As a large breed dog owner, I can confirm that I did indeed wake up one day and decide I wanted a horse in my house. As I described it to my family when they questioned my sanity, I said, "I want people to have to do a double take when I walk him because I want them to be unsure if I'm walking a bear, a small horse, or an unreasonably large dog." I got exactly what I wanted. My family continues to question my sanity, but they love my dog.

My university had three St Bernard therapy dogs that would come in during finals week-Bea, Bobo, and Boomer. They were such sweethearts, they’d all just flop down on the floor of the library and let a gaggle of students surround them for pets and cuddles. Boomer starting coming to campus as a puppy, and even as he got fully-grown he still tried to sit on people’s laps like he was still a little puppy 😂

I had 3 Bouvier de flandres that can get from 40kg to 50kg maybe more for males and they were all like this St Bernard... giant puppys that loved to stay around, very gentle and calm. now I have one that is a mix of a Bouvier with a border collie and sometimes he still thinks he is a puppy and wants to jump on our laps.

I grew up with St. Bernards and Newfoundland’s in our home. We never had a problem with any of these dogs being mean or aggressive. You can brush them, wash them, trim their fur, cut their nails, use noisy electric shavers....as long as you’re not causing them any pain, they will be very docile. If they get annoyed with something (or someone) they almost always walk away. They’re also great with children, they are natural babysitters. They sense that children are small and fragile, so they’re gentle with them. You do have to be careful that they don’t sit on a small child, or accidentally knock them over with their tail, but otherwise it’s a perfect breed for families.

I don't like to spoil your believes, but the original Sint Bernards at the swiss monastery did not carry a vessel with brandy around their necks, because alcohol dilutes the bloodvessels and that would only result in an even faster cooling down of the body of tje person in distress. It is just a romanticized version thet we all came to know thanks to an English painter named Edward Lanseer who portrayed the Sint Bernard with this vessel in one of his paintings around 1820.

My mum had a Saint Bernard growing up, Taydie, who was rehomed to them at 2 years old so she was massive from the get go. The dog was restricted just to the kitchen since that was tile and easily cleaned, but she would sleep in front of the kitchen door so when my Nan (who couldn't walk or stand too well) would come down to start breakfast, she'd have to heave the door open. Taydie got her own dog house eventually which, thanks to her size, was basically just a shed. RIP Taydie, a good (& heavy) girl to the end

A lot of much smaller dogs are much higher strung, jumpy, and aggressive because they’re terrified of everything. Just look at Chihuahuas. But when you’re as big as a Saint Bernard and weight 200 pounds plus, what do you have to be afraid of? You’re bigger than everybody else. The gentle giant label is so appropriate for them because it’s true.

These big dogs may not be overtly nervous - as a general observation. But I have several friends who are elderly who got "bumped" in a friendly way by their big dog, and now they have fractures as a result. Great Danes, Rhodesian ridge-backs come to mind. We all know of big people who are gentle and who can be clumsy.

I know that this is a joke, but in all seriousness chihuahuas can naturally be very loving. Due to improper care, many chihuahuas seem monstrous. Behavior that would be unacceptable in larger dogs is tolerated in smaller dogs, and just like a child if they learn it's okay to act a certain way they might just do that.

This is also something that a lot of brachycephalic dog owners need to be aware of. (Most brachys are "wrinkly" which pushes the skin around the face into uncomfortable positions.) As long as you have one from a decent breeder, or that's been properly looked after, they should be fine as the owner will have started treatment early. But it's not always a one and done. As they grow they might need a repeat operation or two. 😉

What a majestic dog. I loved everything about him from his marking and color to his very sweet personality. Such a joy to watch him have a spa day.

What a superbly well mannered and all round good boy - just as well, there wouldn't be a thing anyone could do if this complete unit got a bit spicy! It did look like the clippers tickled his paws a bit - but that looked like all the resistance. Otherwise what fantastic patience he has, what a credit to his breed.

I absolutely have always adored Saint Bernards. He is exquisite. Gentle giants. He even says thank you at the end. Trying to love on you. Getting pets.

It was 2011, I was turning 21 and I wanted my own little fur baby. We already had a teacup Poodle but it was attached to my mom, and I wanted my own little dog. We went to the shelter SPECIFICALLY for a small breed dog, but I end up with Lady, a 5 year old black labrador retriever. As soon as I walked up to her cage we instantly connected, among all the other dogs there she was the only quiet one and she followed me back and forth from her two way cage doors. I took her home and named her Luna, I had her for 10 years, she helped me greatly with my depression. I loved her so much. But to answer your question, no, I didn't plan on bringing a horse into my home, it just came to be that way.

my neighbours used to have a St. Bernard named Bailey, she was one of the sweetest dogs i've ever known. she'd just lay in their front yard and let all us kids pet her. they moved probably...thirteen? maybe fifteen years ago and i sometimes think of Bailey and miss her, she was so sweet and nice.
