I'm a proud owner of the Nakamichi Soundwafe. I have the single subwoofer version, but it has been worth every penny. I never thought I would be on board with a surround system that didn't have a receiver, but this has been perfect for my room. I registered the product at some point because I got an invite to this CES event where they demoed it in a suite. Much to my surprise, I was one of the first six home consumers to experience and hear the audio demo. The only people who'd received the demonstration before our group was the press. I was not very familiar with the history of Nakamichi and the Dragon product. The demo started with a trip down the Dragon memory lane which was a fun creation story. I didn't have to wait long to hear and witness the audio demonstration. Blown away, and when I learned of the price, it didn't surprise me. I felt this would be a more expensive system than any other home theater purchase I'd made. That includes television. But it's a purchase I would love to make and pushes me to hustle harder. I love that there are wireless speakers and no issues with latency that I heard or foreseen. Anyone lucky enough to get their hands on this beast will be proud to show the system off.

It will be "Back" once it starts making high end cassette decks again. Soundbars are silly. Discrete large speakers for Atmos setups are the ONLY way to do it right. Go to a high-tech theater. Atmos still isnt as good as regular DTS, Atmos has half the bitrate of DTS and Atmos, is essentially Dolby Digital but with more speakers. With Atmos, stuff sounds ok it just has more speakers and that deceives normies with bad ears but you cant shake the feeling you are watching a movie and stuff in front and around you isnt real, good but not real, whereas with DTS, you hear stuff as if it was there in front or around you for real. Such a shame streaming companies use Dolby Digital to accelerate what is streaming, it deceives people into thinking they are getting the best when is not.

I worked with Niro Nakamichi a few years ago as they asked me to help with audio research/demos and for me to promote their product while mixing music and tv shows. Niro was the nicest guy and the stuff he designs has always been legendary let alone extreme top of the line. If it's expensive, there's a reason and it's because it's the best. The absolute best. Anything Nakamichi is timeless and stunning in my opinion. His Niro 5.1 systems blew me away and I still use the demo version that I received to this day in order to watch all of my movies at home. It's earth shaking and such a small footprint, yet envelopes each person in the room with amazing surround sound. Since this is Atmos and I'm an expert in this field, I'm really looking forward to hearing how it turned out.

@@Spit87 Yes, the Shockwafe. My only personal gripe is the lack of bass when you're sub 10 on the volume scale; it goes to a 100. My livingroom is approximately 400 sq feet and ceilings are 15 feet but it's not totally enclosed we have one of those floorplans with the island kitchen next to the livingroom. That's to say that this thing is so powerful that when we watch movies we've never had the need to exceed 35 on the volume. For music I've turned the surround speakers, bass, and treble volume setting all the way up and had to stop at 70 from things falling off my walls.

For a FOUR subwoofer setup, a $3500 premium soundbar setup is a great deal. An Sennheiser Ambeo Max plus one subwoofer runs $3200. A HT-A9 plus subwoofer or a Sonos Arc plus two subs runs about $2700. But I think what will make/break the product at very top is its DSP and room calibration, a la an actual receiver.

$3500 is totally a deal for what you get. Likewise you can not get separates with the same quality of components, channels, amp power, etc for anywhere near this price. This is one reason high end soundbar's are a steal.

LUL... you're right... you can get a BETTER sounding receiver and separates for about HALF that price.
@iogpurge
@iogpurge Жыл бұрын
@itsneight1260 not really. A receiver capable of powering 11+ channels is about $2k. The speakers and subs I guess it just depends on specs and it's hard to say without hearing it. I feel like these things could be cool for very specific room setups but most people probably have big open rooms with hard floors and spending all that money just to have mediocre sound due to room design seems like a waste.
@zeroa69

@@iogpurge you can add a movie theater level amp like a good ol crown into your system and run a dozen speakers with ease for a fairly reasonable price compared to this.
@iogpurge
@iogpurge Жыл бұрын
@zeroa69 even so, you need a processor and those are extremely expensive too. Receivers typically only have pre-out on higher end models and only for a specific amount of speakers. If this soundbar is HDMI2.1 you need to compare similar speced receivers and processors as well. You guys are trying to compare some old receiver that probably doesn't support atmos or hdmi 2.1 with this product here. Last but not least is running dedicated amps for each speaker is just a headache when you don't build your own theater or open up the walls. You guys just aren't being very realistic.

I have the 9.2.4 ultra atmos (prior to the eArc Iteration) These babies have easily notched themselves as king of the mountain. Which in turn brought out the competition in samsung and sennheiser etc. For a few years there's been a back and forth war with the competition coming for Nakas throat..Nakamichi has patiently waiting watchingthe battleon the side lines..but now they've seem enough and coming out swinging taking on all comers. You'd be well over 3500 if you bought an AVR that can handle 11 channels, 6 upfiring speakers plus 4 subs. I dont know of a receiver that can handle all of those channels on its own so you'd need to pre-out channels to an external amp. Have the 990b soundbar as a precursor for a more expensive setup. Was expecting to do an 8000ish system perhaps svs or mix but now actually considering this as a pretty big upgrade from 990b.. with how 990b sounds good this new nakamichi system may sound just right saving me 4000 bucks. Am I dumb??

