Hedwig is... Complicated. She's kinda meant to be a deconstruction of gender and her male and female self are seen as two separate sides of her that must come together for her to find happiness. Its basically a statement that masculine and feminine are two parts of a person and should not be in conflict. Hedwig has been played by anyone of any gender, including cisgender women, in various adaptations of the stage play. So yeah gender with hedwig is complicated. I have not seen Riverdale but it looks like all that complexity went right out the window.
