Omark's puck skills have always been eons higher than everyone else's, but he never made it because his skating was just ok and his compete in board battles and the rough going was non-existent- he is the poster child for why skill isn't the greatest indicator for NHL success. When you're 5'9" you better be able to skate and have some other element to your game. He also had the attitude of not wanting to stick around if he wasn't going to be a top 6 forward with powerplay time. Excellent player in Europe though.

@@michaels9574 Nah, he wasn't good enough for the NHL. His best NHL highlight being a completely pointless (Eck is coping with his explanation of the move) spin o rama in a shootout kinda shows he didn't have the rest of his game anywhere near good enough to showcase his puck skills at the NHL level.

I was live at that game and I was, as an avid oilers fan, well aware of Omark's reputation. So when we saw him come over the boards to take the shootout, the place was already bananas, and when he scored after the spin-o-rama, the lid came off the building. I have an autographed photo of the shootout and not ashamed to say it, an Omark oilers jersey still hanging in my closet.

I remember Kyle Wellwood attempting to go through the legs during a game (because he had no room to do anything else) he barely missed and the hockey media at the time lost their minds. They acted like this was a big disgrace and players shouldn't attempt moves like that. It's amazing how skilled moves used to be so frowned upon, I'm glad things have changed in the league.
@poejavelski148

Ya I never understood the between the legs hype. It’s a legitimate move in tight situations when it’s physically impossible to get it to the forehand normally. Everyone creams their pants over a between the legs goal, and in this case complains about being too flashy, when in reality it’s quite common and straight up useful.
@namwob101

Always been a huge Marty St. Lous fan, grew up watching him play college hockey all 4 years at UVM, but he's one to talk with that weird move he did in shootouts where he'd turn his back to the goalie at the last second and backhand it in. Then there was Stamkos who did the last second spin-o-rama goal, which is now illegal because he actually stopped the puck from moving forward in the process.

Omark is a legend, so is Malik in my eyes. Malik's shootout goal came when the shootout was still fairly new and malik is by no means considered a skilled player. the between the legs move exploded after that in my minor hockey leagues with every kid trying it and talking about it. still one of my favourite shootout goals ever. nobody expected it, and the gall for a defensive defenceman to try it and score in a way nobody had seen before was wild. omark was good, but malik had way more of an impact

I had season tickets then. This was crazy, and it was crazy. Nobody knew what to do. Now, here is the thing that was having everyone not knowing what to do after about it. The shootout had been relatively new at the time. So, they were adapting the rules, etc., etc.. They have a clearer clarity of certain things in the shootout now. And one is from here. The puck has to always have a forward momentum happening. Any backwards at all, they blow the play dead. Which was what the puck did when Linus did the spin at the beginning. He took the puck back for a brief moment.

Mini intermission. 5 minutes of 3-on-3, switch ends, another 5 minutes of 3-on-3. If game is still tied, then it stays tied, and both teams get one point. Hot Take: "Visors are stupid, either wear a full cage or nothing." The only benefit of having the airway accessible is for intubation or suction (which never happens and it's still easy to take the cage off while still protecting c-spine and you can still shove the ducanto/yanker through the cage for suction). A full cage will prevent many unnecessary injuries that are happening frequently while offering no downside except a cage hurts when you punch it, but you shouldn't be punching other people anyways and players break their hands on visors (which are stupid) anyways.

Puck should be moving forward which is impossible doing a spinnarama. Not having the puck move forward places the goalie at a big disadvantage especially for their position and to anticipate the shoot. It is one of those goals that fans who never played hockey adore and hockey players hate.

It was awesome as an oilers fan. I couldn’t understand why people thought it was classless. The nhl was SUPER boring at that time especially as an oilers fan.

Actually, this seems pretty incredible. I'd say a penalty shot (or a shootout) is basically a mind-game between the goalie and the shooter and if the shooter can do something like THAT and throw the goalie off, then he should do it. No idea why that kind of skill would be looked down upon.

thats all fine n dandy. I cant stand the coming in from extreme angles then slowing to a 2mph glide until the shooter sees the spot open up. def advantage for the shooters nowadays

What’s the big whoop? It’s a pretty basic move that my peewee dies to freeze the goalie. He either goes 5 hole or makes an additional move to slide it past the goalie. It’s great when you freeze the goalie.

To use a baseball term, Omark was a "Quadruple A" guy... too good for the AAA Leagues (AHL) but not good enough for the majors (NHL). He shines in foreign leagues where the competition is somewhere between NHL and AHL... hence Quadruple A.

The shootout has led to some pretty fancy shots & goals. It is an opportunity for non-superstar players to display their talents. I enjoy the show but I can't help but think hotdoggin' it can cost a much needed point.

I watched this when it happened and anyone who didn’t think the spin O-rama froze the goalie and massively contributed to the mind games played before the moves were even made doesn’t know hockey. Half the battle in one on one battles like the shootout are won and lost with mind games. The other half was skill obviously but that’s why some players who are really skilled and great players aren’t amazing in the shootout Alex ovechkin is a perfect example for being the 2nd greatest goal scorer of all time currently his shootout stats are just average if not below average. Mind game’s definitely play into the shootout battles

I'm fine with that kinda stuff, the shootout ones that kill me are the "I'm gonna basically walk in going so slow I'm barely moving forward" moves. L A M E!

Spin or not, that man was hustling down the ice. I'll take that over the players that make 30 moves while hardly moving forward any time.

I remember seeing Omarks shootout goal that he barely flipped over who ever she was playing at the time waaaayyyy back when and then later Datsyuk copied it. If Datsyuk copies a move you do…….brother you are indeed THAT GUY.

As long as the puck is moving every player should be allowed to do whatever they want but not a reel slapshot to avoid unnecessy injuries. A fake slapshot is ok to me. Every move a player do, fake slapshot or something else, has as purpose to fool goalie. It's a mind game. But the worst made by NHL because of the innovation or the domination of a player, is to forbid golies to play the puck in the corner. It's just make any sense. They say it was to help the offense, they were wrong. In the other hand, the decision to apply penalties for holding and hooking speeded up the game and helped the offense. So, I think that now, goalies should be allowed to touch the puck wherever they want to hep the defense to avoid big hits at full speed by the forward. Nice clip. I did not know Omark was that skillled.
