This really makes you appreciate the spritework from capcom, the Psylocke sprite is so old yet it animates so fluidly and beautifully. She was only really in COTA and MSH, as an assist in MVC1 and basically primarily an assist character in MVC2 so she never really got a lot action despite being very popular. 3:32 I've never noticed that sprite of Psylocke activating the gem and it just looks so good. Also have to remember the context, this wasn't marvel and xmen now where it's this huge cultural phenomena, marvel was practically begging people to use their IPs and they were on the verge of bankrupcy. Capcom really paid a lot of respect in these versus games to Xmen and marvel as a whole, you really have to respect it.

Marvel series has the best sprite and animation work not only of Capcom history up to the mid 90s but probably all 2d fgs up to that time. It's true that there were visually impressive works from other 2d fg companies at the time but the thing is that they have one aspect that stand out... like Art of Fighting 2 sprites (came out shortly before Super Turbo) but it has poor animation, or Samurai Shodown 2 stages and art quality but the rest isnt as striking. But Marvel had very high quality sprites, and animation, and art quality (since MSH), and stage design and stage art quality - it literally did all great, like a game character that totally maxed out all stats. It was only surpassed by SF3.

Yea, you don't appreciate how good these sprites are until you look at a game like this. I feel like because the MVC2 screen is so big and wide, and the game is so fast you don't get to appreciate the frames, then you watch matches like this with all the moves and movement and gem activations and you really see it.

@@tonywong8134 On the other hand MSH wins in presentation, art quality in non gameplay instances (opening, portraits, win screens, endings etc), stage design and stage graphics quality, and soundtrack. Maybe the cuts were necessary for doing all that. Like with the other cps2 sequels we see more little cuts of frames and minor increments in roster size, but heavy expansion of gameplay. First of all tag, then assists, and all chars getting more supers than in COTA. So probably the devs were working on tight limits on the cps2 and had to juggle limitations and little removals for the sake of adding other stuff... just like rotating characters instead of having gradually bigger rosters (which was possible in 1v1 games from the same time like SFA3).

I pretty much only play alpha 3 and super turbo but love watching all your old school fighting game content. Seeing stuff like this makes me believe that fighting games are easily some of the most replayable games. I love seeing people master the seldom played characters because it just shows more depth to the game. 20 years from now there will still be a large following for these games because they are timeless and so much fun to play/watch.
