I'm surprised that a sequence break like that hasn't happened already. You've beaten enemies like Bone Chill and 8-1 O'Chunks so many times, but never broke sequence, so I wonder what's different about 8-2 Mimi.

⁠@@gloryholetoanotherdimension Considering the cutscene of Peach and Mimi started as soon as he entered the boss room, I wonder if defeating 8-2 Mimi specifically sets the cutscene flag for the next time that room loads in. It would weirdly make sense because I don’t think there’s any other boss fight in the game outside of the final 2 that changes rooms for multiple cutscenes in sequence like that. Someone please correct me if I’m wrong.

The game kept trying to do something when Bringle beat O’ Chunks, but it kept making a windows error sound instead

most bosses have their "on kill" event allocated dynamically and if that event doesnt exist then they play a default one, but mimi's is hardcoded which is why the script plays and the sequence breaks O'Chunks is in a similar boat here except his scripts just straight up crash lol

@@L_5050 So that’s why most bosses fall off-screen or go poof when they die but Mimi flailed in her normal “dead” animation? The randomizer gives most bosses the default death animation but Mimi’s code forces the flailing one which also updates sequence?

I just realized Paper Mario is like FF. Started turn based Then had a sequel on the next generation that kept turns but made it more actiony, and then it eventually abandoned turns all together for action based combat. There was a game that got teased in the 2010s with a really cool trailer but then everything that made the trailer cool was scrapped and we ended up getting a game almost everyone calls the worst

God so this game was cursed in my childhood. I bought a copy from CeX and it was slightly scratched. Worked perfectly until i killed francis which would always crash. I assume the scratch was through his death animation. Then i bought a second copy a couple months later and it was also slightly scratched and would crash when unlocking bowser, but worked everywhere else. I had to sort of swap discs depending on where is was going. When i got to 23 i modded my wii and ripped both discs, compared hex data and was able to create a complete backup by comparing the sectors and some trial and error. I have since loved playing from my hdd

My best guess as to the crashing in 7-1 is that the thwomp hitting the ground every frame caused the game use most of it’s memory so when Brobot and the other enemies needed effects it could easily overload the game. Not a programmer though, so I could easily be completely off.
