Thanks Rob. I switched to trad as my left arm really suffers following 3 shoulder ops. Plus my joints click as I'm whipping, I'm 46 and fibromyalgia is setting in and I'm not sure how long I can keep going for. In trying to follow your videos and work out why I'm not improving, I simply cannot play for longer than 10 minutes without severe pain. I love the feel trad gives me but I can barely play matched anymore. Thanks for helping prolong my joy a bit longer ❤❤

Thanks for the video. I find that when using traditional grip my thumb tends to come off the stick on my left hand, which also leads to it not striking the head accurately. Any suggestions? Thanks

I learned traditional grip originally. My teacher was a jazz/bebop guy. I switched to matched grip playing rock, now i use both depending on what im playing.

This is the reason that I switched to matched grip years ago. But my hands have never been as good as they were playing traditional grip. Maybe I'll try traditional again. Thanks Rob! 🥁❤️

10 years into traditional grip, I can say it’s the same for me…and probably everyone else that’s proficient in both grips. Matched is just an instinctively natural grip and will always feel better. I still use both straight up the middle and have fun with either one.

Been playing traditional grip since marching band days. When I switched to drum kit, my biggest problem was how to hit the cymbals correctly with my left hand. Right was no problem - but angles for the left? And getting the same strength of hit with the left hand while still getting that figure 8 motion I was using for my right. Just wasn't happening. Feels more like a flick than a nice swat. I would love a video on how to hit cymbals with your left hand for traditional grip! I've looked everywhere on KZbin for one, and haven't found anything. I keep watching famous traditional grip players to figure out how they've got their cymbals angled ... but would be so great to have a tutorial on this. Also on hi hats. I have all my toms and snare angled for traditional grip, but the hats are flat and at the height I like them relative to my snare, I just don't have a good angle for that left hand. Again, trying to watch KZbin videos of trad grip players to see what they're doing for two-handed hi hat work - but this would be another great video for you to do, if you have the time! Thanks for your awesome channel. :)

Been a matched player for YEARS but learned trad early on. Problem is I love the look , feel, and utter coolness of traditional but I believe it's an arthritis problem that's keeping me from sticking with it. Definitely suits my jazz clothes behind the kit 😉

Interestingly, when you watch Buddy Rich soloing, he could really lock in on the left hand when he had to. Whilst he had incredible control, he had immense strength as well.

I recently switched back to traditional. Playing on different house kits, I still sometimes struggle with getting that rimshot. Usually, sitting lower on the throne helps. That way, I'm sitting up straight and not doing that leaning down to the left thing.

Of course im super NOOB so take anything I say with a grain of salt and be gentle with me lol..BUT..its almost like someone held sticks incorrectly and called it traditional. Like they thought holding one stick in the most awkward way possible genius and labeled it the gold standard. I know..i know..remember..im NEW lol...

It's called traditional because it's been around since the snare drum players in military marching bands. They had the drum tilted to one side so it was more comfortable to march and walk around while wearing it, and that led to the left hand using traditional grip to compensate for the tilted angle of the drum.

I switched for matched grip for a few reasons. Left shoulder, précision with the left hand, being able to play a cascara on the HH or a ride with the L hand. I added campanas and wood-blocks on my kit, and I feel more confortable, even if I lost some speed. The traditional grip was invented to play a military drum, it's useless and a pain in the ass on a drum kit. But it's pretty.

It can be comfortable, and you can get it to feel quite good after a lot of work. But it certainly ain’t natural.

@@RobBeatdownBrown I played trad grip for decades, and was very comfortable. It didn't handicap me on marimba, with four mallets (using the Gary Burton grip), and as long as you play bop, it's not a problem. But you cannot play open-handed with the trad grip, and for latin stuff, I prefer. I pretend I'm Simon (minus the talent).

My traditional grip is pretty solid on the back beat and ghost notes but when I go to do a fill or crash my left cymbal I feel like I’m throwing a baseball with my left hand. 😂

I no longer play traditional. I like the whole hand taking the shock from the rim shot. That little thumb joint does hurt with rim shots. And setting up a kit is easier and faster. And since more people play matched, it's easier to sit in on someone else's kit without adjusting anything.

Great lesson as always beatdown! Do you adjust snare height or angle when playing traditional grip as compared to matched grip?
@RobBeatdownBrown
@RobBeatdownBrown 10 ай бұрын
Some will say you can’t find a happy medium for both, but you can. I did, anyways. My snare sits relatively flat with just a barely noticeable tilt forward. I flip flop back and forth between grips so I need a neutral height so it feels just as comfortable either way.

Rob is Stewart Copeland the reason you got into traditional grip and Paiste cymbals?
@RobBeatdownBrown
@RobBeatdownBrown 10 ай бұрын
Stewart was the first guy I SAW use it, but I got into it because of Vinnie. The Paiste thing just kinda fell into my lap. Always wanted to play them, but couldn’t afford them at the time. Then a few years after my channel started cookin they actually contacted me 🙏🏽

My biggest issue with Traditional grip is crashing on cymbals with my left. I get that "jazz crash" instead of getting power behind it. Just can't seem to get the angle correct for power on a cymbal. Any advice there?

I thought the traditional grip was used by marching drummers who wore the drum on the side . This makes sense. For me personally it looks and feels awkward.

Why does every drummer who plays traditional grip have their left shoulder lower than their right?? Looks like they have a 20lb weight on their left shoulder. "The UNNATURAL GRIP." Why does every drummer who's playing match then switches to traditional ALL OF A SUDDEN their should GOES DOWN! Lol ya gotta love the unnatural grip. And yes I do play traditional, not sure why tho
