Roll back the tape to 7:17 and look at what your left hand was grabbing, you completed the circuit by touching the metal display cabinet.The shock you received was way more than enough to jolt your heart of of synch to create atrial fibrillation.(heart attack) always keep one hand playing pocket pool when touching bad electrical and you'll get to grow old and hornery like the rest of us. Love your site and cheers from the Great White North.

That’s why it’s called a hot chassis. I’ve been bit quite a few times myself. Could have turned out much worse.
@hestheMaster
@hestheMaster 2 жыл бұрын
The fact that Pete actually touched the radio chassis when it was on was NOT the problem. It was when he turned off the circuit to the radio that the power THEN went through him through the metal switch. The bad power cord didn't have anything to do directly with getting a shock but was a hint not to touch the metal parts. Just pull the plug (which is insulated ) out of the socket so you won't get shocked.

Hot chassis set. Due to the location of the power switch and chassis ground, in addition to the unpolarized plug, the chassis (and exposed metal stem thanks to the missing knob) will be "hot" either when the set is turned off, or when it is turned on, depending on what way the plug is inserted into the receptacle. These can be rewired to ensure the chassis ground is always in the neutral and a polarized line cord attached. If you work on sets like this, you should have an isolation transformer. Also, don't just plug the set in, either bring it up slowly on a variac and/or use a "dim bulb tester" to limit the current in the event of a short. A set that hums loudly should be unplugged until it can be opened up. This is usually caused by dried out line filter capacitor(s), but can also be caused by a number of other things including leaky paper capacitors and other shorts.

classic 60cycle hum... a recap, rewire the cord.. replace any out of spec resistors/tubes... she'll be good to go.. it was funny listening to the guy lying about it working fine a couple months ago.. needs wires.. i was cringing when i saw him plugging it in without a current limiter or variac.. people shouldn't mess with things they know little to nothing about.. however, in the solid state world, that's the smoke test..

I am an official old fart illustrated by my old cane that keeps me upright and that hint of white in my dark blond hair, at the temples. Also the age box is filled with a number beginning at 7 and ending with 0, OK I am a 70 year old retired police officer who twice gained the rank of Chief of Police. A couple of Christmases ago, the first in 51 years with the absence of my wife, who died that year just two days after or anniversary my children purchased a new doorbell for dad (ok me). It is one of those new talking doorbells with the built in camera. I really love the little device although my doorbell transformer which also services my thermostat for my furnace does seem to complain when the mercury drops below 32 degrees and vibrates the windings on the doorbell, sort of making ghastly and ghostly sounds that drive my grandchildren wild when they come for a visit and sleep on an air mattress on the floor. The coolest thing about the doorbell thing is that it is guaranteed against theft for the life of the device. Why? Well it automatically sends a picture of everyone who approaches it to an account in the cloud. I call and say the button is missing, they look, turn over a photo to the police and send me a new bell. The docs say they only keep photos for 30 days but a few months back I had visitors at my doorbell and 2:30 AM. It notified me and I looked at the video on my phone, it showed 5 white tail deer in my front yard,, cleaning up after the birds that had made a mess under their several feeders filled by my daughter who lives in my old house with me taking care of deer old dad. Last time I checked that video is still on the cloud despite it was before Christmas. Ah well nothing happens at my doorstep that I need to worry about anyhow, and I did sign a form saying that the local Police have my permission to check my cameras at will for information dealing with law enforcement. Being an old cop, I do like to support those who now do the job I did for over 24 years.

Pete please be careful with those vintage radios (tube especially) They did not use polarized plugs back then....and have high operational B+ voltages inside that can kill (sometimes 250-300 volts!). The Bakelite knobs are there to protect you from touching the metal of the case. The case was "live" because by chance you plunged the plug in the wrong direction (since non polarized plug) . @@DragonLore520 It was actually much more than a few days. Pete started noticing that Milo was not acting lethargic. He took him to his daughter the vet and they changed his food and gave him some medicine. He did a bit better, but once again started going downhill. Eventually, with more extensive tests he was diagnosed again and they treated him (I think it was akin to cancer) and he did better for a bit, but they knew that Milo was going to be passing. Pete monitored him and then as he decided Milo had lost any quality of life, Pete made the decision. It was so very difficult for the entire team, but especially Pete.

This is why they make plugs with polarity now. Those plugs with the larger end than the other (at least in the US) are designed to ensure that neutral goes to the chassis. You can still get a shock if you are touching the chassis and touch the hot side, but at least the chassis isn't hot. Three pronged plugs don't have that problem, obviously.

In 1971 I was in the US Army, stationed in Camp Haskins near Danang Vietnam. My unit had just moved a bit South from PhuBi near Hue. We took over a marine base as they had pulled out as part of Vietnamization. We had moved our teletype center into a very nice premade hut that was made from fiberglass molded panels locked together with sort of pull pins. It was well insulated because the machines need to be kept cool in the hell that was Vietnam weather. Well the air conditioner was on the fritz and our commo sergeant who was a little guy of about 5 foot nothing and skinny as a rail was going to hook the 220 volts directly to the air conditioner which had the plug removed for some stupid reason known only to the powers that be. The spot designed by the engineers who bult the building was of course part of the building itself on the far end of the capsule shaped pod of sort. The Sergeant was Staff Sergeant Tinny and being small ducked a bit as the conditioner mount extension was shorter then even he. As he was hooking it up, for some reason known but to God and Sergeant Tinny he kept touching the wrong wire on the cable end and getting a shot of 110 or more for his trouble, as we sat back and watched it soon became entertainment as such things do when soldiers gather, soon betting was running full bore with paper quarters being placed on the table as Tinny bumped his head and cussed each time he touched that cable. After what seemed like hours but was perhaps only 15 minutes or so, Sergeant Tinny (dubbed the minni lifer by his troops) asked for help, one of the guys who worked for him walked back and wired it up in about five seconds and the air was cool, so was the heroic trooper who fixed it despite Sergeant Tunny's best efforts. I too was thrilled since I went from humpijng a damn radio in the field to working in that airconditioned wonder because Sergeant Tinny walked into the commo shack as I was typing a letter to my lovely wife who was about 7 months pregnant with our son, living with her mom and dad on the family farm.

