Zebra nerites are eaceful, small and efficient, and are an excellent choice for algae control in a broad range of tanks. They eat flat type algaes, and are beautiful as well! They do not breed in freshwater, making them an excellent choice with controlled population.
Neritine parallela/natalensis- Zebra nerite
Adult size 1"
pH 6-8
Diet: algae only

I have three nerites my largest is about an inch around and my smallest is about as round as my pinkie nail. There is a mid sized one about a 1/2in around. My oldest nerite is about 4 years old. Sometimes she carries the baby on her while zooming around the tank. They are so cute.

Rachel O'leary I also say the same thing they are the best little snail for Nano and small tanks. I'm just getting into the hobby but I have many tanks. I also like planted tanks. I ended up picking up some horned ones because they stay the smallest. Once I saw them only eat the dead part of the plants, I was instantly in love with them LOL. Can I collect eggs and transfer to proper environment to hatch?

I understand they need an estuary set up (brackish water). Short end of it, the point at which a fresh water stream meets the ocean. There is a low amount of salinity (salt) content there. Trick is figuring out the right balance. Haven't tried myself, but I want to and I think I would start by getting a bucket of water from such a location and doing my best to mimic the salinity content, and temperature by testing water temp at source in a few spots to try and get it right. I'd then mess with it from there. If you try this let us know how it works. Would be super cool to know how it worked out. Just not ready myself.

Hi Rachel, after watching so many of your videos and seeing you care for your animals I purchased from you 6 different types of nerites and also 6 amano shrimp and they might just be the best investment I've made in this hobby. They are without a doubt the hardest working group of critters I've ever seen. Ever since they have been in my tank... Algae? What's that? Excess food from over feeding... Gone! Sure you have to vacuum and do water changes but these guys cut the work in half. BTW both the snails and the shrimp LOVE soft cooked, shelled green peas and mashed cooked carrot pieces. It's like a Pirhana feeding frenzy when I put them in the tank. Everyone should buy these from you!

My favorite is all to common. Lol. The Common Plecostomos I know it's not a fancy fish but i find them adorable and they grow into their personality as they age. I also have a thing for monster fish and being that the Common Plecostomos can reach up to two feet is always cool. I also like the fact that they pretty much eat anything that hits the bottom of the tank. Also I love feeding them veggies and watch their mouths as they chew. To me it is the best fish that eats algae but I know they are not that efficient at eating it. Plecostomos love ❤️ is rare but they make me oh so happy.

Thanks for that spotlight Rachel! Could you someday please do a video what kind of snails are good for soft or low pH water? Hard to find a lot of info regarding that since most people have harder water and issues with high pH. My pH is relatively low and only trumpet snails really thrive, would be cool to know if there are other options as well.

I love Nerite snails. I have one named Beetlejuice who's been keeping my two gallon fish bowl clean and polished for six months now. I have a Betta and the bottom has Joseph's coat planted in it, and with the addition of my snail, it seems to be a perfect little ecosystem. Before getting the Nerite, I had a mystery snail, and although they're interesting to watch, they don't do a good job of cleaning the bowl, as there was always a green algae halo surrounding the bottom of the glass. About once a week I drop a small food tablet in to supplement his diet. He did get out once, and I found him by tracing his slime trail. He'd apparently ventured onto the table, and then turned around and started back up the side of the bowl on his way back into the water.

I got two yesterday as an addition to my ten gallon tank as recommend by a few people and the pet store employee to help with maintenance of my algae problem. I would say I already slightly regret my decision and wish I'd dug a little deeper research wise first. I think they're cool but I didn't know about the unsightly egg laying and also had no idea how much they poop. Seriously they've already helped with the algae but I also woke up to so much poop in my tank. It's like oh yeah my algae is better but now there is unsightly poop all over tank decorations which I'm sure in addition to being an eye sore is bad for the water quality.

Couple of questions for Rachel O'Leary: 1. Can/do you sell/ship nerites to Massachusetts? 2. How to I check out your inventory online? (I don't do Facebook.) 3. Do you sell baby/young nerites? I have an old black mystery snail (about a 2" diameter shell) that's about 3+ years old and a smaller (1" diameter) white mystery snail that's about a year old in my 60 gallon terrapin tank, but I'm looking to get a few nerites to start off in my 20 gallon planted tank but they'll move to the bigger tank once the mystery snail(s) expire. My terrapin only chases ghost shrimp and occasionally I give him tiny ramshorn snails as a treat, so he doesn't go after anything about 1" big as he's only 1.5 years old & about a 4" long shell. Thank you in advance for any info you can give me.

Hey Rachel! I wanted to hear your thoughts on calcium supplement options for snails. I've heard that you can use tums or plaster of Paris cubes? I just got a small horned nerite snail and a pair of male guppies 2 days ago. My aquarium is 3 gallons, and I've had plants and a filter in there for 2 months with a fertilizer tablet. (Water wisteria, Anubias nana, and a dwarf pond lily, and I have some pothos growing inside the filter alongside the pouch of carbon.) I added a heater, thermometer, and air stone connected to a pump fit for 5 gallons run through an adjustable valve. I've mostly been replacing evaporated water with tap water that I've left sitting in clean cups for about 2-3 days to offgas, occasionally using distilled water, and I have a gravel bed. I can't find my water testing strips to test right now, but I had tested it recently and it was perfect before getting stocked.

