As a large breed dog owner, I can confirm that I did indeed wake up one day and decide I wanted a horse in my house. As I described it to my family when they questioned my sanity, I said, "I want people to have to do a double take when I walk him because I want them to be unsure if I'm walking a bear, a small horse, or an unreasonably large dog." I got exactly what I wanted. My family continues to question my sanity, but they love my dog.

My university had three St Bernard therapy dogs that would come in during finals week-Bea, Bobo, and Boomer. They were such sweethearts, they’d all just flop down on the floor of the library and let a gaggle of students surround them for pets and cuddles. Boomer starting coming to campus as a puppy, and even as he got fully-grown he still tried to sit on people’s laps like he was still a little puppy 😂

I grew up with St. Bernards and Newfoundland’s in our home. We never had a problem with any of these dogs being mean or aggressive. You can brush them, wash them, trim their fur, cut their nails, use noisy electric shavers....as long as you’re not causing them any pain, they will be very docile. If they get annoyed with something (or someone) they almost always walk away. They’re also great with children, they are natural babysitters. They sense that children are small and fragile, so they’re gentle with them. You do have to be careful that they don’t sit on a small child, or accidentally knock them over with their tail, but otherwise it’s a perfect breed for families.

I don't like to spoil your believes, but the original Sint Bernards at the swiss monastery did not carry a vessel with brandy around their necks, because alcohol dilutes the bloodvessels and that would only result in an even faster cooling down of the body of tje person in distress. It is just a romanticized version thet we all came to know thanks to an English painter named Edward Lanseer who portrayed the Sint Bernard with this vessel in one of his paintings around 1820.

The gentle giant label is so appropriate for them because it’s true.

These big dogs may not be overtly nervous - as a general observation. I know that this is a joke, but in all seriousness chihuahuas can naturally be very loving. Due to improper care, many chihuahuas seem monstrous. Behavior that would be unacceptable in larger dogs is tolerated in smaller dogs, and just like a child if they learn it's okay to act a certain way they might just do that.

@andrewb61942 жыл бұрын
TBF, Dire Wolves aren’t as big as people tend to imagine In Height and Length, they’re about the same size as Canadian Northwestern Wolves and the biggest Eurasian Wolves, which are the largest modern wolf subspecies. However, in weight, Dire Wolves are about 130-150 pounds (or 60-70 Kilograms). This is far heavier then most modern wolves. (Ironically, they’re still lighter then this Saint Bernard)
@kanishkanvariketta97012 жыл бұрын

This is also something that a lot of brachycephalic dog owners need to be aware of. (Most brachys are "wrinkly" which pushes the skin around the face into uncomfortable positions.) As long as you have one from a decent breeder, or that's been properly looked after, they should be fine as the owner will have started treatment early. But it's not always a one and done. As they grow they might need a repeat operation or two. 😉

When I grew up this one person in my neighborhood had a chihuahua and one St. Bernard. It would look so funny to see them out on walks because of the different sizes of the dogs. Apparently they were very well matched because they needed about the same amount of physical activity (she explained that even if the St. Bernard was a big dog, it needed calm walks due to its heart and a chihuahua is not a dog you take on intense long walks).
