Joe and Bruce became great friends after this, Bruce offered Joe the role of Colt in Way Of The Dragon, but Joe refused to lose to Bruce in the movie, he wanted the fight at the end of the movie to be a draw, Bruce said no and they ended up arguing over that fact and the friendship was over. Bruce offered the role of Colt to Chuck instead, and the rest is history.

I don't remember from what I've seen Bruce ever in exhibition actually do anything except try to improve as in what he'd learnt to enhance someone else interested in life or this life style. I was in High School in Seattle in 1962 or 63 when Bruce Lee visited my school. We were told that there was going to be an early morning meeting of the Lettermans Club just before an all school assembly. At the meeting was this short young Chinese guy, We were told his name but the name didn't stick at that time. He came around and talked with each of us personally for a few minutes and he was trying to teach a martial art. In 1963 (or so) we didn't know what that was. Anyway, he shook hands with each of us and we were off to the assembly. It was in the school gym. Turns out this guy was the center of that assembly and demonstrated his talents. I even saw him do this punch. He got one of our very husky football players to volunteer to take the punch. After the assembly we soon forgot about the whole thing and went on being 16, 17 year old kids. Years later I managed to put 2 and 2 together and figure out who the guy was. At that time he wasn't famous. That is how I met Bruce Lee. Since then I have been to him and his sons' graves many times as I have family at the same place.

@@criticmind9885 To be honest that was around 58 years ago and though I remember the hand shake I can't tell you how his hand felt. It was firm but that is all I remember. About 2000 I was in San Francisco and a taxi I was riding in had about a dozen Bruce Lee action figures sitting on the dashboard. We were stuck at a Rail Road crossing and I commented to the driver about the figures and mentioned I had met him. He was interested so I told him the story I posted above. When I got to my destination and I was going to pay the driver comped me the ride for the story. Surprised me but seems he was happy to have met someone who had met Bruce Lee. My 15 minutes of having met someone famous.

@@meatbag2405 lol I too hate the way many people and many brucelee fanatics portray him like he is some superhuman that can beat heavyweights and etc, but to be fair his techniques are excellent and to say that he can't beat people in his generation..I disagree on that, bruce lee in his time was one of the leading proponents of modernizing the practice of martial art and also he is one of the early proponents of mixed martial art- he studied different martial arts such as boxing, fencing, savate, wing chun,and etc while his peers in china and many parts of the world were stucked doing kata with little regard of sparring matches. So I think bruce lee will easily adapt and beat many martial arts esp those traditional martial artists.

Thanks for the great video of these two legends. My father and Joe Lewis served together in the Marines in 1964-65 and earned their black belts in Shotokan karate (the style developed by the great Gichin Funakoshi) in a dojo in Okinawa. My Dad was the only other heavyweight, so worked with Lewis every day, which he said was brutal, especially his side kick. Lewis earned his black belt in 7 months, my Dad in 11. Besides work, they had little else to do, and focused on their karate day and night. Dad said Lewis would have him hold his feet while he walked on his knuckles on the concrete of the dojo floor and out on the streets and footpaths, until Lewis' striking knuckles were like horns. He said Joe Lewis is the baddest man he ever met.

Joe Lewis did not study Shotokan in Okinawa he was studying at Eizo Shimabuku's Dojo in Kin Village along with Cpl Delling, I was at the Kin Dojo Eizo Shimabuku's Brother Tatsuo Shimabuku's Dojo, where Sensei Advincula was teaching..

For most of my life I personally trained with two grandmasters pictured in the somewhat famous photo from the 1967 All American Open that was held in Madison Square Garden when Chuck Norris won that tournament. To quote one GM "Bruce Lee actor, all masters stay at one hotel, Bruce Lee stay at another. lol That being said I feel Bruce Lee was a great actor and martial artist who did a lot to gap the bridge of Martial Arts to main stream cinema. PS I did have Bruce Lee's photo in my room when I started training in the 70's.

The thing that I most admired about Bruce Lee was how deep a thinker he was, a great philosopher. His mind made him a great fighter. This gave him an edge. Planting the seeds of doubt in your opponents mind and it will grow into a forest of fear, then you become lumberjack that chops them down.