Have also been considering some apple snails out in the pond this year. Something that I have been told is that snails can be disease carriers. I wondered about your thoughts on that. I do follow strict quarantine procedures with anything that I bring in. Do snails exhibit specific symptoms?
@RachelOLeary

Snails exhibit no symptoms, they are intermediary hosts. It is unlikely to be an issue in a closed container pond, but doing a qt of a month when you bring them back in would reduce any risk.

Generally, they are not in there long enough for it to cause issues. I simply put them in every tank so they can graze on algae- not for the long term. I just figured out how as I have another set up with basically floating plants (dying because of a light deficiency) for a tadpole set up. It's temporary and I noticed they are under the floating plants all the time and occasionally falling as they loose grip. It just all added up at this point.

I’ve recently put one of these guys in my aquarium because I had lots of algae developing. It cleared up the algae really fast and now I’m worried there’s isn’t enough algae. Are there other ways to feed it. Will they take algae wafers?
@RachelOLeary
@RachelOLeary 6 жыл бұрын
look at the ingredients on the algae wafers, they are usually mostly fish meal. I find these guys REALLY hard to supplement but occasionally they will take gelatinized foods. If your tank is mature (over a few months old), it is entirely likely that there will be enough biofilm (the slippers stuff on the inside of hte glass) for the snail to eat. How efficient they are is why I generally recommend no more than 1 snail per 5-10g of tank space. Its pretty incredible how much algae they can eat. If you are extremely concerned, you could put a small bucket with some rocks and water to cover in the direct sun to grow some supplemental algae.

i heard these snails can't breed in freshwater?
@savannam.7048
@savannam.7048 6 жыл бұрын
qaching, they can lay their eggs in freshwater, but they cannot hatch without brackish water, so the eggs stay inert until removed. So if you buy four nerites for a freshwater tank, you'll have only four until they pass away or you buy more. The eggs are easy to remove if caught within a few hours, otherwise you need a credit card or razor blade to scrape them off. I don't mind it, they keep green spot algae cleaned from my tank in exchange for me removing a couple of eggs a month. A few eggs is much easier to remove than green spot algae and nerites are one of the only organisms in freshwater tanks that will eat that algae. So for me, it's a beneficial trade-off and they're super cute too.

@RachelOLeary
@RachelOLeary 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, though you would not want to add 2 to an immature 10g (as in hasn't been running for 6 months or more), as they can easily starve
@remhk6672
@remhk6672 3 жыл бұрын
I've had mine for only a month. There's algae bloom due to excessive light. No worries about them starving? Tank just barely cycled. Fed them algae wafers during the time I allowed tank to mature. I know a month is nothing but the fact there's algae is a sign tank has been cycled correct?

So my Zebras in my African cichlid tank seemed to have bread I have one to two millimeters and about 6 to 12 made it. They are juviniles bit and moving around and doing snail stuff. It's not per say brackish water but California water and lots of minerals for cichlids. How is this possible? And I can't find any info on breeding at this stage. Not sure what to do

Rachel - I was wondering if you might know why my zebra nerites hangout at the top of the tank, sometimes out of the water, and also climb out and die. I have olive and horned nerites in the same 75 planted and they don't do that. They seem happy and healthy and the zebras act like the just want to get out.

Whenever I set up a brand new aquarium, I get the inevitable outbreak of diatoms and my Zebra Nerites make short work of it. Two in a 40-55 gallon clean that stuff up in 2-3 days. My question is this: how do you think an adult Nerite will fair against adult Assassin snails? I've been thinking about relocating a couple Assassins to my Nerites' primary tank to help curb a pest snail boom. I'd rather not recommend the Nerites to avoid the addition of their eggs to another aquarium, but it wouldn't be the end of the world if it came to that.

So I’ve got a 100g tank, I have a bristlenose plec for algae. The rest of the fish are two 10 inch balla shark, 1 moonlight gourami female passed away, 1 golden gourami again I’ve had my tank for a long time my female counterparts to the gourami died of old age, the two boys get on fine, 3 bousmani ranbows and 1 red rainbow. I’m really understocked for my tank which is great, I love my Balas so I want them to grow out as my feature fish (I had 3 but one got impailed by a piece of drift wood 😢) . In the past I have had this tank packed full of fish, I want just a few big guys which is my Balas and everything else I will adjust. What snails will be big enough but not breed in my tank. I want something I can see, but won’t take over...as my Balas are passive and won’t eat anything other than their food bless them, they are like giant pussy cats

I've kept Nerites for sometime and it the beginning and they would lay eggs all over my wood and it didn't bother me I felt it gave the tank a more natural look. but for some reason over the past 6/8 months hardy any eggs at all I have all kinds horns, Zebras, Etc there beautiful and I have about 20 in a 55g I also keep them in my other 55g and same thing no eggs or hardy any. i also keep cutter bone tied to a smal rock on the substrate and a cuttle bone in an extra AC 50 I use with my canister. they love green beans and other veggies as u know so in ur opinion why no eggs r they ok. i also heard no eggs mean they're gettimg enough food. your my go to person so your opinion would be appreciated.
