As we rugby playing nations say, "American football is played by Americans, rugby is played by men". Many of us played rugby at school. I would get home from school with a closed black eye or split lip and my dad would say "so, you had a good game then"? You can't declare that the US is free and then say that a sport should be banned because people might get bruised.

So because in rugby there are no pads, players don't tackle with their heads first, because a helmet does not keep your brain from bouncing around in your skull we learn to tackle the right way from age 5, also there are rules in place to mitigate head contact in tackles, that's why brain damage isn't rampant in rugby as it is in american football

I played Rugby for 22 years. OK, not at the same level as these guys, but although it's a fairly rough sport, most of the injuries are relatively minor, cuts, bruises, nose, rib, and finger breaks, etc. My nose was broken 4 times, three of those by punches, so it was good to get it fixed when I retired so that I could breathe through it again. The lack of armour is not really a problem, it just means that you have to tackle properly, not launch yourself head-first. I was by no means the biggest player in my side, 6'5" and 230lbs and could do the 100 in 11.7. There were guys who were 6'8" and 300lbs. But there was a place in the team for the little men too. Most of those who played Scrum-Half (number 9), were maybe 5'7" and 130lbs, but they could still take down the big guys. It wasn't just about bulk and power. I am 66 years old now, and it's 26 years since I last played, and I have very few aches and pains as a result of playing. In that respect, it's probably safer than soccer. Of the players in this video, the one I admire most is Sebastien Chabal (number 2). He was big, athletic, fast, and could tackle like a battering ram. But like most Rugby players, he is a gentleman off of the pitch and has appeared regularly on kids TV programs in France. The French (despite their reputation) have produced some fearsome Rugby players - Pascal Ondarts and Gerard Chollet were particularly scary.
@KBJ58

Careers are around 10 years now due to the sheer intensity of the modern game. Big issue as with American Football is the incidence of neurodegenerative diseases. There is currently a law suit from former players against World Rugby. They are implementing measures to minimize concussions and proper rest protocols after such incidents. Other than it's an awesome sport.

To answer your question about the length of the career of a rugby player it is necessary to mention that most rugby players start their careers in what you would know as mid-school and then play into their thirties. A professional career would typically last anything between 10 to 15 years with only a couple of guys going on for up to 20 years.

It's the best sport in the world and not that dangerous. In countries where rugby is popular, kids start playing before they even go to school, so you get used to it. If you are untrained and take a shot like that you might not get up again. Anyway... injuries is not that common. Yes, you will have some bruises and scrapes after every game, but that's normal. I broke 2 fingers (just tape it up and keep playing) , broke a bone in my arm (still finished the game though, and the actual break might have happened about an hour before the game when I had a motorcycle accident so can't really blame it on rugby) and I broke my nose 16 times (more an inconvenience than an injury). Only times I was taken out of the game was once when I had a concussion, and once when I tore an abdominal oblique muscle. Now keep in mind... that was over a span of 13 years. SERIOUS injuries are few and far between.

When you see rugby players arguing or fighting it tends to be about safety they all know just how dangerous the sport is so anyone tackling sloppily or throwing elbows or knees in the scrum is absolutely not tolerated sometimes even by their own team mates if they have shown a tendency to do such things deliberately. Players accept that bruises and even the occasional broken bone is just the cost of doing business but they also know they are one unlucky day away from a career ending or even life altering injury. So will shut down any jackass who's making things more dangerous than they need to be.

Most of the clips here are old. Today the attacks around the head and contact off the ball are illegal. The game is played by female teams, teenagers and childrens teams made up of boys and girls. There are 2 versions of the game. The one you have just watched is the most played and is called rugby union. It has 15 players on a team. The other variation is called rugby league. It is mostly played in the UK in the North of England. League has only 13 players on a team. Rugby is mostly played in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and many of the Pacific Islands such as Tonga, Fiji and Samoa. It is also played in France, Italy and the Catalan region of Spain.

Rugby players can go forever as long as their legs can take them sometimes players drift out of the limelight but still play elsewhere

Rugby is the game played in heaven...which is a good job because many rugby players get there early because of rugby. No gain without pain.

The Springboks only won because the All Blacks were down a man for 50 minutes. That's why they are not seen as true champions by the rugby world.

Why ban the sport? Nobody is forcing simps to play it or even watch it today. Commonwealth countries back in the day instituted the sport into the school system to prepare its male population to be soldiers. Its a sport for men. Its violent. Its aggressive. Its initimidating. Its skillful. Its beautiful. Its not for everyone.

I'm from Namibia but I went to high school & studied in South Africa and played rugby. I broke my left shoulder 3 times and tore a few ligaments in my neck, tore my hip flexor and broke both my wrists over a period of 8 years. You can retire between the ages of 30 to 38 from international rugby😁
