I’d like to share you a story about someone I know who was crippled with depression for a long time, and got better:
The other day I was lying on the couch, feeling paralyzed with depression. As I lay there, I was powerless to move. I was crippled by the overwhelming feelings of irritability and dread that so often accompany depression. Probably an hour or so past before I felt capable to do anything…. I mindlessly surfed my phone and social media for something, anything to dissipate the the deep cloud of depression that loomed overhead….. I’ve had experiences like this before. These feelings were always amplified when I was alone, because it was easy for me to escape reality in these circumstances.”
But something finally clicked in my brain that morphed my depressive cloud into a thunderstorm. I began to use self-talk that I’ve cultivated over the last decade, and dug deep into my heart and willpower. I said to myself, “You cannot do this any longer. You will not let this day pass you by. You WILL NOT STAY ON THIS COUCH ANY LONGER. It’s time to go to the gym.” I said it OVER, and OVER, and OVER again with a resounding conviction. This grew within me like a crescendo.
“You cannot do this any longer. You will not let this day pass you by. You WILL NOT STAY ON THIS COUCH ANY LONGER. It’s time to go to the gym.”
And so I did. Just like that. I had no desire to move with the way I felt, and that is the trickery of depression. It feels like the flu of the brain. It consumes all motivation and desire to do good for your wellbeing. Sometimes you have to dig deep. Real deep.
In case you hadn’t caught on, that story was me. I did not mean to make this vain by reading a story about myself, but I think it illustrates a point, that … in healing from any physical, spiritual, or mental challenge, one must first learn to love themselves…. And that’s hard when you have depression. But you CAN do it.
I’ve been coping with depression and anxiety for greater than a decade. Few have researched this topic more than me. I do not believe there is a cure for Major Depression in most recurrent cases. The statistics are stacked against you. It can however be managed, and most of the time for most people, very well. It’s all about building your toolbox.
Symptoms may come and go like the wind, but the more time spent learning these skills of management, the more you will be empowered to live and even thrive with your condition. Even though I have some difficult setbacks, I now manage my depression without any medications.
I began to learn things like cognitive behavioral therapy, meditation, cleaning up my diet for depression. And it worked.
So If my story touched your heart, please share this video with a person you know struggles with Major Depression.

I love your videos, man. Your channel has been a blessing for me. I had a major hip surgery 8 months ago where my femur was cut in half and rotated... Long story short, I was laid up on a recliner and spent 3 months on crutches. I now realize I already had postural issues, but everything combined caused massive muscular imbalances and postural issues. My leg got better, but I developed chronic muscular pain around my chest and neck. The pain prevents me from doing everything I enjoy and it's been very depressing. Thank for you the content

They are mind, thought and consciousness. I'm learning about this myself with a therapist. It's about realising we create our own reality from the inside out, rather than from what is actually happening out there. It's very simple but also mind -blowing. We can convince ourselves of all sorts of things that aren't true but through repetition we hold on to all sorts of stress-raising stuff. For example some of mine could be I'm stubborn, always back at square one, not very sure of myself. These beliefs can easily be triggered, but we need to step back and question them, and realise they are just a story which has hijacked us in a stress response. As I said look online and find out more, perhaps find someone to help you. All the best.

Dr. Chris Sovey Thanks. I meant to write further yesterday ( in response to your more recent video). I have recently been introduced to the work of Byron Katie, totally amazing. Check out her book/s, also everything is in the work.com, all free, but a little confusing to start off. Hear her in action on a podcast, The work of Byron Katie. Truly, this is something you can apply, it helps you to let go of all that self-hurting, self-justifying stuff, enabling you to be calm, and therefore put energy into something positive. Of course all these paths are leading to the same thing, but this is definitely something working for me.

Got a lot of admiration for you Chris. Every time I feel my depression is getting better something happens. I lost my dog, my baby boy Kashmir, last year to epilepsy and he was only 4. To date this is the hardest thing I've ever had to deal with. I still cry almost every day, I've been referred to see a mental health care nurse but the waiting list is about 40 weeks. I know grief is a difficult thing to deal with and there is no easy fix but I'm hopeful that I'll learn more techniques to help me with my pain. I miss him terribly, he was just a big, loving, fun pup. Wish I knew why he was taken and yet so much evil gets to walk the earth, that I will never understand. Thanks Chris x

Dr. Chris Sovey thanks Chris. I really appreciate the effort you put into these videos and commenting and sharing is the least I can do for the help you've given me. If used correctly, they're so much help and support on social media. Thanks again Chris

Chris, take a look at the 3 principles, it shows us that the thoughts we have about ourselves aren't real even though they seem to be. Thoughts produce feelings in our bodies, one thought creates another and can lead to physical symptoms. You can find similar teachings in lots of places. I hope this is helpful. Thank you for your videos and honesty.
