My first ever experience with a Harley Dyna Fat Bob, its safe to say it didn't quite go to plan. Stay tuned to find out.
I go into detail on how this bike could be the definition of what a Harley truly is, amazing sound, American feel, torque, handling, what a beast. It was all going so well until...
The Vance and Hines twin slash slip ons fitted to this bike really give it the proper Harley sound. The looks and feel of this bike are tremendous and the character is unmatched by modern day Harleys, the twin cam 103 motor has oodles of character and provides a lot of vibration through the bike and to the rider!

No worries , great review, as others have said thanks for including the battery issue. Had a new 2021 Softail Standard delivered to my home - he rolled it out of the trailer - would not start! Battery discharged from sitting at dealership- put on trickle , started up in 5 minutes, never had an issue again. The poor kid from the Harley dealer was so upset - told him relax, all will be well ! Thanks again for great video.

Excellent motorcycle in every way. I have ridden a Dyna Wide Glide since 2002, my young son has a 2013 Fat Bob with a 110 on it. My FXDWG is hopped up a lot and has been upgraded to the 6 speed Transmission and rides beautifully. The Fat Bob is still the best Dyna I have ever ridden. I would not get rid of my Wide Glide but, if I had room for it in the garage amoung my 4 other Harleys I would have the Fat Bob in there with them.

15:38 deffinetly electrical, my advice is probably a bit daft. straddle the bike in first, roll it back half a pace (about 5-10cm or so) then try again. if the bike is on compression then this will back it off compression, which will allow the starter to get some momentum to get started.

I have a 2011 Dyna Fat Bob with the 96ci engine. Other than regular wear and tear items it’s never let me down. As you rightly say, it’s a great long distance bike which has taken me around France, Spain as well as the UK. It’s a very visceral ride; smooth whilst moving but vibrating at idle. At start up the whole thing jumps. I love it ☺️

I'm not a massive Harley fan myself, but in my view this is what a 'proper' Harley should be like. Great review & I hope the channel does more of them. 👍👍

I just recently picked up a one owner 2009 Softail Custom. Almost all stock. It is what I think of when I think Harley Davidson. Love the look, and it actually handles much better than I was expecting with that wide rear mag, and narrow "dual sport" 21 inch up front. I considered the Super Meteor, but got this for less money.

I have had 5 new Harleys starting with a 1990 FXRS. I had major problems with all of them. From transmissions eating the tensioner spring to leaking cases. Yes cases that leaked engine oil directly into the primary! Two had complete engine rebuilds before 40,000 miles. Once they stopped standing behind their bikes and expected me to pay for their poor engineering which seems to be getting worse not better. I bought a Honda ST1300 63,000 miles nothing but routine maintenance! Tires oil changes. That’s it. Owe I did change the spark plugs at about 40,000

Modern gel batteries seem to have a very short life span. I just got a new battery for my 650 V-Strom. The old one barely lasted four years despite using a trickle charger and never letting it get run down. I was told I was lucky to get even that many years out of it! (However, the system is still allowing the battery to discharge, so most likely a faulty stator or regulator. Learning how to measure it through and fix it is going to be my little job for this winter. In the meantime, my Enfield Hunter is happy to get more miles than usual 😁 )

I was just about to type that this is almost certainly a battery issue and you confirmed it. Big twins need a bit of voltage to push the current through the windings on the starter motor. Not only that, vibrations give batteries a hard time. And bike batteries often get left partially uncharged for long periods of time which causes sulfation (rooted battery syndrome). They won't take or hold a charge at that point, no matter how long you leave them on the charger for. You might be lucky and start the bike "first kick" so to speak, and not notice the problem, but two kicks and it's all over. I bet you if you'd chucked a multi meter across the terminals you'd be down in the 10 or 11 volt range. Engines like that one will just laugh at that.

@@jonnybegood4848 You would be well advised to consult with a professional before making the switch. Converting to L-ion may seem obvious but the regulator/rectifier may need to be replaced. Sometimes this means replacing the alternator. Lithium ion batteries don't stand up well in the presence of heat or vibrations, either.

That is what I have found, is it isn't the bike as much as how the bike makes you feel. Like on my Heritage, it makes me feel like a real biker then the Street Glide I traded in for it. My Sportster makes me feel like a bad ass biker with the Rush exhaust and how I sit on it. My new ZX4RR makes me feel younger without trying to kill myself. I've been riding for over 50 years and soon turning 70 this month. I hope to have at least 10 more years for riding. I lift weights and keep myself in great shape just to be able to enjoy as much of my life as I can.

