I remember watching Shaolin movies as a child with my dad... And straight after the film trying to act out the awesomeness I just watched.. This is just amazing to see!

The tv series "kung Fu" in the 70's with David Caradine. But he didn't do anything like this. He was a Shaolin Priest in the old West. He didn't kick ass until the last 10 minutes of an hour show. Bruce Lee was cast for the series but the producers decided America was not ready for an Asian Super Star.

@@val.t7487 he’s talking about the founding legend of the Shaolin temple itself. A visiting Indian Buddhist monk saw a monastery of Chinese Buddhist monks being robbed and beaten by local bandits. The Indian monk then taught those Chinese monks his Indian martial arts so they can defend themselves. Legend has it that that evolved to became Shaolin Kung Fu.

You can go out of the temple and find your own glory and fame, by participating in a contest/show they can show off their hard work. A true Shaolin Monk has no need to show off his skills. Real Shaolin training is not for showing off in tv or competitions, it's for self development, balance, resilience, and DEFENSE only, not agression. Those are sacred, objective teachings. Thats why many of them keep training for their whole lives and still never get into a fight, because it's far from being merely physical.

I respect your morals but, unfortunately, that’s not how things are today. I’ve been practicing shaolin for 7 years under a master who later also became a monk, and I can assure you about the condition of most Chinese martial arts. Even in the temple in China, most disciples are trained to perform shows. The shows gather tourists who pay tickets, so the temple earns money. They need that money to promote shaolin culture and keep their art alive. Also, in most schools, even all around China, people don’t care much about the practical self-defense application of their techniques. They just focus on looking good and performing shows. A new martial art called sanshou/sanda has been created by the Chinese government, and many consider it to be “practically applied kung fu”, but that’s not completely true, because it simply looks like kickboxing with some extra moves. However, it’s much closer to what real kung fu should be, because it focuses on sparring and actual fighting instead of choreographed performances. What am I trying to say? *It’s almost impossible to find someone who teaches traditional kung fu in a practical way that works for self defense, even if you look all over China*

And yes, there surelly are monks and masters who live and teach the traditional ways of martial arts, they may be few but they do exist, it's obvious no need to explain that. Wing Chun was created for self-defense and is very effective, practical, it's all around the world, why the heck would It not be available in China? That's nonsense. Shaolin Monks were warriors, obviously they had very practical techniques for combat. "MARTIAL" derives from Mars, WAR, so all martial arts were originally developed for war, combat, they have a very practical Nature, that is to save one's life. Now the times are different of course and new techniques are constantly developed to improve self-defense, but that's not the point. I was talking about the essence of being a Shaolin Monk, a warrior monk.. someone who has both spiritual and physical training.

@@danielmar99able yeah but martial arts like Wing Chun don’t work in most cases because they’re not tested in live sparring. Warrior monks in the past didn’t practice just forms and flashy moves like they do today, they actually fought and incapacitated resisting opponents. This is the point I’m trying to stress, “warrior monks” of the past practically don’t exist today, because the shaolin temple is protected and no longer under threat from bandits etc. Also, warfare has changed. All the weapons that you see in wushu like broadswords, staffs and spears were used because they were the “top technology” of the time, and monks were often called to help in war. In that sense, modern “warrior monks” should have been spec ops trained in gunfighting. Sounds funny, doesn’t it? Well, that’s what the shaolin monks were, during a very long period of Chinese history

@@steliosvryonis7373 I understand your point, but mine isn't about the exterior physical aspects. There is still a practical way to use this training, but not for showing off. I'm stressing the self-development part, because in order to be a skilled "warrior monk" you need to achieve psychological and spiritual balance. An angry, lazy, gluttonous or proud monk will have limited discipline and skills, so that is, in fact, the most meaningful aspects. And that is something you can apply to anything in life, that's the beauty, the ART, the training is a practical way, the discipline to achieve that. If you focus only in showing off you might miss that part. That's all. Don't get me wrong, when I say "show off" I mean focusing in that only you know, just to impress, to look good, I know that shows and presentations are absolutely necessary to keep the culture alive, but there's just so much more about it.

@@danielmar99able I agree on the cultural, self-development part, I just thought you were also talking about martial arts by promoting the traditional monk image. On that note, every master is different, so being “flashy” and promoting your school by having a more extroverted attitude doesn’t necessarily mean you don’t respect the spirituality/culture

I don't know if he's a shaolin Master, he uses the monkey Stick Form which is also used in Shaolin but Shaolin is the Temple and Shaolin Monks(Masters) are the people that teach there or did learn there and became (Warrior) Monks. Look up Ranton, he explains it a bit more in his Shaolin videos
