Durians have earned a bad reputation the world over thanks to their unique odor. But that hasn’t stopped connoisseurs from burning a fortune to acquire these coveted fruits, especially the ones grown in Thailand’s Nonthaburi province near Bangkok. A durian of the Kan Yao variety from here sold for nearly $48,000 at an auction a few years back, making it to the Guinness records for the world’s most-expensive durian.
We travelled to the farmlands of Nonthaburi and met durian farmers to understand what makes the fruit so special and why they think it’s not overpriced.

I have one gan yao tree, looking beautiful at age 3.5. I doubt ill have the market for a $200 durian let alone the 48k king of durian bidder. Fingers crossed for the ultra rich durian lover to move to lava zone 1.
