I love Dinah (pronounced Die nah) Washington. She also recorded some great duets with Brook Benton, "Baby You've Got What It Takes" and "That's A Rockin' Good Way to Mess Around and Fall in Love". She died of a barbiturate overdose in 1963.

@ Joey Robison Yes, Dinah and Brook, were fantastic! Solo, and together. Such wonderful voice, and talent. I was 8 when the world lost Dinah. A Rainy Night in Georgia, by Brook, is one of my all time favorites.

A similar theme is in the song, “A Perfect Day”, a hit song by the first woman, Carrie Jacobs-Bond, to make a living as a songwriter, beautifully rendered by Paul Robeson in this recording: kzbin.info/www/bejne/amiwapaEjsd0btk You can definitely go down rabbit holes with both Robeson and Jacobs-Bond.

Dinah Washington was an American singer & pianist from the 40's-60's. She covered many genres including jazz, blues, R&B, & traditional pop music. She had a lot of great songs such as "Ain't Misbehavin'", "Am I Asking Too Much", "Baby Get Lost", "I Wanna Be Loved", "Cold, Cold Heart", "Unforgettable", and then two highly successful duets in 1960 with Brook Benton, "Baby (You've Got What It Takes)"& "A Rockin' Good Way (To Mess Around & Fall in Love)". Her last big hit was "September in the Rain" in 1961

One of my favorite songstresses!! A prodigious talent who was supremely confident in her gift declaring that she could sing anything handed to her and did. Everything she sings is great but the next essential to listen to is "This Bitter Earth". What a Difference....was a huge hit that moved her into mainstream success. She has a huge catalog of music to explore-These Foolish Things, Don't Explain, If I Were A Bell are very different songs that show her ability to perform both ballads and uptempo numbers effortlessly. Her temperament apparently matched her talent, both titanic and she lived a fast life marrying at least seven times during her brief 39 years (she died from an accidental overdose). As others have mentioned her first name is pronounced Die-na. Glad you discovered her.

My dad was a big jazz head. When I was a kid I found some Dinah Washington albums. Some possibly on 78 rpm. That was back in the 1970s. My dad was into a lot of the jazz greats when he was young in the 1940s. Jazz is a great American musical form, African American in its origin. Very important music. She was massively talented.

Dinah was the most popular black female singer of her generation..Her grandeur and bold talent made her the queen of the blues. She recorded many white pop hits for the black jukeboxes..This recording made her an international star and was recorded late in her career..She was a jazz headliner as well..Ella, Sarah, and Billie were the acknowledged greatest influence of their time, but few would deny that Dinah was even more popular on records and in person..

This is called vocal light music, late 1950s style..! We call it the 6 hit because of that really iconic straight eight 6 taps going on in the background while she sings. The music theory in the 1950s was like the fourth dimension, half the chords they use aren't even on todays registry.
