Might be worth just removing the bed to get to the shocks, exhaust, fuel tank/straps, fuel lines, EVAP canister, etc. Then POR 15 the frame and axle while the bed is still off.

Seeing Hoovies face when a giant turbo spools on that truck would be worth the admission price. Supercharger is what you'd do to a drift vehicle or if you want tame controllable powet. Make this thing a monster. Hell twin turbos for the win!

That is a lot more work and beyond what the wizard normally does. Supercharger is basically a bolt-on and maybe at most modifying the intake a bit, and then going to get it tuned. Turbo means manifolds, custom downpipe, blowoff valve, intercooler, much more intake customization, etc. I'm sure the wizard could do it, but he's said before he isn't a hotrod/tuner shop and doesn't like doing that kind of stuff.

You might want to take the bed off and inspect the cross members from the top side, I bought an 05 Silverado crew cab 4x4 and I figured out the cross members were junk when I took the bed off to replace my fuel pump. Both of the gas tank straps were broken and all of the cross members under the bed were rusted through.

I noticed he skipped over them. the repair is so common even ebay sells the pipes. you can chop in half etc.. use what you want. I mend a 99 with 6 liter. At only 124k mikes, I stay nice and do welding. Amazing engine.

Bought an 06 1 owner work truck with 100k miles for 5k. The underside was crusty but was solid. Turns out it needed crossmembers to the tune of $2500 plus a front end and brakes. Now I basically have 10k into it. Don’t make the same mistake I did those crossmembers will get you.

This is great advice. I'd also point out that the "start" of rust he mentioned on the fender isn't a start. That is rust coming THROUGH from the inside. No metal there.

Little rough, but a steal for that price. I honestly was expecting to be like the Subaru you had under it. So... Yes to spray can restore of the frame. Yes to the minor repairs. And big YES to all the power mods like supercharger. :-) Big no to 24" wheels and rubber band tires though (blech).

I have the escalade of this year with the same engine and it's amazing how reliable the ls engines are. Downfall is the gas mileage and electrical gremlins every few years. Easy to work on and parts are everywhere.

Well, if we are talking about a supercharger (factory one of of a LSA might be an option) and bolts on, might be worth it to get the rectangular port heads out of a 6.2 or late model 6.0, you might need to check valve clearance tho, factory LY6 (late gen IV 6.0) pistons should take care of that, as well as lowering the compression to a more boost friendly 9.6:1, and while you are there, LSA/LS9 head gaskets, gen IV rods (they are stronger) and bigger ring gap.

I've got an 04 SS, and I did the Whipple kit (quite a bit more since then, too). Let me tell you, you will love it. A coworker did a twin turbo kit on his 05, and the Whipple is just better. Bolt on, driveability, everything.

What size Whipple? Stock 364ci bottom end, stock block, cam, and still running the 4L65E, 2WD or AWD? I believe the 04 was only AWD but I was asking if you had converted. I would build a SSS NA because of the weight, simplicity, ease and enjoyment. I'm actually building my GMT800 Yukon as a full-size version of a Trailblazer SS and Silverado SS SUV. My Trailblazer had a NA 416ci LS3 and my RCSB had a Procharged 5.3. They both made similar power but I preferred the TBSS. But a friend had a Magnacharged Denali and it was really responsive and quick. I've never drive a LS with a KB or Whipple

Yes supercharge it! My dad and I took one on a test drive and he let me drive it. It was fast back then when I had a gmt800 rcsb z71 with the 5.3 and thought that was “fast”. The 1500 Max 6.0 had 2wd and 4wd so you could smoke the tires!

I have a 99 Silverado GMT800, first model year. Got it in '02. I remember lusting after these when they came out, but at the time were too new and too expensive for me. Settled with putting SS wheels and lip spoiler on mine. Still have it. Just under 200k miles and I've never touched the engine or transmission, never left me stranded. Doesn't leak a drop either. Great trucks, though body rot is definitely an issue. Supercharging it would be a cool project, definitely would like to watch that. Also really curious if those rocker moldings are hiding rust or if they somehow reduced it.

Rust is the biggest issue with those trucks. I have seen trucks with whole bottom half of the cab rusted away.

I also love these GMT800 trucks Hoovie, but you have to watch out for frame rust. I have parted both an Avalanche and a Silverado due to holes that had developed in the frame from rust - might want to pull the bed and POR15 the frame as suggested. As for the supercharger, I think that is a great idea, if not a turbo kit... ; )

Try dropping the spare tire to see that it comes down with the tire change tools. The winch device rusts up and in most cases leaves you stranded with a spare tire that will not come down. After having a problem with one of mine I drop them and grease/fluid film them every year. Also check to see that the rear leaf springs have not lost their disk rubber washer that go into the holes in the lower leaf springs. If they are missing you will get a banging noise when going over bumps. Super charge it.

