Good video, it's lucky the motor wasn't ruined. I've seen several blown up because of this. My friend gave me one because he was tired of tripping over it in his shop. I sold parts off it for $150.😊 It had a hole in the block, scored cylinder, broken balancer and camshaft. The overhead valve single cylinder motors can be like rolling dice sometimes. Also the fuel solenoid will stick or corrode and cause a meltdown. Another reason to check your oil alot!

I had gas getting into the oil on a 2007 Craftsman 46" deck with a Briggs single-cylinder 20HP after a neighbor tried to help me with the carburetor for hard starting. He took it off and apart to inspect it and found an internal gasket had been "repaired" with RTV because it was torn, but he lost some internal parts in the grass in the process and we couldn't find them (and his re-RTV "fix" didn't work, either). Now I know to only disassemble a carb over a workbench. DOH!!! Rather than buying carb rebuild kit, because couldn't know where all the replacement parts went without all the internal parts, I bought the crazy expensive Nikki replacement Briggs OEM Upgrade carb in the engine manual ($170 USD). While I was at it, I checked compression and it was low, so I lapped the valves, with the help of your videos (Thank you!). It ran like a beast for the remaining mowing season last year, but now it's burning oil (or something). I don't see smoke, so it's going somewhere, and it's fouling the spark plug. I'll check compression again and check the valve gaps if it's low, but if not, that means replacing the rings. After reassembling from lapping the valves last year, one valve guides got stuck higher than normal on one side and I could not budge it either way, so I guess that could be an issue to check for now, too. It's always something with these tractor mowers. I am hemorrhaging money just to mow the lawn. I cannot tell you how many parts have been replaced on the effing tractor mower overall, and now I have to do more. It may be cheaper to do the work myself, but when will it end? After this work, I will have replaced everything I can imagine could be an issue on the deck and the engine, so hopefully it will end soon. Thanks for everything you do for us, Don! 👍👍

I had a Troy Bilt Pony with a Briggs engine given to me several years ago for parts. I was told that the engine was locked up, but it was just building too much compression. I did a valve adjustment, and it fired up and ran great. It would have been a free repair if I hadn't started parting it out before I checked it. I learned a valuable lesson. I spent a little bit of money and got a good mower out of the deal.

I had a similar problem a few weeks ago with my brush cutter. If I left the gas open while the engine was off it would fill the cylinder (engine is "upsise down"). Adding insult to injury, it's an old machine (34 years and still going strong) so its carburettor is quite old style. So much so it has a port designed, the mechanic said, to spill fuel if the machine was not in its supoosed upwards position. In this case, the needle wouldn't close the hole and, well... ir would let fuel go everywhere. The needle was worn out and no wonder I noticed I was using way more fuel than I usually did. One needle and tuning later it's working like a charm.

Love my 15HP Kohler Command. I added a fuel shutoff to it years ago when it seemed that the solenoid quit working and I priced a new solenoid. Never had an issue with mine leaking gas through to the crankcase though. I have had several customers with Briggs do that and get hydrolocked though.

In my opinion, this specific series / model of Kohler engine is bulletproof. My grandfather bought one one these tractors new in the 1990s with a 16.5HP Kohler in it (same engine, just slightly less output than the one shown here) and he put many, many, many hours on it mowing his one acre property until he passed away a few years ago. That tractor was still running and mowing perfectly when it was sold, and it never gave him trouble during the 20+ years of ownership.
@demetriosa76464 ай бұрын
I have the same Kohler command motor but 18hp. I bought it in 2004 and the engine purs. The only 1 things that this motor is flawed is that the lifters can tick at start up. Sometimes it will go away upon warm up but mines wasn’t. You have to take of the head to get to the lifters. My head was in great shape for 20yrs use. Motor is back together and continues to Purr!
@AtomicFallout7574 ай бұрын
@demetriosa7646 My grandfather's machine had the same issue for many years, but it would usually go away after it warmed up. Shortly after he bought the tractor in the 1990s, he had a service tech from Sears come out to look at it because of that problem, but the Sears guy said he was using too thick of oil (15W-40) when he should have been using 10W-30. I do not know if he ever started using a thinner oil or not, but it continued to run great for many years.

It’s always a good idea to put a fuel shutoff valve on your machine. It’s handy to have when changing out fuel filters or when you need to remove the fuel line from the carb not to mention the fuel flooding the crankcase issue. Great video!!!

