The frostsave valves have to be installed in a manner, that the tube can run empty. If there's a hose attached it can't drain allways and can freeze. Another failure can be, that the automatic air valve is blocked. Sometimes these air valves got destroyed, because it is plastic instead of brass or bronce. I think, that I covered the most common possible failures. There are many more possibilities.
@ypop4174 жыл бұрын
That was my thinking as well. I had one fail because the house lost heat but that was on the other side of the valve. VERY cold winter and the heating system could not keep up, if I remember the temp dropped below -45 F (electric hot water heat) Should have never been OK for use in Canada.

My 3/4 inch drive Proto ratchet uses 12 x 24 screws to hold the side plate on. I bought three 12 x 24 screws at Home Depot for around $4.00 plus tax. I later went to a real screw and bolt store and bought a bag of 100 for the same price. Looking forward to your 235 Blue Flame Chevy engine story. Chevy also made a larger six cylinder engine based on the 235 engine. It was the 261 Jobmaster that was used in larger trucks and school buses. The 261 has a larger bore than the 235, but has the same stroke. Over the years there has been a large amount of speed equipment made for the famous Chevy inline engine and many of those parts are still being made today. I had 27 early Chevy 6 engines and lots of hop up parts 10 years ago when I got real sick and sold them all along with my 56 Chevy sedan I had owned for 34 years. I did keep all my tools tho and now just play with small antique cast iron air cooled engines. Keep up the good work.

I recently bought one of those magnifiers from Harbor Freight for when I was soldering header strips on Arduino boards. It uses a velcro mechanism for the headband and when I expanded it enough for my head, it wouldn't stay attached and would fall off. My hat size of 8 3/4, so it doesn't work well if you have a large head, but if you have a small head, it might work better. And the #12 machine screws are available at Home Depot... Regarding the KUM pencil sharpener, the side that just removes the wood, is used by old school draftsmen (Yes I am one) who still like to use wooden drafting pencils. After you remove the wood, you use a sandpaper pencil pointer to shape the lead to you own specs for the type of work you are doing.

Lyle, couple of reasons for the "freeze" proof spigots to freeze, one is leaving a hose on it and having a small leak in the spigot. Even a small, slow drip will eventually fill the hose and freeze back up into the the spigot assembly. Once a ice plug develops in the hose, it works it's way up and pressurizes the remaining water towards the spigot valve. This develops an over pressure and bursts the pipe. The second reason is the spigot assembly us not mounted with a slope away from the water source. The water needs to be able to drain out of the spigot. Again a small leak will cause an ice plug to form and eventually burst the pipe. Contrary to popular belief it's not the ice that bursts the pipe, it's the over pressure of the remaining water. Interesting subject, lots of physics involved.

@VC-Toronto4 жыл бұрын
Installed one at a friends house some years back, angled down correctly. He forgot to remove the hose at the end of the season, and the section just inside the foundation swelled and cracked when it froze. (the section of copper didn't have the ability to drain dry) His mom came to his house in the spring and went to water the flowers and opened up the valve. Long story short, a vast quantities of water in the basement (we had just finished the basement not long before) before anyone realised it was pouring out into the basement as well as coming out of the hose outside.
@rrabbit19604 жыл бұрын
Good morning Mr. Pete! The frost proof spigot froze and burst because water got trapped in the pipe between the valve seat and the hose connection. There are a couple possible reasons: 1, the vacuum break (the plastic part at the top of the outside section) failed to let the water drain out and 2, the hose was left connected. Most likely #2-I've been guilty of forgetting to disconnect the hose myself so I've had to replace a couple over the years. A Third possibility is that the bib was/is pitched back into the house instead of being level or pitched slightly downward. As a side note: in my neck of the woods we call them "spickets" LOL. Have a great day!
@dannyl25984 жыл бұрын
Thank you Mr Pete. Leaving the hose connected will cause those valves to freeze and split like that. Also if they are not angled down towards the spigot so they can drain, that could happen. Thanks for an enjoyable visit.

Hi Lyle. I get all notification of your new videos. The cracked copper pipe was likely caused by leaving the un-drained hose connected to the spigot. The hose acted as a collector and pulled all the heat out of the frost proof valve. He is lucky that only the valve cracked. He could have had a flooded home. Part of snow bird preparation is to disconnect all outside hoses before leaving on migration.

I don’t get an email notification but I get a notification while on KZbin that there’s a new video. I could see someone spending that amount on that welded vise if they were going to use it for decoration in a restaurant, etc. My guess is the frost-free spigot wasn’t slightly slanted down in the front so all the water could properly drain out when shut off. I’m sure the cold worked it’s way through the pipe to the water and froze if there wasn’t enough heat or warm air movement in that particular area of the house.

