This REBUILT City In Guatemala Is Absolutely BREATHTAKING
They rebuilt this city in Guatemala and it’s stunning. Everything is brand new, and it's not just the architecture that's impressive. It might even make us reconsider how we should build cities. The name of this city is Cayalá.
Try taking a stroll around much of Guatemala City and you’ll quickly realize; it's a pedestrian's nightmare. Motorcycles race down busy sidewalks. Guards wielding rifles gaze at passers-by, assessing potential threats. Buses blowing smoke through stop signs. However, nestled within the turbulent capital's crazy-quilt sprawl, there is a dreamy refuge where none of this occurs. Cayalá, which roughly translates as "paradise", embodies this reality.

@@Quetzal0te I live in Guatemala City, I’m telling you the crime is high. People get robbed even in their cars while in the streets! A little "supremacist" to imply Guatemalans are not free to choose their own progress or status in life (or vote democratically) Southern California is more segregated, inequality more extreme, with higher poverty, crime, disorder, lawlessnes and homeless than Guatemala city and all of Guatemala. Guatemalans didn't defeat Comunism in the longest Civil War because they didn't believe in freedom of opportunity (not of outcomes) or because they rejected progess or hated wealth, art, success and beauty. The Mayans (gutemalans grandparents) had grandiose architecture, thousands of beautiful grand buildings and infrastructure and were wealthier than europe at their classic hights. Indeed, Guatemala has the largest economy in all of central america, number 9 in all of Latin America and Guatemala city is the wealthiest, largest, greenest, most cultural and cosmopolitan between Mexico City and Bogota colombia. ✌️ #GuatemalaCity 🇬🇹

One time I got lost driving in Bronx and I was so scared to see how a lot of guys were surrounding a fire lit in a cyilinder and they just turned to see us as we passed by with their I-wanna-kill-you face looking directly at us so don't come to me with that bull$h17 and try to make it look like is all heaven and candy in the sky all accross the US (not America, US) is not true, and you haven't even been here so making a judgment for a place you don't know or were told about for another person who hasn't been here either it seems to me like you have no intelligence or personality and live on others' review to make yourself look like you know something about it! hahaha don't make me laugh if you get rolled over is because the idiot is you not the driver, as opposite in the US, senior citizens or just stupid people who run into a bussines by crossing the side walk immediately after just starting the engine hahahaha how stupid is that? dumb a$$3$ all people who thinks like you.

I would recommend, as a Guatemalan myself, that people stop considering "Cayalá" a city. Or even a functional part of our society. Upscale shops that close due to soaring rent, paint a bleak picture of what goes underneath. This is a simulacrum of a neighborhood. A sore that causes an insane amount of traffic and a disfunctional neighborhood made for foreigners and nationals that cling desperately to any sort of foreign heritage. No one "lives" in Cayalá. No one "stays" longer than needed for a movie and maybe a meal. I've spent one eight of the minimum wage in there, for a few slices of pizza and glasses of soda. It's insane. Not only this, but it's an infamous area for enforcing the conservative, evangelical views of the upper echelons of Guatemalan society. We've had cases of people being thrown out, merely because they held their partner's hand in public, as an act of blatant homophobia. So, I beg you to reconsider. This isn't an "ideal". It isn't even something that I, as someone living a scant few minutes away from this glorified mall, can even identify with.

As a Guatemalan, I hate Cayala. It’s not because of the concept or the luxury. I have no quarrels with that. It’s a distasteful monument to ostentaciousness, and it’s poorly executed. Yes, it is visually striking, specially in a third-world country. But it is awful, and your comment that no architect would find any faults with it are absolutely false. There are many interesting things in the concept of Cayala, specially the development of open spaces that are accessible to everyone (no such thing usually exists in Guatemala City), but the execution is horrendous. Also, although technically correct that the residences are “over 70% of what the average Guatemalan makes in a year” is true, it’s also not descriptive. If I’m not mistaken, a house tends to be about USD1M and an apartment about USD700k. The average Guatemalan might go a lifetime without making that kind of money, and if you look at it in terms of rent, the average salary in the city is still below the average monthly rent price. Also, this area was originally a forest. Yes, it was private land, but it was converted to a huge slab of concrete, so not only is that an insult to the environment, it also means that it is scorching hot when you are there during the summer. All of this long winded comment can be summarized in stating that I hate Cayala for what it is, not what it wanted to be.

The most recurrent comment that I have read about Cayala is that when you get there it gives you a sense of missing autenticity that you can feel in the Disney World amusement parks. The médium quality of construction probably adds some of that same feeling of fakeness or pretention. For it to be gated actually goes against the arquitectural concept expressed by the original creator. Like having a wild animal in a zoo and pretend to be protecting it. It can't be catalogued as a city, it is more like a large neighborhood invaded by the new rich snob culture that can't see the difference between a faccade and authentic architecture. The owners belongs to the old and tradicional most wealthy families of Guatemala but the local architects that build it lack the taste and class to give it the touch of excellence that such immense investment was expecting to achieve.

@@UrbanCityExplorer_ unfortunately you should go to Guatemala 🇬🇹 in person first then you can criticize, plus you don’t even know that there are more zones for example zone 4,9,10,13,14,15,16 with rich people too. You are following articles from people who write ✍️ without even look 👀 their own countries that those countries are worse than Guatemala 🇬🇹 you are poor guy with small brain 🧠.

Urban city, si ciudad de guatemala tiene una muy alta taza de criminalidad, pero no, cayala es artificial, "caquera", opulenta, es un centro comercial enorme, carísimo y sobrevalorado

This is accessible to ALL !!! Anyone can enter Cayalá. Stop spreading missinformation and half-truths. Places like Detroit and many more in the USA could really learn a lot from Guatemala.
