That trick with adding the screw behind the hinge plate is brilliant!
@rogermccaslin5963Ай бұрын
I learned something similar from a carpenter friend of my brother many years ago. He just shot a nail in rather than a screw. I'm sure the nail holds just fine, but I like the screw even better. I'd still put a long screw through the hinge plate as that will firmly attach the hinge to the stud. Using both - belt and suspenders.
@cfomusic73Ай бұрын
I remodel homes a lot and I usually take my sawzall and cut out the prehung doors but I always check the center screw on each hinge because I start cutting..... So now if I have to remove all the hinges that sucks definitely not a good idea

Yeah it's sad that even fairly expensive interior doors can still be junk. Manufacturers need to be called out because it should be unacceptable but they get away with it more and more now days. Hopefully quality will make a comeback for people like us who take pride in our work but the way it looks I wouldn't hold my breath, unfortunately.

The price of these products does not generally reflect quality. The solid wood doors get the same jambs as the hollow core doors, and cardboard doors should reflect cardboard prices. Masenite is cardboard!

This is why I'm paranoid and prefer to do everything myself, if and when possible. Everything is scam. Everyone will sell you cheap junk at outrageous markups if you let them and it's exhausting having to vet each and every single thing you need/want :/ Most companies don't even bother with actually designing or testing stuff in the first place anyway. Paul saying ppl are thinking "what new things are we gonna learn", i learned something like 1 minute in on the first door with that lining up the inside miter to the saw fence, and I've been hanging doors for 20 years. Always had a hell of a time with short point to short point miters.

@rogermccaslin5963Ай бұрын
I'm not a pro but I've hung a few doors, made some picture frames and other things that require a mitered corner. I'm kind of crazy when it comes to accuracy. I've measured by holding the tape on the one inch mark at the short point and then working my way to the other end, always holding the tape tight to the wood, then making my cut mark. Then I measure a couple more times just to make sure I didn't slip while moving to the other end. And don't forget to add an inch back in or you'll cut off too much (Or so I've been told because I'd never make that mistake...I swear😁). Paul's simple tip could make life a lot easier.

There's a company called Conservation Technology which has a large assortment of door and window seals. I have used an assortment of their seals on my double-hung windows and the results were amazing! On the front door there was the original threshold which I didn't want to replace, but was very worn in the middle. They have a double seal unit that is adjustable to match the curves on the threshold. I did't have to use a draft sock anymore! And the bugs couldn't come into the house that way anymore.

Hey guys, remodel contractor here in Ottawa, Canada. For flush transitions from tile - usually 3/8" porcelain - to regular 3/4" hardwood flooring we use schluter Ditra or DitraXL (5/16" typical), a little extra mortar, and a trick afterwards. The trick? We use either a biscuit jointer set below the depth of the tile, or a router with a bearing and slot cutting bit to carve a groove into the hardwood. Then, we use a typical tile clip cut slightly short on one side to fit into the groove. It works well with LASH or LASH360. It lets us keep dead even flush transitions even in large hardwood to tile transitions with consistent spacing and very little lipping. If we have thinner flooring, reducing the thickness of the subfloor to 5/8" from 3/4" or bumping up the thin flooring area with an extra layer of 1/4" lets the layers come close enough for the trick to work again. Happy to chat further if more information is needed!

I've installed a few automatic door bottom Seal and the easiest way, I figure, is to rout out the grove in the bottom of the door using a full size hand router with edge guides on both sides of the door that you don't need to make. I have a Bosch 2.3 HP router and a Bosch edge guide that two edge guides can be mounted on the provided rails in the kit. If you attempt this install, don't cut any of the extra length of the rubber seal on the button side of the door drop until the door is installed. I cut what I thought was the right length before install and now I have a small gap you can see light through. These are great for bedroom doors to seal the door bottom from noise and light. Also used to seal the door to our media room for sound getting out. You can also use weather stripping around the rest of the door to completely seal. Automatic Door Bottom Seals can be found on Amazon for under $100.

I installed an adjustable door sweep with a circular saw. I put it into a workmate (clamping) sawhorse horizontally and then cut downward on the end. No ladder or router template needed. Used the sweep on a solidcore Masonite door for a bedroom in a mobile home. Insulated the bedroom walls with rockwool and it’s really quiet fromnoises from the outside and from the inside 😊

Great video as always guys !!! Trick I learned from my days as a member of a woodworkers guild back in the early 80s was when using glue on mitered corners, spread glue on both sides of the miter. use your finger to spread it into the end grain, wait till it sets up, maybe 10mins. Then put the final glue on and clamp. this gives it more bonding strength.

For your flooring transitions you can peel the vinyl layer off the SPC core of your flooring and glue it on a piece of wood/metal/plastic that is shaped the way you desire for a perfect match. Another great option is an extruded aluminum trim designed for LVT or even some metal "Schluter" (tile) trims will work. I am definitely a fan of the white oak threshold shown here, but not every floor is a straightforward color to stain match, or even emulates a common wood species.

Taking the doors off the hinges to install the frame is what I usually do. Makes it easier to get the frame level/plumb and then put the door back on for adjustments. I'm forever losing tools and other stuff. I'll be tripping over the tool one day but when I need it I can't find it. LOL. Cool trick for measuring miter ends! EZ door hanger kits at big box stores are inexpensive and can help if you don't want to use shims. We just installed an exterior door on Sunday but the framing was too far away on the sides so we had to use full on 2x4s and 1x4s as shims. That door is the only thing in this house that is level. LOL. Nice little recliner. I miss the big LazyBoy one my dad had with a little fridge in the arm. Unfortunately after a massive power surge it started to heat instead of cool. It was good while it lasted though. Wider chairs are more comfortable to me. Hey, if someone is in your chair and you want them out, you can grab the controls and use the lift to dump them out! :P Reminds me I need to get Mom's lift chair set up. $500 for a chair like that is not bad at all. The door we just installed was Masonite. It was actually done pretty well, although the steel on it is super thin (it's one of those foam core steel clad ones). If I were to make a door like that myself I would have sandwiched the foam in wood and then put the steel around it as extra reinforcement. Although, cutting that thing to put in a pet door was a royal pain. I just looked up those clam clamps. $70 just for one. Yikes. Ooh, that hidden door sweep is so cool! I was taking notes on door installs for the next time we install a door.