He wasnt just an actor, he was an incredible technical martial artist. That said he never has participated in a full contact fight or competition, so thats where that argument comes from. Real fighting is indeed a completely different ball park. I have been lucky to have met Joe several times before he sadly passed away and also Bill Wallace. Both amazing full contact fighters.

I’ve been in many myself, and in my youth, against way more people sometimes than me against either me, or with a friend helping out, depending on the fight. I don’t know a single thing about martial arts, but I do understand the lessons learned in street fighting. You never forget those lessons, so my guess is he would have destroyed anyone, and the greatest fighters in the world agree. Nobody seems to make that connection.

I was devastated when he died, but he will always live on in my heart. He wrote a poem about the subconscious mind, called “The Void” and he made reference to it in Enter the Dragon when they remastered the movie for the 25th anniversary and added his philosophy that they cut out of the original movie. Also, he knew how to rescript his subconscious mind, brain and nervous system through audio sounds and relaxation to enhance his speed, in which I specialize in today. That’s the huge part of him that he took to the grave and most of the world and fans are not aware of it. He was ahead of his time in that area as well. Actually, that’s what was behind the phenomenon that captivated the world. We really didn’t get a chance to see the other amazing things he could do and knew about. His death was a bigger tragedy to humanity than what people realize.

Taky Kimura, Bruce's friend, was my instructor and he had the fastest hand speed I've ever seen. Not just "oh that's fast" but truly remarkable hand speed.

@@alexandrucatalindragan6842 While i agree the 6" punch isnt practical in a fight, it is a great show to how a grounded stance along with a 2 way tork motion can generate a great amount of force, even from a 6" distance. Its a great learning tool in developing powerful strikes without throwing your bodyweight behind it as it requires all the same fundamentals as a longer distance strike which will have even greater force behind it. So learning the 6" punch is used to both learn the proper body placements and movements to powerful punches as well as teach it through demonstrating its effect even at short distances. This is why this event shown in the video was more of a demonstration, rather than some sort of comparison or competition... Used to insight and inspire future generations into learning and perpetuating the arts...

Just wanted to add for example: what if Bruce got in a fight with a guy in a car or small elevator where there is not much room to really punch like in a "practical fight." These kinds of fights happen everyday all over the world. I would bet Bruce would destroy another capable martial artist in such an example. I never met Bruce Lee. I was a young kid when he died. However, I studied several different martial arts as an adult over the course of more than two decades. I encountered the one inch punch on several occasions. It is very impressive the first couple of times you experience it. Thereafter, you start to notice that it feels more like a push than a punch. It definitely moves you away from the guy executing the punch. It can be a decent method of opening distance between a fighter and his opponent. It can even knock an opponent to the ground if he is off balance or not expecting it. What it doesn’t do is inflict any damage. Just like Joe Lewis did in the video, you get right back up without being hurt. A good way to conceptualize this is to place your open palms an inch away from an opponent. Now lean forward and push while making sure to continue driving your palms forward even when your opponent begins to move backward. Your opponent will move in much the same way as with a one inch punch. He won’t be injured unless he falls and hits his head or something else goes very wrong. Boxers do similar moves all the time. I don’t think this does anything to detract from the reputation of Bruce Lee. He was remarkably strong for his size, was extremely fast, and was one of the most skilled martial artists of his time. All other things being equal, however, f=ma and ke=1/2mv^2. Size does matter.

Thank you very mucj for this post. Consistent and clear. I have a questiom/inquiry/thing, though: Mass is not volume. Size is not the same as weight. Or at least that's what I've learnt. You could produce a lot ofnpower by recruiting muscle fiber along the kinetic chain insteas of isolated, simple muscle action. But that being said, I mean that muscle size is not always strength right? Things Bruce Lee is known from is including weightlifting on it's training, besides being able to perform very complex and hard calisthenic movements. It does not reflect on his size, and I don't have too much info on hin but maybe he was a heavy weight (muscle strength is a dense muscle, so it weighs a lot [high mass]). By the way I'm just enjoying the talk and raising some genuine questipns here, my argument was over as soon as it started. I'm interested in developing strength avoiding hypertrophy as much as possible.

