The Rugrats 2021 Reboot is STRANGE...

After all of the hype about a reboot for the Rugrats, it's finally here with its first 5 episode on Paramount Plus. So as a huge Rugrats fan, as if you couldn't tell by the previous few Rugrats related videos, I have been both excited and nervous about how this reboot would turn out... so let's talk about the new 2021 reboot of the Rugrats!

Phil and Lil's VA is literally the same as their Mother too, so even if it was something like, all the Adult's VA's just didn't want to come back for some reason, they definitely had Phil and Lil's Mother's VA, and yet they still didn't have her voice her.

Rebooting Rugrats is honestly a bigger challenge than rebooting just about any Nicktoon. The animation is really going to take some getting used to for me, though I do appreciate the emotion in their faces. But 3D makes things more "real" somehow―Rugrats is super abstract in a lot of ways, and it feels like this animation style actively fights that. I'm also a bit worried about Flanderization going forward. Ultimately I guess I'll have to give this a shot. Unlike Kamp Koral, which I intend to never watch out of principle (and the reaching hope that its numbers suck enough not to continue for long)

This whole lie the industry perpetuates that 3D is inherently superior is just done to cut costs as 3D is so much cheaper. 2d animation has the best potential for portraying abstract ideas because it’s not limited by anything but the ability to draw what you want people to see so if your a good artist it’s the ultimate storytelling vehicle

@Logia SD When the Rugrats were first pitched at Nick the execs thought all the babies looked ugly and the creative director responded "Yes I love that. That's what I want" it was a stylistic choice to be off putting but I could see how they may not be the word you would use.

The problem is most of the new voices don't sound good tbh. They don't actually seem like professionals which is a major problem in my opinion. I think the biggest issue with 3D is the awful character designs for the adults. Didi's face in particular is hideous and barely resembles her original design.

When I saw the trailer with just Chuckie and Angelica doing their thing, it looked fine. But when I watched the first 5 episodes, I can't shake the feeling that it looks like the Grub Hub ad. Tommy has these flat white eyes pasted on his 3d bald head. However, in this video, there were scenes played in a much lower frame rate and it looked like claymation. Maybe they should lower the frame rate so it doesn't look so clean. The original was deliberately made rough.

Best part is that will be an easy fix for the Internet to do. Also add a filter to slightly grain up the footage and audio and I'd bet it would make up for the lack of outlines

Honestly of all the adults voices Stu is the only one that immediately clicked with me, it felt true to Jack Riley’s performance without just being a bad impression, maybe because I didn’t realize ahead of time every adult was getting recast so I didn’t think to prepare for their voices to be different.

It was just boring. But the grandpa’s voice was too jarring. I didn’t last 15 minutes. Whatever magic the original had did not carry over to the reboot. It definitely wasn’t like the original three seasons. Maybe it was more like the newer seasons. I didn’t watch them because they weren’t the same.

I don’t know why they thought it was a good idea to lean into the 2021 angle. If they were gonna do that they should have just done another installment of all grown up where they’re late 20s adults (maybe not all of them have kids because that would show a pretty cool generation gap). Or they could do a Brady bunch movie sort of deal. Makes me sad to think about spike being dead though, he’s a lowkey amazing addition to the show . But other than that it’s weird because Rugrats doesn’t constantly reference the 90s.

She was an example of how 90's kids dealt with their own problems by standing up to bullies. At the same time she was also Angelica's best friend. This new Susie is just the token black baby. She doesn't say anything funny, she doesn't do anything interesting. She's just the token black baby now that doesn't do anything other than being black.

The time period shift is kind of strange. The parents are presumably in their 30s. In the original 90s show that would place their births in the 1960s so gen X. Grandpa would have been born in the 1940s so a boomer. I do believe Grandpa served in Vietnam. These are vital life experiences to the parent characters and their parenting styles. Now the parents would be millennials born in the 80s. That's a completely different show.

As someone who works in childcare, them learning a lesson one say and having the lesson not follow into the new episodes is the most accurate thing about this show when it comes to the relationship of babies. 😂 They tend to stick with the "New day, new me" trope lol. They don't remember what they did the day before, and that's why the Rugrats relationships worked so well, every day was a new day.

