Finally a reviewer who realizes that there are some sports sedan buyers who aren't Hoonigans and just want a stylish, spirited (aka powerful), good-handling, fun-to-drive, reliable car that is good in all weather and can serve equally well as a comfy daily driver or a fun weekend cruiser.

@@layne4376 what else would you need it to do? It's got plenty of tech, heated and cooled seats, a big screen in the center, a ton of safety features. They're all standard by the way. The only thing Acura maybe could have done is bump the power up to compensate for the weight, but this starts cheaper than its competitors and to option any of them out you're easily 8 grand more

Compared to my previous M5 & M6 the Acura is what I wanted - a RELIABLE car that is fast and looks good. My BMW experience was poor. Couldn't keep the dam things out of the shop. The Acura may seem lacking personality - you don't have random squeak or rattle, the transmission works, no random check engine light or transmission cogwheel of death....I hope you get the picture I love mine - it works.

now having logged 8k miles on a Type S, I agree with your endearing observation. Acura worked on this from the ground up. Chassis, ride, steering, and looks all best in class imo. The easy part is to throw a bit of HP to it....which I did and the car is even better. There's too much good going on here as a daily sport sedan to let small, correctable flaws detract from what Acura has done here.....thanks for the video, your voice is gonna blow up!!

Thanks so much! I do think the TLX nails a lot of the good stuff, and it is possible that over a few years some of the minor flaws could be ironed out (or an even more aggressive handling package could be offered). It’s a smashing looking car in search of a little tweaking to achieve greatness. Thanks for watching 🙏🏻

Spot on with this review. I've had mine for about one month and I love it, yes the G70 and Stinger GT are faster but this is by far the better looking of the three. And IMO is the right balance of speed and comfort it's a very good affordable touring car. And it's a Honda so there will be plenty of aftermarket support so if you want to go bonkers with the HP you'll be able to within the next year.

Both before I actually purchased the car and after taking delivery of it, I've watched countless reviews of the TLX-S. Yours is likely one of the most fair I've viewed to date. The omission of a 360° camera at this price point is absolutely a failure. Especially when considering that the Canadian variant has it as an option. Its other flaws are (gratefully) not deal breakers for me. The rear seat legroom is more than adequate for my family's needs (though I could see where it could easily be a shortcoming for others' preferences). It's buckets-full more fun to drive than the second generation TSX it is replacing... and I absolutely adore that car. 😊 I appreciate your candor here, giving praise where it is due and criticisms where they are warranted. You've earned a new subscriber today. Now to work my way thru your back catalog of vids!

I finally got mine white/red beauty and let me disagree on couple of points in this overall great review. 1. Driving dynamics: I am not planning to race track this baby against Corvettes or Blackwings, I am driving it daily to my office, gym etc and this is just amazing car to drive with more than enough power to get yourself into a trouble. 2. I couldn’t care less about size of infotainment system, it doesn’t add any HPs or torque, and I use it once to start my favorite ch40 on XM radio, that’s it. What my point is: this car is perfect for what it is and we shouldn’t expect anything what it is not. It is NOT a race car, this is luxury daily driver with powerful ambition for a very affordable price (including amazing almost free Honda service). That’s my strong opinion brothers.

I own the car, in the color he reviewed. His review is pretty spot on, and I fit the guy he described at the end who’s not tracking the car, but wants to do a little spirited driving here or there. I think for me I prioritized the looks, reliability and cost vs a bmw. I also feel with about 5 grand in aftermarket performance parts, the car will be everything I could ever want in a daily driver, and that’s what I intend to do now that I’ve had it a year.

I just ordered one of these in Tiger Eye Pearl with the Ebony interior (I don't care for the red or the white). 4 month wait right now, but that's okay, I'm patient. I'm the same guy--I don't care about having a track car, but I do like to drive fast--more specifically, I like to accelerate fast, and I also like taking turns at speed. German cars are beautiful, but their reliability isn't that great, especially when compared with Acura and Lexus. So this is the perfect car for me. I'm really looking forward to it.