From a physics perspective, the big issue with mass is that it places an upper limit on the amount of force any person can deliver with a single punch, kick, or other attack. Let’s stick purely with f=ma for the moment. Acceleration in this context refers to any change in velocity so it can refer to either an increase or decrease in velocity. Both have an impact on the amount of force a martial artist can deliver. With regards to a decrease verses increase in acceleration, imagine the difference in force generated by a punch delivered to an opponent under the following different circumstances. The punch will deliver more force if an opponent is standing still than if he is backing away from the punch. The punch will deliver yet more force if he is moving into the punch after it has already reached peak velocity. From the perspective of kinetic energy, we would look at mass and velocity. Ke=1/2mv^2. Velocity here is essentially what we typically think of as speed. I think it is fair to say that there is an upper limit to the velocity with which humans can deliver a punch. There comes a point beyond which our skeletal structure, nervous system, muscular system, etc. simply cannot go. There will certainly be differences between individuals but there is bound to be an upper limit for our species. Let’s assume we have two individuals who deliver a punch at an identical velocity. Under those circumstances, the more massive individual will always have a higher limit on the amount of force he is capable of generating. Of course, things are rarely that simple in reality. One fighter will almost always be faster than his opponent. Physical conditioning also impacts stamina and strength. We have seen in MMA that both of those are significant. Skill level and variety of skills also have an impact. Being accustomed to taking a punch or kick can make a huge difference in outcome. Sheer determination can sometimes help compensate for other weaknesses. Experience in fighting is a major issue. Well developed muscles increase both mass and strength. The ratio of fast twitch to slow twitch muscle can improve speed. I understand there is a specific gene complex that heavily impacts that last factor but this is far outside of any of my areas of expertise. My understanding is that just about anybody can make major improvements via targeted exercise but that some people just have better genetics. I really didn’t mean to suggest all of the other factors involved don’t matter. I will admit to being tired of hearing well intentioned martial arts instructors telling students that size doesn’t matter. Of course it matters. That much is simple physics. Less massive martial artists start with a handicap. It makes sense to be cognizant of your weaknesses so that you can develop strategies to improve them or compensate for them. A quick Google search suggests that Bruce Lee was 5’8” and weighed 130 pounds. His physique placed upper limits upon the amount of force he was capable of generating. I would argue that he was very aware of these limitations and was dedicated to improving them where possible and compensating for them when it was not possible. Very few people show that kind of dedication.

@@MinionofNobody yeah, I believe it matters from a biological point of view. Studies suggest thst a muscle can only be so strong if it doesn't grow in size. I saw saying thay being big isn't necessary strong in a lot of cases, and it directly impacts the equation since a big muscle has less muscle density than a strong muscle (of course, there is a line where a big muscle is also a strong muscle, but they are not necesarrily related). Bruce was fairly light though. There's also a mathemathical proportion as to how much people can lift depending on their weight, and it's never more than 3 times their weight, so hypertrophy + strength makes more sense in a literal way. But studies, I believe, have only covered this in so many areas, not including specific athlethic / martial srts groups ( probably because of lack of study subejcts). These kind of disciplines show how much the human body can adapt thanks to constant effort. I wonder how much Force Bruce was able to put in a fully accelerated, full range of motion kick/punch.

50 years I was a skinny lanky teen sponging up Bruce Lee's various fighting styles, use of simple weapons, sand bags and the rope wrapped swivel pole. It got me out of a lot scraps when I was stationed in Panmonjong JSA, SK. Back then Soul university students would go on a rampage during some of their demonstrations and if you're a lone round eye roaming the red district, you either had to be a fast runner or be ready for a street fight ,yeah you might get bruised and banged up, but they didn't mess with you after you ring a few bells on them.. If it wasn't for Bruce Lee, I would have been looking at roses long ago, I still miss him and respect him even though I never got to meet him personally! Bruce didn't discover it. He learned how to generate force like this from doing Wing Chun in Hong Kong. "Intercepting fist", which Bruce named his system after, is a concept from Wing Chun, where an opponents attack is seen as an opportunity to also attack and deflect at the same time, hence "intercepting fist." People in the West think Bruce invented all these things because he was the first to bring them to the west but much of his knowledge came from kung fu. Where he was more revolutionary was including techniques from other styles, rather than sticking dogmatically to a system as taught by a master.

He explains how to do it in his book, The Tao of Jeet Kun Do. Basically, you use your whole body to punch. Starting with twisting the foot, pushing off with the toes, turning the hips, etc - all the way up the arm and into the punch. Great book if you’re into martial arts.