Hey Lyle. I know something like this must have happened to you. I bought a new storm door and installed it myself. You can install it as a left or right hand door, so you have to drill the holes for the door handle yourself. One of the holes says 5/8”. My drill set goes up to 1/2”, and my hole saw set goes down to 7/8”, so I had to go buy a 5/8” drill bit. I went to my local Ace Hardware store and it cost me around $24 for the bit that I will probably never need to use again. The hole didn’t have to be exactly 5/8”, but the only drill bits I had close to it are masonry bits.

@@mrpete222 Hey Mr. Pete! I had a good time at Hamilton Tools. It is really overwhelming. They have been buying up the tools from an area in decline for decades. There are literally tons of tools. A ton or more each of sockets, wrenches, pliers, drills, saws, files, pipe wrenches, hammers, etc... Several tons of motors at least. In the video that another fella shot there in 2018 showed a small metal/wood lathe on the third floor for $375. I have been looking for a small lathe to do tool restoration projects ala Scoutcrafter and the like. This seemed like the perfect multi purpose little starter lathe for me, if it was still there. It was! I offered them $250, they said $300, and I accepted. My 11 year old son is so excited to start using it, he has already begun cleaning and disassembling it without direction from me. I need to get on it because I don't want to let him have all the fun! I found on vintagemachinery.org that the lathe I bought was in a 1938 Sears catalog, but is also listed up to 1941. COOL! I did not realize how old it was when I bought it! It's WW2 era! The badge on the front says Master Craftsman, and on the back it says Sears Roebuck & Co. The model number is 101-06260. There are many listings on the vintage machinery site with this model number, but most of them show it as a wood lathe only. Only a couple of the listings show it with the metal cutting chuck and machining tool holder. It must have been pricey optional equipment for that model. Anywho now I am on the hunt for a three jaw chuck, a dial indicator, and some cutters. Wish me luck! Are you interested to see pics from Hamilton Tools? I can email them to you if you like.

Agreed, the most common reason for those hydrants to freeze up, is leaving the hose attached. Also likely had a nozzle closed, so that the hose was pressurized. You can repair it by hammering the split back in shape, and solder a repair fitting over the hole. I have fixed several that way. I saw one that was repaired in place by slitting the repair fitting, and the slipping it over the hydrant, and soldering in place. As far as I know, it is still working fine, but I would feel better having a complete fitting.

While changing one, I accidentally left my pocket knife on the back side of a screen vent (you know those little vents you close around the bottom of the house in the winter time). My good knife sat there for over 2 years and I could see it but couldn't touch it. It took another forced trip under the house before I retrieved it. @kentlange53384 жыл бұрын
On the frost free faucet. My guess would be a hose was left on the faucet, not allowing it to drain. Normally, the area that you shown expanded and cracked, would be empty.

Interstate Over Passes are sopposed to be a certain height in case the Military needs to move equipment which is another reason the Interstate system was built ..This last summer in my area 2 older over passes had to be raised because several commercial drivers had hit them I wonder did they sink down over the years ???..I have seen many times the Army using the same road to transport equipment and trucks
@larryvergon67404 жыл бұрын
My guess is the bridge didn't sink, the road had raised due to repaving multiple times without grinding the old asphalt far enough down to get back to the original grade. The state should be monitoring the bridge clearance and adjusting the notification if it goes under 13' 6". Most states (all?) do yearly bridge inspections which should flag a low clearance. Another possibility is the trucks involved were hauling an over height load. Yes, sometimes the loads are not legal, but someone tries to cheat the system. My brother-in-law said he was forced to take overweight loads or go home without a load. Years ago I worked on an interstate project that contained several bridges. One of them (not opened to traffic, just over the existing road) was damaged overnight by an over height load that bent one of the steel I-Beams supporting the road bed above it and the only way we were aware of it was someone happened to noticed the damage. Apparently the truck driver vented enough air from the tires to lower the load enough to back out from under the bridge and went another way.
@not2fast4u2c4 жыл бұрын
@@larryvergon6740 It was determined they were too low ..It is odd both bridges were just for gravel roads and not an Interchange for a town..Also neither one is built as good as one for a town or city It was neat to go under and see how they jacked them up

If you do any repair or restoration of old machinery you do need to keep an eye out for obsolete threads, both inch and metric. You should always have old reference books on the shelf to help you figure out how something is put together. Just be aware these threads exist and that there may be a reason a nut or screw that looks like it should fit, won't. For instance my 1989 Taiwanese Rong Fu bench mill is put together with......Whitworth threads. If you have one of these mills, unscrew the quill locking handle and check the threads. It may look like 1/2-13UN but it may well be 1/2-12 British Standard Whitworth. Cheers from NC/USA

I used to get emails but a month or so ago I no longer get any email notifications. I can only see notifications within the KZbin app. The result is I watch about 80% less videos. A mixed blessing.

