I’m a Christian not a Catholic yet I listen to your weekly homilies with great anticipation! You preach like a Protestant minister which I thoroughly enjoy. Sad to hear you will be steeping down. Interesting there’s a mandatory retirement age for you but not for many of the hierarchy of the Catholic Church. Your mind is so sharp, and your wisdom is priceless. Thank you for all that you have done. You have brought so much wisdom, and knowledge into my life about our Lord Jesus Christ. God bless you and your family

Actually there is a mandatory retirement for much of the hierarchy and it is 75 years old. The only one who is not under some kind of retirement rule is the Pope, the pope can't be made to retire. The rules for most Catholic clergy, and it varies slightly by diocese (the Ordinariate of the Chair of Saint Peter is its own diocese) is that you must submit your letter by the age of 75. The bishop doesn't have to immediately accept it. I have known priests and deacons to submit their letters and not actually be retired for years. Others have their retirements accepted immediately, depending on diocesan rules and local clergy customs. Even Bishops must submit their retirements to the pope by 75. (He may or may not choose to accept them). In some dioceses, a priest or deacon might ask for retirement as early as 70, sometimes sooner if health or life circumstances dictate. However, retirement likely doesn't mean that Father Meeks is "going away." Most priests and deacons retire with their faculties, and what that means in practical terms is that they will continue to minister, but a retired cleric is quite a bit more free to say "no" to things he otherwise might have had to do when he was "active."

Your retirement comes too soon, Fr Meeks. The fact that you have such an extensive following proves how much of a need you are filling for Catholics and others who seek your thoughts and advice. You are a servant of our Lord, and your flock extends far beyond Maryland. The freedom to write a column on social media or continue your KZbin video allows you to broaden your discussion while not dealing with the day-to-day responsibilities of a pastor. Thankfully, your words will live on in our hearts and can be heard over and over again through this database. GOD BLESS YOU!

The Catholic church in all Christian churches are in enough trouble in this Century right now! I personally know Priests in their 80s and 90s and still working. It's a shame that this bishop is letting a great priest go!
@DavidOatney Жыл бұрын
I don't think Father Meeks is being let go by any stretch of the imagination. He has reached the retirement age for all clergy, 75. The Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter is probably the most stable of all the three Anglican Ordinariates, and they are any position to begin to pass leadership on to the next Generation. I think that in order to guarantee that stability Bishop Lopes is keen to do that. That doesn't mean Father Meeks is going away. I'm sure he's going to remain a priest in good standing and he's going to go right on saying masses and preaching. The reality is that you see priests working into their eighties and nineties in many cases because they want to, not because they have to. Retirement frees a cleric from most of his parochial and diocesan obligations, but he's free to continue ministering. Something tells me Father Meeks will almost certainly do so.
