It’s basically a scam. We’ve been battling stick drift issues for over a decade. A problem that could be easily fixed by Hall effect, which we’ve had on other controllers in the past, even 3rd party ones. That being said, they gate a replacement option behind a $200 controller, and a $20 accessory. This is the equivalent of creating a problem so that they can sell us a solution. This shouldn’t be praised, it should be mocked

They're fully aware that the thumbstick has an issue, so instead of actually fixing it, they decide to make a profit by selling these extra thumbsticks. Just take your controllers apart and replace the little metal rings on the thumbsticks, people, they're literally the same ones used on the Dualshock 4. @@williamjackson8782 for some reason, I think Sony won’t let that happen. It would be wonderful but there is a reason why there hasn’t been a mod to replace your current sticks to Hall effect sticks on the original while you can on most others. Little soldering does the trick and it is relatively easy to do with a bit of practice. Hopefully it works out though. Obviously if PlayStation cared about their consumer they would just develop the controller with the Hall effect sticks already installed instead of having there customers pay to fix their problem or at least allow for alternative controllers to be made that will address the problem for them kind of like 8bitdo does for the switch platform.

Sony would have us believe they are to expensive. Gulikit is making hall effect stick modules for the dualsense edge. Dont know when they will release. they already have stick for joycons and for the steamdeck. gulikit als has a cheap 60 dollar controller that has hall effect sticks. The king kong pro. it is not a very good controller, but gulikit is only depended on the sale of their controller, and event hy can implement it cost effectivly in a cheap 60 dollar controller, that als has a gyroscope and accelerometer (both components of wich people think they are expensive). Their is another chinese company called big big won that also is making a 70 dollar controller with hall effect sensors. Again this is a small company that sells a controller with hall effect sticks and a gyroscope. the new 8 bit do ultimate bluethooth controller als has the same hall effect sticks form gulikit. Mind you the implementation of hall effect sticks that gulikit uses only has 1 or2 magnets per stick. there are solutions that use more hall sensors per stick. the king kong pro even has hall effect sensors in the triggers. Keep an eye out for the hall effect sticks from gulikit for the dualsense edge. I dont know if they will also make them for the regular dualsense, but atleast they will create them for the edge.

I just like the fact that now a few companies are willing to use hall effect sensors in controller. I particularly hate the fact that sony and microsoft dont use hall effect sticks just because Resolving drift would result in lower sales of new controllers. Why resolve the stickdrift isue when you can make a profit of reseling new controller or stick. Potentiometers will develoop drift because the resisto and whiper wear down overtime. Hall effect sensors dont have moving parts. I am not saying that hall effect sensors can never drift, but it is far less likely that they will. The accuracy of hall effect stick depends on how many magnets you use. That is why aiplaines use several and compare the data output between all these sensors. That’s really cool. My little brothers PS5 controller recently had pretty bad stick drift. I took it apart and saw one of the green potentiometers was damaged. A piece of the copper broke off and started grinding the carbon off. I then took apart an old PS4 controller which had the same green potentiometers and soldered the PS4 one on the PS5 one and replaced the copper white ring inside as well. That completely fixed the stick drift and saved him a lot of money he was pretty happy. This took me a few hours so it’s pretty cool you can now replace the stick in a few minutes with the new controller.

The stick drift that I experienced was a Bluetooth calibration issue, not the physical hardware. This to me is a good quick and easy way to fix your analog, if it is the hardware. The way you can test this is to change your controller setting on the PS5 from Bluetooth to plug in only. That essentially turns off the Bluetooth. If the controller does not drift when the Bluetooth is turned off (which mine did not) then it isn’t the hardware.

So I’m late on even the PS4 Horisont because I recently a little bit over a month ago got a free one from an acquaintance of mine, so I have been just barely playing that and getting into that for a while, but even though I know the PlayStation five has been out for at least a year or two, I’ve never seen anything like this available. I don’t think for another controller for another updated game system since like the mid 2000s or what not, so the fact that shiny part of the controller, just kind of bounces, and opens up like a vehicles, engine hood, and you can take it off and replace one part for less than a Wood cost to buy a controller to me is irrevocably awesome.

Has the rubber started to peel off the back of anybody elses controller yet? Both sides have come off mine. At the top where your middle finger goes, its just glued on, no tabs or anything. I can see it happening to pretty much all of them, unless you dont touch the thing. Took approx one week in-between the left and right coming off, Now the bottom is starting to peel. Excellent design 👏 👏 👏

I bought my standard controllers from GAME. They get stick drift all the time and within 12 months so I just exchange them for new ones every 4 to 6 months under the warranty 😁. I've had 12 pads/ 6 pairs so far 🎉

This needs to be a standard feature going forward, or until they change to hall effect sensors. If they keep supplying the sticks, this controller will never be useless to me.