By checking the "ringing" bell for my subscribes, I get notification when I open Google (such as Google News). Then in KZbin I check the bell for all new material in my subscribe list. Otherwise no other notification which I like. I do not need any more extra mail. Mr. Pete is on the top of the list.

The garden hose was left hooked up is why it busted. Those 318's would normally get about 16mpg or so in the d100's, the 360's would only do like 10-12. Not the best on fuel but they usually didn't give much mechanical trouble with the engine. I think Fiat didn't want the Dodge name anymore so they changed them to Ram. I think corporate split them so the car side could not be siphoning money from the trucks just to stay afloat.

Harbor freight sells the same head magnifying unit for $4.99 and it has 2 lights on either side. The lights are worthless as they come, but by swapping out the incandescent bulbs for brighter leds, they aren't too bad.

To get the diameter of a numbered screw, take the number and multiply by .013" and then add .060". For example 14 x .013 + .060 =.242

Wait, 14? I was sure it stopped at 12. And I've never even seen a 12, I know they exist because they're on my tap charts., but we have no. 10 and then the next size is 1/4" (actually 5mm)

FYI I needed a set of taps for my Redding Olympic gun sight. Best price was from England. The tap was a 7/32-40 which winds up being 0.003 larger diameter than a 12-40. Sizes not often listed. It would have been nice if Eisenhower laid out the interstates with a train track down the middle. Might have save the rail industry. Works on part of the Eisenhower in Chicago.

Hi Lyle, On the split pipe, if the valve is where the pipe reduces, that outer section should not be holding water so shouldn't be able to freeze, so unless the outlet was facing upwards or a hose was left connected and wound up at a point higher than the pipe it should have drained of water. I have a nephew in Germany and they have valves inside the dwelling to outside taps, which they shut of for winter and open the external valve to drain the line downstream of the internal tap. Am I anywhere close to the cause?

If you leave a hose attached to a "frost-proof" sillcock it can trap water in the part that is supposed to drain. The water will freeze (and expand) from the outdoors inwards pushing the unfrozen water harder and harder until it splits the tube. If there is an anti-siphon fitting attached, it can also trap water if it gets clogged or corroded. Any pipe-splitting happens when a body of liquid water is trapped - trapped between two advancing ice fronts, or trapped between an ice front and a valve or other stop. A pipe freezing from one end and open at the other (into air or the main plumbing) will not burst. The ice doesn't push sideways much; it's the trapped water that accumulates pressure and eventually bursts the pipe. An ordinary sillcock can survive a freeze if the advancing ice front can push water back into the main plumbing; if there is a shutoff valve a few feet into the house and the pipe between the shutoff and the sillcock isn't drained after closing the shutoff, it can freeze and burst the pipe anyway.

Couple of answers/observations... 1. The bell next to the subscribed button determines status for the individual channel... You also have a bell in the upper right corner that has to be turned on. 2. Small screw sizes... After working on computers for 30 years, still find it odd that the screws holding in a hard drive are 6-32 (English) and those holding in a CD or DVD are 3.5-xx (Metric). (Don't remember the exact metric size. 3. Dodge trucks are now RAM... Remember when an Accura was a Honda Accura?

I had about a half dozen of those ram hood ornaments stolen off of my ram charger about 30 years ago and they weren’t cheap to replace. I actually thought about booby trapping the thing to give the thief a good shock from a coil or an extremely loud air horn blast as they tried to pull it off.

I get youtube notifications for my subscriptions a week or so after I have already watched the video, I get all excited and say to myself, "Whoo Hoo, Mr.Pete posted another video" then it ends up being something that I had already watched 10 days ago. I think the notification system itself is broken.

I’d love to hear more about that test road. Also, it’s crazy how Eisenhower built the entire interstate system in America in four years and now it takes that long to build a bridge.

He left the hose connected to the sill cock and the hose had a closed nozzle at the end. This combination would not allow the system to drain so it remained full of water clear back to the valve. Water expands axially in a tube when it freezes. This causes extreme pressure in the unfrozen water close to the valve because, as we all know water does not compress. This extreme pressure is immediately relieved by you know what! The blow out ALWAYS occurs in the unfrozen part of a tube with water in it. I did a large study on this a few years ago. BTW I no longer get email notification of your new videos. They stopped about a month ago. I will try hitting the bell again.
