About angelica celebrating at the end, it was very consistent with her character. She never had an "arc". She was evil like vicky. And it was kinda realistic becuase she's 3. Doesn't know the gravity of rhe situations but is happy her life isnt gonna change like she thought. Its not like she's celebrating a miscarriage or anything.

I think something that always stands out to me about this episode is that Angelica’s parents never tried for another child. I’m pretty sure with her parents being so career driven they weren’t trying in this episode but they still got so excited. So they must have been so heartbroken and disappointed at the end. And I feel like Charlotte especially really threw herself more into her work after this. Rugrats really hits different watching it as an adult

There was a later episode when Angelica realized that she was the only one without a sibling. Tommy Had Dill, There Phil and Lil and Chuckie and Kimmi. She asked for a baby and her parents were awkward about it and said no. She then tried to make one of the babies her younger sibling.

It gets sadder when you consider that: This is Angelica's mom, a woman completely dedicated to her career. The fact she was happy and excited and sharing the news immediately after a home test means that she really wanted a baby, they were probably actively trying for one judging from both of their reactions to the news, and chances are they continued trying afterwards. But we already know that never happened, Angelica never got a sibling.

I can sympathize with Tommy, even though I am more like Chuckie and he is my favorite. They both don't have a bad bone inside despite how the world is. I think deep down inside Tommy knows that Angelica does what she does, because she needs to validate her own self worth and important existence. Many bullies have that. They need to feel better about themselves so they pick on others, especially the weaker members of society and those who challenge their values of themselves and their core beliefs. I actually feel pity for them, especially those who have the need to pick on the disable (mild, moderate or sever; doesn't matter). 😔

@@LadyCoyKoi I am like Chuckie and he's my favorite, too. The Mothers Day episode really resonates with me because my...I'll call it my parental situation was EXTREMELY similar to Chuckie's, minus Dad remarrying and a daughter/sister joining the family. I try to keep in mind this is a kids' show about a group of babies the oldest of whom is 3 years, but I do think sometimes the writers did decide to make it more in-depth and, sometimes, darker. Even when I was a kid, I always got this feeling something was "off" about Rugrats. Tommy could've totally sympathized with Angelica because he realizes her parents don't pay much attention to her and realized her bullying may very well have been out of jealousy that he and the other babies have loving parents. Maybe not always *present* parents, but they don't seem to totally ignore their children like Drew/Charlotte ignores Angelica. And because Tommy is generally a good person, even if a very, very young person. :)
@Terestrasz
@Terestrasz 3 жыл бұрын
Same thing for Angelica - there are instances where she shows she really does care for the babies. Like that one episode where she comes to their defence against a bully, or whenever the subject of Chuckie's mom comes up. I remember seeing one comic where Chuckie is standing on a crack, Angelica asks waht he's doing. Chuckie says "Step on a crack, bring your mother back". Angelica's about to say "That's not how it goes", before going "oh!" then looking up with Chuckie asking "See anything yet?"

Angelica's older than they are. To Tommy, she might as well be the boss - even though he knows she can get very overbearing and unappreciative. However, when Angelica tells Tommy her hypothetical, I think on some subconscious level (but in a naive enough way to where we can reasonable believe it's from Tommy, who would later have to deal with another sibling in the house) Tommy realizes that Angelica's whole facade of "princess around the adults, brat around the kids" is starting to break, that maybe Angelica actually has humanity instead of just being the old baby.

I think the last few seconds show growth in Angelica that’s still realistic. Like a kid, she is truly relieved to be the only child, but has now realized that her selfishness doesn’t need to be shared. Instead of telling her parents in a spoiled manner that she’s happy about this like Angelica at the beginning of the episode would have, she knows they’re sad about this so she lets them grieve on their own, gives what comfort she can, and doesn’t make it about herself.

Dude, when I was a kid, this episode really hit home for me especially when my mother was pregnant with my brother. And now, as an adult, I witnessed that with my 3 year old niece during my sister's pregnancy with my nephew. My sister, who works in early childhood education explained to me that she would grow out of it being that all kids her age and those that are becoming older siblings experience some sort of separation anxiety. My niece is still going through it even though my nephew is was born 3 months ago. Me, my sister, and my brother-in-law always remind her that we love her and will always be there for her. On the bright side, my niece is a fantastic big sister. She's always helpful with around her parents and she is extremely protective of her baby brother.

My parents would tell me how before they had my younger sister, I would basically try to stop them from conceiving her (funniest thing is I had to be like 8 months old or possibly a few months younger at that time if what they said was anything to go by.) They said when they broke the news that I was going to be a big brother, I didn't have an over the top reaction either about how I excited I was about becoming one or how upset that I wasn't their only kid anymore. I apparently had a very reserved reaction. Something along the lines of "I'll accept this will happen, but it doesn't mean I have to like it." When she was born, my Mom told me that I went up to one of the doctors and asked them to let me and my family take my sister home so that my Mom could rest at the hospital.

