You can’t blame this guy for panicking, but something you could do if this happens to you is while you’re on the phone with this guy, you could call your daughter or wife from another phone to see if she’s really with this guy and temporarily mute the phone you’re talking to the guy on. Or if you can’t get to another phone, write on a piece of paper and have somebody else call them. The way the guy just flat out said he needed THAT MUCH money and how he specifically said for cocaine for a cartel combined with the fact that it’s over the phone, sounded like complete horseshit the second I heard that part. Also, if something like this happens to you, you could say prove it’s my daughter and ask him what your pets name is or a cousins name or something to prove it.

Something similar happened to my wife's grandparents. Fortunately her grandparents called the person who was supposedly stuck in jail in Mexico and knew it was a scam. They said it was very intense and the scammers were very convincing though.

Not to long ago my Grandma got a phone call and the guy on the other end said that he was my cousin and that he was in a Brazilian jail and needed money for bail. This phone call lasted about twenty minutes or so but from what my grandma said she eventually hung up to call the bank or whatevea but decided to call my aunt first to see what was up and my aunt called my cuz real quick then called back to let my grams know that it was a scam. The number on the caller ID that she showed me was like 20 #s long and couldn't be called back. These scammers have been getting crafty. My cousin is retired from the military and he travels alot, Brazil, India, ect ect so it wasn't far fetched that he would be in Brazil.

I actually heard of this scam a few weeks ago. The one I read about was done when the kid is overseas, on vacation or something. By the time they get to the hotel to call their parents back the money has already been transfered. When you hear something's happened to your kid you don't ask questions and you act as quick as possible.

Be careful of what you let your kids post online. Preferably it would be nothing but video and audio can be ripped or just immitated. Never send gifts cards because once those are sent, they are gone. Never send cash, or wired payments. All scammers use this as method of payment to not be traced.