It would justify the time period at least. If the kids were around teen years during AGU (around 2000), they would be in there late 30s early 40s by this time (2021-ish). I would love to see that. It would make it easier to justify new voice actors for the adults, maybe even the parents and justification as to why their characters change. All and all, I would've much preferred something like that. In addition, I never really got the whole "Introduce it to a new generation". The old version still exists and in most cases, they may go back to the old version; so what's the point?

I don't know if its the 3D or the angles drawn in 2D back then, but the house and yard seem smaller. Not a point against it, its just something I noticed as the original always seemed to make everything larger and warped, I think to match the babies worldview

Probably the angles. Back then, to do wide shots, they'd have to draw the background or scene warped to give the impression of 3D movement. This tends to add a fish eye lens effect, which warps things to look a bit bigger

Although my love for this country is very high, I do believe that Vietnam was an atrocity, a big black mark on America's record for messed up stuff we have done. But you have to remember that it was almost all political driven and alot of the soldiers were forced to fight because of the draft. WW2 on the other hand is a different story because it America hadn't helped the allied forced fight the Nazis we'd be speaking German right now. We had to fight in WW2 of else when the Nazis beat the allied forces they would have immediately attacked us and demolished America. Would be awesome if Tommy and Kimi got married and had a daughter, Chuckie married someone and has a girl of his own, similar personalities or not. Angelica could have a kid who's quite the opposite of their mother at that age, and so on. Stuff like that would be cool. Get to have new characters and old ones return in different ways.

We could even check in with the parents during these times and see them as empty nesters and how their lives have changed. Doubtful, Nick seems pretty adamant about going full CGI now. I’m assuming the current executives are the type that feels 2D animated stuff doesn’t sell anymore....despite the fact they are making bank showing reruns of their older classic shows/merchandise of said shows....and those recent one off specials of 3 of those shows (which included Hey Arnold) did well too.

I saw a recent article come out that they’re going to make Phil and lil’s mom a lesbian and that’s why her husband isn’t any episodes. I think the idea to make one of the parents LGBTQ+ is fine but to me it feels like they’re reinforcing the stereotype that a masculine woman can’t be attracted to men.

I grew up with the old version of Rugrats and watching this, doesn't upset me like most reboots do. It does change a lot from what it is and was, but if you think about it as if you are a kid who had never seen the old one, you're going to probably enjoy this version a little bit better than if you have seen the old one first. The old one has its charm, but the new one has charm too. we just have to look at as, who's the target demographic for what's being shown? Rugrats wasn’t made for the adults but made for the kids up the adults that grew up watching Rugrats. So do I say that this reboot is bad, no. Does it change a lot from what I like from the original, heck yeah. does the new one have a leg to stand on? And the answer is, only if it's done correctly like these few episodes sort of do. So I will always love the original, but I can appreciate how they're trying to bring the show to a newer audience with references that they get.

Something about the style (not the animation) is really throwing me. I know they've tried their best to translate the Klasky-Csupo style but......... :/ I'll say it looks better on some characters than others; Chuckie for example looks pretty good because he has a lot of angles to offset the weird smoothness everything else has. But Angelica's eyes look downright manic. 😂

Bet one of their imaginary adventures is them imagining if they grew up with their parents or something, and it would have a moral or something about Nostalgia can make you feel good, but can get you stuck in the past and pushing stuff on kids they may not like (B Plot being Stu finding an old video of his childhood and watching it with Tommy, then noticing he was playing an old game in it and he spends the episode trying to find that game to play it again, only to get it and realize it sucks and he was pushing Tommy to like stuff he liked)

I'm all for LGBTQ representation but I hate when shows/ properties have preexisting lore and characters that get removed or completely changed just for the sake of trying to be modern. Howard, Phil and lils dad, doesn't exist in this reboot because they've made Betty lesbian. If you want to have a LGBTQ character then create one with a unique backstory or character. Don't just rewrite an existing character to check off a box.

Betty was a tomboy, but that wasn’t because she was a lesbian. Both Betty and Howard were characters that simply broke gender stereotypes. As a tomboy myself, it makes me a bit uncomfortable that they’re pushing the stereotype that because you’re a woman who likes man-ish things, that means you’re a lesbian. Have no problem with them making new characters, but regardless of whether you’re the creator or not, it’s not okay to change the way a character has been established to be.