@jax1079
@jax1079 2 жыл бұрын
This is true. There are a LOT of vehicles in that price range (and below) that have HUDs and more charging options. These things irritate me because the TLX's shortcomings are not deal breakers in most cases, but have some of these livability features (especially at the as-tested price) would go a long way to elevating the TLX in the segment. When you're competing against a brand like Genesis, which is throwing everything and the kitchen sink into their vehicles, this seems like an odd omission from Acura. Thanks for watching!

really enjoyed the video. I have clocked about 2500 miles on mine Type S and the only problem I am having is MPG. Granted I work from home and drive kids to and from school which is about 25 - 30 minutes. Highway; can count on one hand how many times I have been on. I can't get MPG to be 19 . the best I can get is 17.7 or so. I do have it in sport plus at times but mostly in Comfort or Normal due the kids in the car...Thinking of taking to Dealers to have them check somethings...oh..ONLY put Prem/Nitro Shell gas in it.. Not a deal breaker but wonder if these ePA test are accurate..
@jax1079
@jax1079 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you. While your numbers seem a little low (19/25 EPA estimate), it's not THAT far off, really. Any kind of stop and go, idling in this hot weather with the AC on, etc. would be hell on gas mileage. Not to mention the temptation to cane it every now and then... It doesn't take much to lower the average. I'd check it after a nice long highway stint (maybe reset the gauge right before and see what it says). That might give you a more accurate picture. Thanks so much for watching!

Thanks! Yeah, considering how roomy the Accord is, you’d think the TLX would be more space efficient (not because they share a platform - they don’t - but because they come from the same company). It’s one of the main compromises that holds it back from separating itself from the pack. I bet customers would be willing to overlook some of the dynamic compromises if it were incredibly spacious inside (since the G70 isn’t particularly roomy, either). Missed opportunity in my opinion. Thanks so much for watching! 🙏🏻

If they gave us more options on that tiny right screen it might be ok, but you're limited to three options there, and they're redundant. Hey Acura, honda should be your economical vehicle while Acura should be the performance/luxury car ( shouldn't take Honda parts to fill the void. I'm an Acura mdx sh-awd 3.7 owner. In 2011 the mdx 3.7 awd has 300 hp . Now we are in 2022/2023 and I ask myself lately 55 more horsepower in a 11 year difference you would think the new MDX should have atleast 400 horsepower in this era! The lag from a single turbo 3.0 v6 leaves a bad taste in my opinion. Perhaps a rethink on performance would be ideal 🤔 maybe 2 turbos to the 3.0 or perhaps a high output 3.5 with 2 turbos 450/500 hp should be the benchmark for all big suvs and bigger sedans. Sincerely hope that ACURA WILL ADD HP/TORQUE along with the luxurious vehicles you produce every year. Even 300 hp 0/ 60 in 6.1 seconds is old technology. I still have the MDX and seriously thinking about installing a procharger, bigger throttle body, cold air intake and rework the engine so it can be professionally turned. Let's reinvent the luxury/performance vehicles of ACURA. Sincerely a ACURA mdx/tlx owner for life.

When I got mine my main concern was the TouchPad because of how universally disliked it was by seemingly every car reviewer on KZbin, don't know which system got more hate the TypeS or the new Volkswagen one. It took me about three days to get fully adjusted to it. It definitely has its drawbacks and I agree with the screen and font being a bit too small for where the screen is placed as well as myself not having perfect eyesight. But overall I feel it was blown way out of proportion. I can understand why some people don't like it but now that I'm used to it I like it as much as the touch screen.

Nice review. I like how you talk about the intangibles and feeling the car gives you because on paper, this car is an underperformer. In reality it sounds like a great car. I own a G70 and love it but I can see the draw to the Type S. I was a Honda/Acura owner for 20+ years. Great vehicles.

While, I appreciate seeing a review on this car from someone who’s around my height ,it astonishes me and discredits the reviewer that he’s comparing this to an actual sporty car. Why on earth he would think that, that is what they tried to do with this car I have no idea. Maybe instead of the algorithm needing to go back to school as you say , maybe you need to be going back to get a better understanding of who Acura designed this car for. Acura designed this car for, the business professional that wants a spirited drive into work. Acura designed this car for the person that wants value and power but places reliability ahead of performance on their list. I feel like the so-called problems with this car could be rectified with a better understanding of who the car was designed for and if you have a page where you are spouting off all of these opinions, I think it was your job to know that before the review. No one that plans on driving this car for 200,000 miles is going to be flooring it like an idiot. If performance where you tap the pedal and the car flies is what you want, why would you pick this sedan ? It’d be like someone valuing comfort selecting a sport suspension and bitching about stiffness.

This is my favorite review of the new Acura TLX Type S, and I think I've seen most of them as individual and comparison tests. To be honest, I haven't test-driven one but that's because dealerships don't have them in stock. I have yet to see one on the road. The reviewer seems honest and forthright about expectations. I've owned a Legend and currently drive a 2007 TL, which is just about to go over 100K. I put about $5K into it for 100K mile maintenance. Try that with a M340i x drive. I just spent several hours with a dealership, going back and fourth between the 2023 PMC and 2023 TLX Type S. The PMC starts at $74K (really), which I considered, but I can include most of its exclusive features in a factory built Type S. I gave them the deposit and my 2023 TLX Type S will arrive in Jan/Feb of 2023. I'm so excited!

