Allelys are currently transporting this Hyosung supergrid transformer cradled within a girder frame trailer, pulled and pushed by two MAN TGX tractors. The load itself weighs 178 tonnes. The supergrid transformer is being delivered to the new Bengeworth Road Substation in South London.
The 400kV Bengeworth Road Substation in Lambeth will be the first in the country to be sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) free. National Grid and Linxon are working on the new substation as part of the £1billion London Power Tunnels 2 project.
The City of London Police joined Essex Police to escort the wide load from Tilbury to M25 Junction 9, where it will wait in a layby before being moved into the heart of London. Several police cars closed roads as the oversized load moved at slow speeds, avoiding certain weight restrictions by taking an extensive route through Tilbury and Greys in Essex.