I do have to wonder why they completely changed Lou's character, to the point where he doesn't even feel like the same person, but I guess they didn't want to play into the "crotchety old man" stereotype? Personally, I feel the show is passable though still sorta on the meh side with the occasional good moment or laugh. My one major complaint: It seems like they made Suzie super passive, at least in the first couple eps. Like, they had that whole thing where Angelica is telling Chuckie that he's gonna be a worm boy, and Suzie barely confronts or argues with her - and she doesn't even try to comfort Chuckie. Instead of that Nice older kid VS Mean older kid dynamic, it feels like they made Suzie a minor character that just kinda refers to Tommy, like she's the same age as Chuckie instead of the same age as Angelica. Granted it's been a while since I've seen the old show, so maybe I'm misremembering, but I feel like Suzie should have a stronger character than just "nice girl".

Here is what I think they should have done. They should have introduced the new babies to almost looks like the original Rugrats, just with different/altered names. So here is what I'm thinking Tommy + Kimi have their son, Timmy (looks mostly like baby Tommy but half Japanese). Chucky + Angelica have their son, Chucky Jr (looks mostly like baby Chucky) and older sister Cynthia (looks mostly like toddler Angelica). Phil and Suzie have their son Bill (looks likely like baby Phil but half black). Lil and Dyl have their daughter Jill (looks mostly like baby Lil). Tommy falls in his dad's inventor footsteps and Dyl ends up a lot like Drew as the straight laced guy. Angelica ends up a lot like her mom as a CEO of a toy company (maybe) while Chucky is a stay at home dad. Nods to the first series by having the grandparents make cameos, but not much beyond that.

I'm glad they've realised that was a homophobic instinct and hey, if you're going to do a reboot why not change some of the characters? More representation is better than no representation. It helps normalize the fact that, yes, gay single parents are a thing. And let's face it, Howard was a nothing character. I don't remember a thing about him! His wiki article describes him as Betty's husband an unemployed. Not exactly a fan favourite.

I actually like the textures and lighting. The models almost feel toy like. Which I feel fits the mood of the show if it was 3D. I also like how they have subdued textures in the hair, felt cloth, and textures walls. It is a nice flourish to add to the 3D aspect of it. But it is not so loud, so it translates better with their cartoon counterparts. Also, they added very subtle additions that just feels right. Like Stubble feels like to adds to his dishovelled inventor look and Grandpa's glasses rims feel like 90's grandparent's glasses rims. It just feels right. The part that can throw me off is how 2D the eyes can look. Do not get me wrong, I actually like the painted on animation look 3D models. But it feels like the eyes should lens out just a littls bit and they are so matte. Feels like there is no life to them. I feel like they shouldn't go too crazy with it, but they should add a slight gloss to it. That balloon for instance was way too glossy. Felt almost wet.

As someone who watched reruns of this show and was around when the show was not quite dead yet (1995), I prefer the seasons with Dil and AGU than this, especially in light of Betty not being married to Howard anymore - ...because in trading another weird stereotype we had (brash, loud woman who clearly sounds and acts unfeminine was seen as a "bulldyke" and often ignored - Howard marrying her was commendable back then because of it) we replaced that with "all women who act like Betty *must be gay."* I was a tomboy in the mid-90s and liked Betty because she was relatable to me. By coincidence, I'm bisexual. These are not a correlation to each other, and it's annoying they jumped straight to "SHE'S GAY." because of how she looks. The show also just looks...off, somehow. Combined with the voices...yeah, I'm skipping this. Glad you like it, though!

It just doesn't make sense to me that they would remove him like that. Based on his personality I can't imagine him being an absent father even if they're divorced. I haven't seen the Rugrats reboot yet, but according to what I've read online supposedly the reason they got rid of Phil and Lil's dad was because they retconned their mom to now be a lesbian...for some reason. I'm conflicted about this. On the one hand, I have nothing against gay characters in kids' shows, but on the other hand, I feel the same way about recasting straight characters gay as I do with recasting male characters as women or white characters as POCs. That is to say I think it's a very lazy form of representation. Unless the original Rugrats was subtly implying Phil and Lil's mom was a closeted lesbian and I missed it, making her one now feels very much like they're doing it just to tick off a box for social brownie points. I'm all for more gay characters in kids' media if they're well written (e.g. Ruby and Sapphire), but I'm really starting to get sick of this recent trend of putting representation first and writing good characters second.