Pete I have sold stuff for several years on ebay. Since around 9/01/20 all the fedex labels I create on eBay through their shipping are "fedex home delivery" even though I'm shipping to a commercial address. Before when sending to a commercial address fedex was a little cheaper and the label would be 'fedex ground" when printed. Even the global shipping center in Kentucky now prints out a fedex home delivery label when shiping to that address. It's like fedex no longer prints ground labels on ebay now, it's home delivery or express services only.

Should have bought the radio. I'd buy it if the price was right. Those can be fixed and made safe. Capacitors in those old tube radios have gone bad by now and need to be replaced. That's causing the hum. A polarized cord, Bakelite knob and maybe a safety capacitor will address the shock problem. As others have pointed out, many of the old sets were made with a hot chassis and were insulated by the cabinet and knobs. A polarized cord will resolve that IF - and ONLY IF - the outlet is wired correctly for polarity. Inexpensive outlet polarity checkers are available at home and hardware stores for under $10.

If you have an unbidding interest in electronics, getting shock is considered a part of life. I began my exploration in electrical power at the age of 9 when we moved off the home place where the power never flowed because the farm was not served by power or running water, to a farm that dad found vacant and rented from an old retired farmer who had no kids that wished to farm. We moved into a small ranch home that was right beside the huge 3 story house the farmer had moved on the place we later found out, because the dammed ghost that haunted the little farm house was bothering him. The big house was never lived it once it was moved, I guess he just never go around to it, but was filled with old furniture and other trash that that family had stored there and forgot. Nothing fun for a 9 year old except boxes that had been dumped by vandals who hit the place before we moved in. I was never interested in the content of the letters but I wanted those stamps, and there were old books containing stamps that were used during the last world war to get rationed goods, those I found interesting,, sort of whished I had kept some of those. I did for some time but when I began my interest in beer and young ladies I dropped them off at our local museum and I believe they are still there. Anyhow, we moved to the new place, heat was still delivered in the form of lump coal that was carried into the house by boy power, the ashes carried out back by the same power, just part of my daily chores. Water was a treat however because the drinking water well was only a couple yards from the side of the house, not a long walk as it had on the old home place, there was still a windmill by the barn but two wells on the place, a real treat, and that water well had such sweet water, why todays bottled water could not come close to that smooth cold water from deep within the earth so far up in North Dakota that even the worst chemical plant could not penetrate that wonderful aquafer. So when we moved in of course we had no electrical devices, since we had never experienced a home that was wired. Sure we had seen all the devices available at or neighbors, and relatives homes, and mom had a list of things she wanted. We children were not involved in such planning, but dad knew we wanted an electric radio so we could listen to our shows without worry of running the battery dead, as had always been a reason for early to bed orders. We saw a television many times at our Uncles places, in fact there were days where a trip to a nearby farm was in order to watch special TV shows, so a television was on our wish list. Well first we got a large floor model radio AM/SW/PB. It sounded wonderful, why music was almost like the Juke Box at the bar that allowed we children in despite the laws against such things because dad could have kept them in business with the amount of alcohol he consumed and our trips to town, although rare were always topped off by a trip to the liquor store for his upcoming month and a stop at the bar to get liquored up for the drive home. Well that damn radio had me buffaloed I wanted to hear that shortwave, and the police band had me wising to hear crime action like on the Dick Tracy funnies'. I pushed all the buttons on the set with printing such as Berlin, and London and other more obscure places but all I got were stations in Bismarck ND and Jamestown, Dickinson and other towns in the State. Well one button would go in, but not pop out, so having watched dad care for the old farm radio on the home place I pulled the set away from the wall, under the living room window and reached inside for that blasted button that I just knew in my heart would give me access to the wonders of short wave, and those police calls..... BAMB! I was across the room from that radio, laying up against the distant wall, my head spinning, the burn on my hand was horrible, and I must have screamed as mom came running from the hen house where she had been gathering eggs! Dad from the barn where he was milking the cows. Ran into the hose through the kitchen to find me sprawled across the floor near the wall in the living room. A through investigation including a sit here and answer my questions! from dad led to a new rule in the house that was fairly well enforced. I can't recall the exact wording of that rule but it did include "never tear apart any of or shit and keep you damn hands out of radios and T Vs if we ever get one (we did of course a few months later from mom's egg and cream money!)

Install a ground fault interrupter outlet GFI to plug all items brought in into. It would have tripped and saved you from a shocking experience. Also, if it trips, there is an issue with the item.

when i was a kid, i stuck a plant-thermometer (with the copper end) into a wall socket. it blew me back like 5 feet, and i just remember waking up like 30 seconds later. my mom almost had a heart attack, as she witnessed the whole thing!

Dude, you don't plug in old tube radios right from the wall!!! When I was a kid, around 12 (1970 or so), used to play out old broken TVs, used to get shocked all the time, cool sensation.