@@layne4376 I don't recall why I mentioned the M340 x drive. It could have been because I wanted to buy one. I've heard the B58 engine is great but I've also heard, from former BMW mechanics and others who own BMWs (not necessarily this particular model) about the overall unreliability and expensive maintenance costs of a BMW once it's out of warranty. There are a lot of opinions out there and most lean towards the negatives. If you have something positive to say about BMWs or the specific model, I'd love to read it. I'm a professional researcher in the medical field, although it doesn't make me an expert on BMWs. It just means I do a bunch of research on consumer products before I drop $70K - $80K on a car.

@@layne4376 Thank you for your reply. I'm sorry to hear about your RDX experiences. I had a 2022 version for over a week as a loaner while they fixed my TL. So many buttons! A person will need to read the manual to figure them out. If my 2023 TLX Type S freaked out like your 2020 RDX, I'd be pissed. I've driven the 2022 TLX Advanced and, again, so many buttons. I'd prefer a standard shifting stick but even the M340i xDrive has gone the button route. Perhaps that's the future of automobiles. Nonetheless, I'm happy to read an Acura/BMW comparison. Anyway, I'm looking at the 2023 340i xdrive again, thanks to you. Whatever car I buy, it has to be AWD (kind of a harsh winter here). I priced the BMW as new and was disheartened by the cost of options standard in the Acura. My experience with Acuras has been exceptional, despite the latest maintenance of the car at 100K miles. A buyer may take issue with the old leather seats but, otherwise, the 07 TL has a near perfect engine. The B58 engine is attractive but I took care of my TL engine with synthetic oil and BG MOA. It's the things not directly associated with the engine (a lot like your RDX) that give me pause. Do you own/lease a 340i xdrive? If so, I'd appreciate your opinion.

@@SargentHQ_CL9 Hello and thank you for the response. Despite the excellent B58 engine, I won't purchase the BMW 340i xDrive. My reasons, aside from reviews of the 2022-23 which aren't usually complimentary (complaints vary but few mention the engine), include maintenance costs, reliability, price and other factors, At the moment, I'm sticking with the TLX Type S. The Genesis G70 is attractive but doesn't handle as well as the Type S. For my price range, and being a thoughtful Acura loyalist, I don't see a vehicle that beats the Type S in terms of reliability and handling. The major complaints of the Type S are lack of space in the backseats and the infotainment touchpad. I've had several Acura models like the TLX and RDX as loaners while they maintain/fix my TL, so I've managed to get though the touchpad without many issues. My iPhone 12 works wirelessly (another complaint I've heard about it not working). I'd like the gauge view of the Genesis when crossing lanes, as well as the 360 view, but can do without them. The Type S, with its SH-AWD and 355 HP and torque, is enough for me. If it does better than my TL on the Rocky Mountain roads, I'll be in love with a machine.
@Jasonboyee
@Jasonboyee Жыл бұрын
You nailed it. The main screen is too small for the distance. A digital gauge cluster is a must at this price point, and what's up with no 360 camera at that price point? The engine can use another 25 HP too. Almost Acura, almost, but cars like the G70, Stinger GT, and CT5 just edge this one out.

I know TLX type S and the new IS350 aren’t in the same class, but in terms of driving, which one do you prefer more as I noticed in the IS350 video you really liked that car. Btw fantastic review!
@jax1079
@jax1079 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! That's a tough question since the Type S is no doubt more "exciting" to drive despite its faults, but the IS 350 has a more linear feel to it (and a clearly RWD chassis). I think the IS is stuck with a weird gap in its lineup thanks to the IS 500, which is quite a bit more expensive -- and awesome. (And to be honest, that's why I think the TLX Type S and IS 350 ARE in the same class. Barely $3k separates the TLX Type S in this video from the IS 350 I had, which seems silly, actually.) A lot of what charmed me about the IS had to do with its looks, but its interior is OLD and doesn't feel quite as special. I'd probably lean slightly TLX from a driving standpoint, just for the excitement (and despite the flaws), but the fact that each one is compromised in such significant ways in this competitive class is why they're both doomed to be bridesmaids and never the bride. Thanks so much for watching!

@@jax1079 that’s really interesting. I got my 22 is350 awd in Canada two months ago, and the price in Canada for the tlx type S vs F3 package (the dynamic handling package plus Mark Levinson in US)is350 is only 600 Canadian dollars different after tax. I think we have the same option with the IS350. the car is somehow just right. If you only look at one of its aspects such as power or interior it is really lacking, but as a whole package, it just makes a great vehicle. It’s not quick but I would argue that it is the most comfortable in its class. I’m really excited to see you review the is500 or maybe to some side to side comparison videos