This was one of the best generations of chevy trucks. So many cheap parts if anything does need replacing it's incredibly easy to work on. This will make a great work truck for someone. Never had to do anything to it except fluids, brakes, and spark plugs. Even the rubber bushings etc. were in perfect shape when I traded it in. Original alternator, original thermostat, original starter all still at 10 years old and 270k miles.

I did a stage 3 truck cam from Texas speed, speed engineering headers and true dual exhaust and intake, and tuned with HP Tuners on my 02 Silverado 1500HD. Everything was worth it. One day hopefully I’ll have a pro charger on it.

i had a 2003 Silverado Z71 and it was the best vehicle i ever owned. Bought it almost new and sold it finally with 275k miles and it was a great truck. Other guy that bought it has like 375k miles on it now only ever did a couple wheel bearings, basic maintenance and he finally had to put its first waterpump in at 350k

Check the spare tire cross member. Mine rotted badly, even after maintaining the frame yearly. The spare rim was bad too. The area above the spare, the cross member rots. I welded in 5" c channel. Take the bed off, inspect everything for corrosion- brake lines typically corrode, AT trans cooler and fuel lines can also. Replace all with SS lines. Easier with the bed off. My EVAP can bracket also rotted away. My hood will need replacement, rotted just like this one, just not as bad.

That’s a cool truck. Throw a basic blower setup, an ecu and an exhaust on it. Tidy up the paint and interior and you’re done. Then give it that new black ice smell.

Last thing expected was to watch you spoon the guys lol... ah good fun. Looks like a great find. A new hood, some good detail and buffer work on the paint and interior. Plus the mechanical items you discovered. A nice set of wheels and tires and some tuning and such to boost the motor 👌 . If you put into it the amount you bought it for..maybe a little more. It will be a great truck. Good project to try some "dry ice" media blasting to clean up the under carriage and engine compartment. Then some ceramic graphite coating.. ... 🤔

This was a good purchase! Don't go too crazy with upgrades and mods, but try to make the most of the good bones on her. I'd love to see you take it to a drag strip before and after to get some numbers Definitely get this old girl a supercharger, hood, new spare, and a rattlecan restoration (after a vigorous wire wheeling). Oh and get that poor thing detailed inside and out!

I own here in Australia a 2004 GM SS V8 350 Gen 1 Hothouse green Ute ! This cars were done Holden's Special Vehicles, they take a big batch of cars,strip the crap off and add sports suspension, leather seats with SS embroidered on them, SS badging, LS diff, worked V8 Leather stitched steering wheel , sports shocks and mate ! do these things fly ! The car lifts up at the front when you take off and it being light bloody moves !!! Doug DeMuro has done a review on a GMH SS 350 V8 Ute and he could not believe the power,sound and coolness they bring ! I will never sell mine because everyday I have fun driving it :) So my American mates look up our utes and what we can do to them :))))

Lq9 6.0 in the SS and Escalade only put out half their rated power with the factory tune . This was done to prevent warranty claims . Severely retarded ignition timing and torque management was used . A good tuner can reflash with a proper tune for 91 octane fuel . Power increase is huge , as well as 5mpg increase and cooler running engine .

Man, I have always wanted an SS, specifically a later RWD one. The clean ones have ALWAYS been to high for what they are. It isn't special enough to warrant the price in my opinion. If it had the LS6 or LS2 I wouldn't complain about the price. Plus at roughly 20 years old, that body cladding starts coming loose and finding replacement parts is a pain. I was out to find one with 120-150 thousand miles and ran across my current truck. It is a 04 5.3 LS extended cab with 64,000 miles. I work from home most of the time so those miles will stay down. I'll slap an SS front bumper cover on mine and do a 6.0 or 5.3 based 7 liter from texas speed and have a fun truck. It is lowered with Hotchkis front coils and Belltech leaf springs. Really the only thing I'm missing out on is the torsion bar front suspension.

Sadly I think it's because people who bought these new, couldn't really afford them. By the time they got these SS trucks home, they probably had no choice but to daily drive them/use them as work trucks to justify the high price. Also, 2005-2008 was a bad time to be buying new vehicles. This is why most 2005-2007 Mustangs/Corvettes have such high miles right now. I bet people who bought those cars new, didn't plan on using them everyday until the market crashed. Just a theory, but it would explain why most 'Higher end' cars from that time period have more miles than any other generation of cars.

From how the rust was it seems it was just in a area that had a lot of water/ snow but was never actually driven in salty conditions. Why the frame is rusted but not the common trouble spots. That vehicle sat a lot. I will say also why the hood was rusted where it was could be from a previous owner salting their driveway or something like that and opening the hood after on a daily basis.