Hey @JohnGlasscock I’m a big fan of you and your vids and your always on point when it comes to ps5. So help me out why are Modules sold out everywhere in US but the controller easy to get. I believe they are defective because I seen a lot of comments while back that the modules weren’t getting recognized. The only reason I bought this was so I didn’t have to send out for repair and sure that’s what they are telling me to do because they have no answer to modules restocking.

I got a ps2 in 2005 and the controllers still works. Analogues aren't even worn out. R2 button is funky tho. I would hate to get a R200 pro controller and have to buy a replacement within 5 years. Has quality control just over the years?

Sony can always add to options the feature STEAM has to set size of analog dead zone to kinda compensate drift. But this way there will be less electrotrash and less profits , so it's bad for bussiness.

That's a damn good idea! Microsoft needs to get on that. Just a shame they don't make them like the x360/PS3 days tho, had a 360 controller last the whole lifecycle with out any drift at all, other shit was pretty worn tho, the click button on the left stick was gone a long with a lot of the rubber on it, one bumper was hit or miss and maybe 1 or 2 other things lol 👍

Okay, but are the replacements hall effect sensors or will they eventually get drift as well leading to ANOTHER $20 out of my pocket? Just curious because there's a controller with those preinstalled now and it would be a money saver in the long run unless that was the case.

@caleasthetic

No, because almost al companies order the potentiometers from the same company named alps. Alps sells these in a few different sizes. So Microsoft, Sony and Nintedo all use the same potentiometers, wich have a wiper that rubs agains a resistor to measure its current and determine the stick position. The wipers wear down overtime and give a falty reading because of that. The answer is a solution that was first used in a console controller more then 20 years ago. SEga used hall effeect sensors in the sega Saturn and the dreamcast. But the hall sensors are a few cents or maybe a few dollars more expensive. So every company went with cheap potentiometers. Hall effect sensors are also used in airplanes. Airplanes use alot more sensors and compaire the data to make sure they get a good readout. Just think of the controll / stearing wheel drifting and then you will know why they are so reliable. Not to say that hall sensors cant drift, and the version that are used in controller are far less advanced, but the possibility of these sticks developing drift is less likely then potentiometers developing drift. And they are being used in a a few controllers that barely cost 60 or 70 dollars, from companies that solely rely on the sales of controller. Both big big won and gulikit are companies that only sell controller, and they can implement these sticks cost effectivly in a cheap controller ranging from 60 - 70 dollars (and both also use gyroscopes and accelerometers wich are also believed to be expensive by alot of people). Sony is just being cheap. Another reason the wont use hall effect sticks is that implementing them would canabalise on potential sales of new stick modules and new controllers. Why resolve the stick drift iseue when Sony can sell us the solution over and over agian. That is bussiness 1 o 1 unfortunatly.

I fell lucky still having the same Dualsense I bought nearly 2 years ago and it works perfectly fine and never felt a hint of a stick drift or anything else. The only thing I can notice today is the R2 spring that relaxed a bit but nothing important. Don't buy a Dualsense Edge if you won't make a full use of it, it is expensive and you should think twice :)

Can you out a regular ps5 stick in one of these ? Without the detachable sticks? I like the feel is the sticks on the sense controller since they’re a little more loose. Anyway you can put those sticks into those compartments the edge has?

269.99 Canadian for the controller plus an additional 24.99 for each module. Ouch. 89.99 for og controller replacement every year. Sure it will pay for itself as time goes by, but that will be a long time. You can replace the stick modules but I don’t know if I want to bank on the rest of the controller lasting more then 4+ years. I’ll just keep replacing the og controller until this goes on sale. Probably pull the trigger then. What do you think? I love the idea of replacement parts, just so bloody expensive.

It's pretty wild that within 3 years they have bad enough issues they do this.... Old controllers used to last years and years with me... in fact, until the ps3, batteries were the only reason and it was 1 controller... then it was niece sucking chewing the rubber on the analog sticks, but i took off the rubber and it still worked. I just bought the ps5, i hope these last a long time.. $73+t usd isn't cheap

Great video, but we need companies to start going with Hall effect sticks. 0:49 It is nuts that we have to constantly change sticks or controllers. Over the last 8 years I’ve had 3 Dual Shock get drift and 2 Dual Sense get drift. Around 65% chance of getting drift(for my experience).
