m using a space heater for my heating needs. As for heating performance, it does a very good job heating up my 600 sq ft room. When compared to my space heater, the space heater still does a better job. Although I did feel like the heat distribution was more even when I used my portable ac, maybe it’s because the AC has bigger fans that move more air..? But, I hope that answers the question you had :) Edit: I forgot to mention I didn’t quite understand what you mean by “true” heat pump? If you could explain that maybe I can answer this question as well.

The remote with the app is awesome since my kids never shut it off, so I can do it from my phone or program a schedule. It has been running for me almost a month now and working very well. Very pleased with how this has done.

I had a 12,000 BTU portable A/C that a neighbor gave me around 10 years ago and it worked OK. He only gave me the outlet vent hose for the hot air to go out the window, but he didn't give me the inlet vent hose to stop the cold air from going back into the inlet vent. It never really got as cold as a window A/C at least with one hose and because it was in my basement and the window was higher than the limit that the outlet hose should be from the outlet vent, so I had to place the A/C on top of a wooden box to be under the limit.

Thanks! Do you like this better than the Dreo you reviewed last year? I was going to buy that one but this looks better. How much power does it draw in comparison to an in window air conditioner? Thanks again!
@SilverCymbal
@SilverCymbal Жыл бұрын
The Dreo is a good choice but a little smaller. These will use about 50% less power overall with the inverter allowing them to ramp up or down. We have 2 Dreos and this Midea and they are all amazing. End of the season we roll them in the closet, no lifting and they don't take a lot of space. If the space you want to cool is a little larger, the Midea Duo is the best one you can get. Portable AC's used to be the worst choice, now these have gotten amazing.

Yes, definitely. If you do it like I did you can roll it out and have it running in 10 minutes, no lifting. I tuck them in a closet in the room we use them at the end of the season

Toshiba has the same exact unit just under their name. 1400 with heater $100 cheaper. $599 at Home Depot. Running on auto is nice but if you set too high heat will come out so I always have mine at 75 at max. At 78 room got too cold so heat started coming out. 75 and below seems sweet spot. So quiet too

Its not a easy setup at all. Lol the plastic * bolts * as they call them are absolute garbage. And the dual hose if you have any sort of elevated window that opens sideways... good fuckin luck getting it to lock on, or reach. I'm sadly ready to return mine. For the price I thought it would be better built, but really cheaply fastened together. The window adaptor is trash.. I get why people negative reviewed it.

Because of the inefficiency of portable air conditioners, they put a sacc number on them for the actual cooling power. In this case it's 12000.

I love the Dreo model and I am still using 2 of them. They are fantastic 12,000BTU models. (They are also made by Midea, you can see the resemblance) This Midea DUO is bigger at 14,000, it's black, which some people will like better and it has the app where the Dreo did. They are both really great but this DUO is the biggest you can get in a 120v size and the app is nice.

@SilverCymbal Copy that. Good info - thanks. I actually purchased the Dreo after seeing your video. 🙂. I'm on the West Coast though, and the window kit they send seems sized for top down windows so I had to cut one of the pieces because it was blocking the vent hole. The other negative is they don't provide pieces to accommodate a sliding door and it took me months to get them to send them to me. Then they didn't send any pins for the pieces. Frustrating! The unit cools well though.

Do you (or anyone else reading ) know if this can be turned sideways and put in a patio door? I realize I would probably need another board or panel to extend up -- I've done that before with other portable air conditioners -- but is the hose flexible enough to be turned?

I have the same air conditioner. The remote Scheduling is great. It will turn the air conditioner on when you want to use it, but the remote off does not work. I called customer service and for whatever reason it will turn on the air conditioner at whatever time you set, but it will not shut it back down.

Wheres the filter for the hot side of the coil? I have an LG single hose that believe it or not HAS NO WAY TO CLEAN THE CONDENSER(hot side) WITHOUT DISSESSEMBLY. and there is no filter for it so it plugs up with the same house dust the cold side filter will catch.

I have a offgrid request/question for all you solar energy experts out there: What does it take to run this unit off say a powerstation for 12 hours, ie 6PM to 6AM (if running the unit on AC mode at medium fan speed but temp say at 72 degrees?) The criticism with large portable AC like this, or any portable or window AC unit's, is they're expensive to run ie not that energy efficient. Assuming there are battery powerstation's that could run the unit at night for this long, what kind of solar panel or panels would it take to power the right powerstation? This question mainly apply's to the millions of people who don't need the 475 to 675 sqft of space cooled, during the day, but need it ready to be cooled off at night, (especially large master bedroom type needs for sleeping purposes, who live in areas of Texas, California, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, ) where it's often over 80 to 95 degrees after 6PM still between early May and late August/early September.

@@SilverCymbal oh wow! So you initially got the Midea in the video review you did and then apparently found the Whynter ones I mentioned and concluded what I did a full year before me! Do you own 4 of these now? (The initial Midea and the 3 Whynter’s?) There didn’t seem to be many 14,000 btu maintaining a high 12,000 btu SACC rating so I was thinking they were probably the same. When the SACC ratings are way lower than the older ASHRAE BTU guidelines it’s a sign to look elsewhere generally.

When portable AC units first came out many Chinese restaurants around me began installing them around the dining area, but they didn't vent the hot air from the condenser to the outside. Result was they heated up the restaurant (1st law of thermodynamics). Window AC units have always been less efficient since less coil area. A lower BTU unit will be more efficient since all have around the same coil area and airflow.