I guarded my little sis like a yard dog at times. Most of my frustrations and angers are towards myself and the world. The full time job I wanted was more for protecting my sister. Her leukemia did a number on her memory, so she forgets easily. She has a hard time paying her rent (so that money is used to pay the other half of the bills) and she is with me, the horrors that could occur if she forgets to pay her rent with a stranger. 😱With a full time job, I would be able to do more and no one would have to worry. 😎👍

I know this sounds twisted to say, but I think at Angelica's age, I can slightly understand why she would react the way she did. Having the spotlight from your parents taken away from you is a very real thing. You fear the neglect. You fear that you're going to be treated as less than nothing, which was exemplified throughout the entire episode. She was happy that she wouldn't have to deal with those things because she didn't want to ultimately lose what she constantly craves, the affirmations of her parents. She doesn't want to have to deal with the possibility of being neglected. I, as an older brother was basically emotionally neglected and treated a lot worse than my younger brother. Simply because my parents "didn't know how to parent" and also "because I was autistic". The poor treatment didn't stop even after I became a high schooler when I was basically able to think for myself. They would still either neglect me emotionally, dismissing all my problems as "something everyone your age goes through" and "I shouldn't worry about it", and to "stop being so dramatic". But when my brother reached that age, suddenly they started caring. They made me record his high school graduation while mine went completely undocumented in every way. No videos, no graduation pictures, no nothing. Just "Okay, time to go back home." and that was the last time I saw a majority of my friends in high school. I never even got into the school's yearbook because of a horrible mix-up. But that's another story. So yeah, fear of neglect is real. I understand some people might think that there was no reason Angelica should have acted that way, especially since losing a baby due to complications or a failed home test, but when you genuinely fear losing the unconditional love that your parents are supposed to give you, it makes you feel good, for lack of a better way to phrase it. That and she's also 3, and she doesn't have the emotional complexity to understand botched pregnancy tests, miscarriages or even death, for that matter. All she knows is that she lives another day with the unconditional love and the life that her parents give her.

Great video. Missed point for me: that baby is totally face-swapped Tommy. Angelica is not imagining a new danger. She's already had to relinquish her baby status. Her antagonistic attitude to Tommy and his peers is based on this. Her code-switching (which you clocked wonderfully) is based on this. She's totally imagining another Tommy, closer to home. It's a beautiful, childish, dream-logic expression of an anxiety that she may not understand herself. But that's some goodass character writing and animation synergy. What a great show!

Of course they're acting like they're a bit older.... Tommy, Phil & Lil are "1" and can perfectly converse (with each other) & Angelica & Susie are "3" but are like 90% well conversed with adults. We just accept that as what the show is despite being impossible; we're just simply saying there are always inside jokes in shows like this.

@@robertcliff3197 I think they sound older to us because it’s from the kid’s perspectives. 3 is old enough to talk, hence the 3 year olds can communicate with the adults but not the babies. The last few seconds capture the feelings perfectly. Angelica buried the fear and anger of having a new baby around and was forced to move on by forcing her emotions aside and acting like everything was okay. She put up a front because she knew it had to be accepted. She never wanted a sibling but as reality set in she forced herself to accept the fate and acted like she was okay with it even though deep down she was still pissed off and hurt. Finding out she wasn't having a sibling after all unsuppressed all those feelings and lifted the weight off her conscience. Much like a burden that's been lifted.

Rugrats is highly underrated as a toon with a lot of psychological and sociological topics that needs to be discussed, especially those who have kids now. I felt the parents throughout that episode were being selfish to not understand that Angelica has always been their only child up to that point, given everything and all attention then suddeningly this new baby thing happens and they never validate or brought up any concerns that their current daughter has or will have over this change. She is basically treated as another object in the house, like some status symbol pet of sorts. Yes, there are people out there that use children for validating their own self importance and existence overshadowing the emotional and psychological needs of the children (those of us who work in the education system have enough of these stories that would crash the whole KZbin system if we had videos of said stories). Angelicas' parents seem to be that. Pretty depressing. I was a teen when I started to watch Rugrats and I always felt sorry for Angelica. Her parents never really gave her real valid support in the emotional and psychological development department that was healthy. She is basically treated like a prized pure-breed dog. 😔

All of it is so distressing just think back on it & I love Rugrats. I'm currently 34 1/2 & Rugrats is still 1 of my most-favorite cartoon shows I've ever seen. The first time I watched this review, I shut my eyes before the car eating part came up, but I had to force myself to watch. I said to myself "No, you have to face your fear." I still hate it, really really hate it. The "I'm not Stu" nightmare episode also is fucked. I get chills just remembering them. I appreciate you covering this. About the scene from the Rugrats Movie, Tommy NEVER tried to kill Dill. He wanted the monkeys to take Dill away. Also, I myself never feared the idea of being neglected when my little sister was born. My parents told me about the possibility of having a sibling and made it clear they wouldn't neglect me or that they loved the (then-hypothetical) child more. And when my sister was born, we were close from Day 1. From an early age to even now, she's like my best friend.

I'm pretty glad that I don't remember much about when my little sister was born since I was about 2.5 years old, but my dad has a home video of my mom being home from the hospital for the first time and him asking me, "What do you think of your new baby sister?" My reaction can be summed up as the little blonde girl's awkward face meme video, and unfortunately, nothing has changed over the past 20+ years. We have never been close and are not close now. We're two different people, so my natural feeling is wishing I could have had a brother or remained a single child instead, but I digress.