Don, My 1996 Craftsman lawn tractor with Briggs 28N707 (2nd engine since 2005) would do that and hydrolock. I rebuild the carb several times to no avail so I installed a fuel shutoff between tank and carb and run the bowl dry each time I finish using the machine. That was about 15 years ago and the machine still runs great. Paul (in MA USA)

The original carburetor had a case grounded solenoid (one wire from harness) for the anti-backfire function, hence it needed to have that carburetor to engine ground strap wire. The new one uses the ground insulated solenoid (two wire from harness), but as it's replaces the one wire type, they include the conversion plug, of which you attach the one ground lead to the engine. The reason the one wire system needed the ground wire is because even though the metal carburetor is mounted on the two metal studs, the carburetor itself is insulated being sandwiched between the intake gasket and the plastic air box, so it is possible for the carburetor to position it's self on the two studs so there is no metal to metal contact, thus not a good ground. Not good ground would mean the solenoid would have restricted or no path to ground, so it wouldn't work reliable or at all. The main design flaw that causes the "engine floods with fuel when the float sticks open" is that it's a gravity feed fuel system and the height of the bowl vent (where overflow gas would vent out of and where air can be allowed in to equalize the pressure inside of the bowl) inside of the carburetor main orifice and the air intake is higher than the intake port, which lets fuel level overflow drain into the intake port. It's worse on the Briggs engines as the intake port is lower than the carburetor main orifice of which is lower than the air intake. The fuel is just flowing all downhill, which is into the engine. The non-gravity feed or fuel pump types almost never have this issue, nor the engines that have the air intake lower than the carburetor main orifice and have the carburetor main orifice lower than the intake port. So, the fuel shut off is a best solution to prevent damage due to a stuck float. And for everyone else, if you are going to use your tractor, check the gas first. If the tank is empty, but it was full last you used it, DO NOT TRY TO START THE ENGINE! .... Take it to donyboy73's shop right-away! 😁

Had this happen as a result of a bad coil. One cylinder was firing. The other was not. Over time, gas built up in the sump. Which also raised the oil level. Changed the bad coil. Then, like you, changed the oil & filter. Runs so much better now. But the owner, did use it for some time. Before we made the repair. Hopefully no internal damage was done.

Awesome instructional video, to help those who are just learning mechanics Dony! I 100% agree with your methodology, as I utilize the some methods as well, in my mechanics shop. But I gotta say, if I lived in a 1-million dollar home, I could easily afford a 14,000 dollar top of the line diesel powered Kubota tractor, or an John Deere X700 series diesel tractor, to do all my mowing. But we often find that rich folks will over-spend on their cars, buying Bugatti's, Ferrari's, Lamborghini's, etc, but spend the least amount possible, on their lawn equipment. I know, try to figure that out lol. Loved your video!

Recently I bought an old but pretty perfect condition Yard Machine RL 638 with Tecumseh-engine. Of course as an old biker the first of all I checked valves, put a new plug, new air filter, and oils. But after that when I tried to start, engine rotates but not run! Then plug off, and check the spark, and no spark! What the heck? And with an old plug, no spark. Then I checked the coil with multimeter, but it was OK. All wires as well seemed to be OK. Then I figured, that must be ignition lock and spraying CCR. Then I removed the lock and checked it with key, and then I find it what might be the problem! Delta branded key goes to the lock in both ways, but the groove of the key must be to the right side. If wrong side, engine turns, but no spark!

A broken camshaft decompression mechanism is also another cause of the engine being hard to crank over on startup. The Briggs Intek in grandfather John Deere ride on lawnmower was blown according to the mower mechanic who was going to just replace the camshaft in the engine after he burned out the starter motor. It was my uncles lawnmower which he gave to my grandfather only about 8 years after he bought it brand new & I don't think that they ever got it serviced. Oh, in 2010 my uncle bought it because with his previous mower to that, the ignition coil went in it & he gave up after he replaced the spark plugs,he gave it to my grandfather who just replaced the coil & sold the mower. I don't seem to get that sort of Desjardins in my family !

I am working on a Snapper Ninja push mower with a Honda GCV160. This machine sat outdoors for several years without an airbox before it was given to me to work on. Despite replacing every component of the fuel system (except the tank) with OEM parts, the engine will only run well fully choked or on the highest speed setting. I have replaced the air box, air filter, carburetor, all gaskets, choke lever, fuel lines, and gas cap. I have also replaced the spark plug and cleaned the connection points on the coil and flywheel. I have also checked the valve clearances, and they are good. What could I be missing? This machine will also lose all of it's fuel if you let it sit without shutting the fuel off. It has done this with two carburetors, and I am finding no evidence of gas leaks or fuel in the oil. I can't figure it out. I have been working on this machine for over a year, and I am ready to be done with it.

It's not if but when this cost saving measure bites you in the butt.