I think the thing that bothers me most is that Howard and Betty were both groundbreaking by being a hetero couple because neither conformed to prescribed gender roles. In the 90s a man like Howard and a woman like Betty would have always been steryotyped as being gay because of how they presented as a more masculine woman and a more feminine man. I liked that there was a difference between gender performance and sexuality shown. I feel that this change takes away from that and that makes me sad. Also, I loved Howard. He was a breath of fresh air because of his personality and hobbies. He clearly loved Betty and the twins. To be fair I am also miffed that they changed Randy's profession and that I have not seen Kimmy or Dill in any of the advertising. Nor am I a big fan of 3d animation. I do love Angelica playing with a dating app for Grandpa though. That is funny.

I don’t have Paramount+ yet, so this is kind of my intro to the show. It’s a shame they couldn’t get the original voice actors for the adult characters back, but I’m grateful that the kids VOs are here. I’ll check this out down the line whenever I do eventually get the streaming service, and I’m looking forward to it. It sounds like they put honest care it to keeping it true to the original source material while still updating it for a modern audience, which is really all that can be asked for when it comes to this sort of production.

For the 2021 reboot I personally just started showing it to my daughter and she’s all about it. I got tired of Disney princesses and Encanto so I gave it a shot and she loved it. It gives me something to watch that I grew up with and now I can watch that with her and we can bond like that. It reminds me of when I would watch scooby Doo with my dad, he had it when he was younger then I did. It’s great for us who have kids now that can use it to connect with them

I have a fear for reboots. I can’t handle the change and it feels if its forced to make something new and good since the first one was a hit. Tbh the animations scares me. 3D works for some shows and definitely when its used the first time like Jimmy neutron. But this a drastic change and idk if im ready for that. The Mother's Day episode is very special to me. It was always really sad to me because I could never imagine my life without my mother. We were best friends. My beautiful mother died in 2019 of kidney failure, she was only 51 years old. Way too young to go so now the Rugrats Mother's Day special means even more to me on a deeper level. I will never forget when Angelica was Chuckie's mom in the episode and named him Blaine I legitimately started crying in one of the newer episodes when they did an amazing call back to the Mother's Day special where Chuckie was Angelica's son again and she called him Blaine. I legitimately started crying. I love how you can tell that like you said the people working on this version of Rugrats truly love it because if you really pay attention you will notice subtle little call backs and things like that. I love it.

@BlackWorm I always thought 2D would be cheaper (At least in this era, where pretty much anyone can get a tablet and animate). Ray tracing graphics cards are expensive, and need to stay cool 24/7 xD I bet if they did go for the 2D approach, they would probably use Vector Graphics, which will still look off. I love both, anyways, cute characters are cute characters :D

I am a hardcore Rugrats fan and I couldn't even get through one episode of the new show. The only part I liked was Spike. At least it says in the title that it is only based on the original show. It's good that it's a reboot and not a continuation. Its clearly set in a different universe and has a different timeline. Which means it's not canon to the original universes timeline. Not to mention it's basically a what if the rugrats were babies in modern times.

The one that I didn't like was Susie's dads. In the original he was a writer for the dummi bears which was awesome. In the new one he's a science teacher.

I absolutely love this. I'm a 3D artist and it's so amazingly refreshing to see stylized 3D art being used in mainstream media again. It seems like every 3D industry these days goes the route of "I want this 3D animation to look so real that you can't even tell it's not" Seeing stylized art make a comeback is refreshing and inspiring for me to see.

I thought that the reboot is just okay. The fact that it’s premiere is on Paramount+ kinda makes the retreading of older ground way more noticeable. The streaming service has all 9 seasons of the original Rugrats, so people instantly have a source to compare it to

I haven’t seen the Reboot, but from screenshots it certainly looks strange, kinda cheap if I’m being honest, the artstyle of the original doesn’t transfer the best into 3D. The franchise declined in quality after the first movie, and both of its spin-offs were worse in my opinion. So I’m not particularly excited about eventually seeing this.

I hate that many kids nowadays don’t even know this masterpiece exists. I’m 12 and I discovered and fell in love with this show when I was 5, woke up, turned on tv, and BAM rugrats movie. I hope more kids fall in love with the series.