Yep, that was my guess from the start - dead battery. I wouldn't call the Fat Bob a quintessential Harley-Davidson. It was quite controversial from the start and rejected by many as not a real Harley. (the M8 version even more so). Putting mids on this model is not a simple affair and can be quite costly . . . really not worth buying if your going to go that route. Glad you really like it, though. Hoping you'll do more reviews of Dynas and pre-2018 Softails (recall that Dynas and Softails were separate and very different lines) . . . many to choose from and all a unique experience.

Most battery chargers will indicate if a battery is defective. Makes me think it's the stator/magnets/rectifier or even the coils, and the battery may have been damaged by other defective parts. Sadly (for a buyer) a new battery will mask these problems ..... for a while.

Hi D'Arcy, I've just bought this Fatbob from Sycamore, I hope they have fixed the problem, Harleys I ve owned in the past have suffered from a poor connection on the starter, it's usually something simple. I'm enjoying the videos, keep them coming please.

Awesome congratulations! I’m sure they have fixed it. If it happens again then you’ll know it was like that when you picked up and I’m sure they’ll fix it for you! They’re a good team. Glad you like the videos!

Thanks for your review, if the battery was original and 6 years old it was on borrowed time, past 3 years if it hesitates to start and we've got a trip coming up the cost of a new one down at Bristol Batteries is a fraction of buying one abroad never mind the hassle of breakdown in some remote location.

For a minute there I thought it was the key fob battery that was flat... That actually happened to me once with my Street Bob... 😅

I have a 2010 Fat Bob, and have had similar issues when the bike has been sitting for a while (like at a dealership or just because). The HD batteries suck. Almost HAVE to keep a trickle charger on them. Mine is in the garage dead now, because I have been riding the Africa Twin for its better weather protection. I love mine, but it is not perfect. There is no wind protection waist down. The forward controls are ok for a couple of hours, but after that it takes an effort to keep your feet on the pegs due to the bulging breather cover. It’s very fast.

Harley Davidson has a good team of designers, and a history behind the brand. The sales figures just tells they aren’t doing very well and hasn’t since mid 00’s. The 103 Twin Cams may be the last call of a propper HD experience due to it’s vibes. The M8 are refined, and many of the older HD enthusiasts just don’t like the change. The younger generations are looking on other brands than Harley now. Personally, i never liked the vibration in their engines. It’s too much for my taste, but sound are it’s own, but also explains why it shakes as it does. Then the prices are way too high too.

Knew it was the battery straight away hearing it crank, my virago 535 did that exact same thing start of this winter. I'm guessing the battery hasn't been replaced for awhile.

Great to see you reviewing a Dyna Fat Bob , had a few Dyna's over the years and loved them all (especially my FXDX Super Glide Sport) if you want to ride the ultimate Dyna Fat Bob then find a CVO version with the 110 motor, it will put a smile on your face (Superbike Factory have currently got one for sale)

I checked Superbike Factories website and they have two CVO Dyna Fat Bob in stock, I'm sure if you call them and tell them who you are they will let you take one for a spin (they let MotoBob test ride bikes)

I'm glad you didn't edit the video - weak batteries are just a fact of life with motorcycles. 2017? Probably original battery - manufactured in late 2016! Seven years ago! Hardly surprising the battery is toast!

You should really have a look at the English Triumph Thunderbird commander 1700 as a nice comparison to this bike You only find them secondhand though as triumph discontinued them, but it would definitely be an interesting comparison

I had a 2017 Dyna lowrider and the OEM battery lasted just 3 years. It would take a charge and was good for one startup then dead again.

I just bought a 15' and as you mention the forward controls. After I got used to them it definitely feels like an attack position. Its really hard to keep from wanting to use all that power and stay a law abiding citizen. 😂

For what its worth there could be a dead spot. If you pushed it 10 yds forward it may have started. Ive seen it myself at the Isle of Wight ferry treminal. My mates Harley was dead and the security guy said its common, just push it over there and it will start....and it did!

I've got a 2007 96ci Street Bob with 64000 miles on it, I've done 55000 of those miles, Portugal, Spain, France, Scotland etc, the only problem I've had was the starter clutch, the bike came in from Japan with 9000 miles on it, mine has mid controls with mini apes and I find it very comfortable, it came with harder fork springs and Ohlin shocks and handles pretty good, love how lazy the motor is, it's stage one with Cycle Shack slip on's, high flow air filter which is basically a sponge around a wire cage in the centre, other mods I've done are Arlen Ness big rotor on the front and EBC rear rotor so it stops fairly well, plus it's tuned with a DynoJet Power Vision, also added a Mustang Seat for more comfort, I treated myself to a new Triumph Speed Twin 1200 in January 2023 which has 8500 miles on it now which took me to Poland through France, Holand, Germany and back through Germany, Belgium and France, but I'm keeping the Harley along with the Triumph, just can't bring myself to part with her, best of both worlds in my humble opinion.