I would not order the Dragon if my life depended on it. Have had the Nakamichi Shockwafe Ultra 9.2 eARC for around a month now and it is nothing but trouble. Brand new, out of the box, one of the subwoofers did not work at all. I contacted the "Ninja" support group by email and eventually one of their people contacted me, the emails led to a phone call. He guided me to remove the 10 screws that hold the amplifier assembly in the subwoofer and pull out that electronic component. Turns out there was a cable disconnected inside that subwoofer. Not the cable the "Ninja" told me would be disconnected, it was another one. So you know what that means, other cables in their new equipment have gone out disconnected. Then, after all the set-up, the rear speakers have to be set on 10 (max) just for them to add any presence to the mix. The "Ninjas" had no answer for this except to set to all stereo mode. Why would it make sense to run a surround system in stereo? Beginning yesterday, the subwoofers pop and gurgle, a horrible sounding distorted electronic noise. So far, no "Ninja" help. The subwoofers and connected surround speakers pop and gurgle on anything I listen to. Tried unplugging and resetting everything, no help. Originally I thought about waiting and buy the Dragon when available. At this point I am so glad I did not. Why risk twice as much for more junk? Just a note, I am not a novice with surround systems. I've had several since the late 80's, some with large, amplified receivers and large full sets of speakers in 7.1. You can take these comments with a grain of salt, but think about it before you buy.

Wow - good to hear that Nakamichi is putting out great equipment again. I had a Nakamichi cassette deck back in the 70s that pretty much blew away any other cassette deck you could get, and it's not like cassettes were exactly the best medium for high-end audio.

Back in 1996, for my birthday, my wife surprised me with a Nakamichi 6 disc in dash cd player installed in my 2006 BMW M3. It was such an advancement in technology at the time, having 6 cds in the dash instead of the trunk, I was in awe of the sound quality, the design, it was so compact, the looks and feel of it, it was amazing for about 8 hours. When I woke up, the $3,200 Nakamichi was stolen out of my M3, it was a clean job, the first thing I asked my wife, "did you put down our address on the paperwork"? she said "yes, why"? I told her because those fools came for it last night. I went down to the shop, and what a surprise, one of the installers was an old friend from high school, I asked him if they sold my wife a Nakamichi car stereo and then stole it a a few hours later? He laughed, I got my Nakamichi re-installed again. That's a lesson to y'all, don't put your address on the paperwork.

This is the only thing worth considering if I were to replace my Panasonic JZW200 plus Yamaha NS-SW300 for a bigger laser TV plus soundbar. With the Panasonic I went for convenience of having the sound built-in, just added the sub, and I feel the Nakamichi is a perfect upgrade in terms of sound while not requiring the built-in speakers of my TV, allowing me to go to laser TV. 3500 buck? Not a steal but not overpriced either...

Great Review Caleb. I've had my NAKAMICHI ShockWafe 7.1.4 for about three years now. Thought about upgrading to the SONY HT-A9. But the ShockWafe is still holding its own. And going for a system with TWO powerful Subs in a New York City studio apartment would have my neighbors chasing Me out with torches. And being one of those borderline "Gen X/Baby Boomer" folks, having a NAKAMICHI product makes up for not being able to afford that Crazy-ASS Dragon Cassette Deck that the company produced during The 80s. Which I guess makes Me part of the NAKAMICHI "Cult" now. Glad you got to review this new product. Because I keep hearing about how NAKAMICHI tends to be very selective about reviews.

LLNYRN - could it be that Nak’s “selectivity” is a case of their relatively lower production capacity as compared to say, the Sound United family? I’m a member of the boomer generation (71yo) who can remember the disruption that Nakamichi Research Corporation made in the audio industry with the introduction of their own name branded products in the mid ‘70s after being an OEM maker for decades prior. Being - to borrow Andrew Robinson’s self description- a bit of a recovering audiophile myself, I can fondly remember the vertigo from riding that FOMO carousel of at least quarterly equipment upgrades, and yet one of the least rotated component in my system was the Nak LX3 cassette deck. Of course, as with any such long lived audio manufacturer (75 yrs in this case) with extensive range of product types and prices, and changes in management and engineering staff there’ve been hits and misses in their product lines. Were I in the market to make a drastic change in the constitution of my current 7.1 surround system, the Dragon is certainly one of which I’d love an in home audition. Having taken a brief look at the technical specs, it certainly appears that Nak has done their home work; will it fulfill all the needs of the most critical audio/videophile? Name me any current make model that can. Will they be able to upgrade to future feature sets via firmware upgrades? Perhaps as well as any current brand is committed to. As for the grumbling over price, I can guarantee you there are folks who’ve spent far more on just the multitude of high-end power, interconnect and speaker cables required by a fully separate component system. Rant mode off.

I wonder if this system will have Dirac onboard for room correction. Even though this would be awesome for the extra entertainment room the main home theater would have a true setup. Always been a fan of Nakamichi since the 70's. Had a Dragon turntable and ZX9 cassette deck. Funny thing is I'm now debating on a brand new HT system replacing my existing 7K system so the Dragon system would be half that price. The reason I'm replacing the system is that, try as I might (and I've spent countless hours trying), I've never been happy with the 7.2 setup - especially integrating my 2 SVS PB1000 subs. I'm satisfied it's not the subs or speakers - but the room itself is the gremlin. Thanks for the review. Did Nakamichi give you any time frame when this system will be available?

That is nearly 4 times the price of Samsung Q990b (at least in my region). I was already stretching my budget with Samsung, but I love it, I also never go past 20 volume because my family and neighbours say that it is too loud already at this point. 3500USD, which probably would translate to 4500USD in my region if at all is exorbitant. Will definitely buy the Dragon system and compare to the Sony HT A9. What I miss is true stereo separation for music listening. Neither the Sonos nor the Dragon can provide that. It’s only a center sound bar. The Sony HT A9 does make THE best wireless surround system so far with amazing Atmos effects, amazing and crisp sound and all while providing true stereo music listening capabilities with 2 separate front / right speakers!! Stereo separation that is also audible from a decent listening distance requires separate front left and right speaker placement over multiple feet in distance. Nothing any soundbar could provide. Also many inexperienced and/ or unknowing people place their traditional left and right speaker waaaay to close to each other (eg next to the TV). Tear does nothing for real stereo.
