Before liquid cooling, you should cut an opening in the bottom of the case where the fans should be drawing air in and glue some nylon mesh over the hole, Giving the fans relatively unrestricted airflow while having some dust prevention and see how much that improves thermals.

Sounds like a cooling mod by drilling a few small air holes over the top of the fans would do a lot to help with those in game and stress load test temperatures. I would suggest using something in the 1 to 2 mm ( 1/8 inch ) size to drill out a small pattern of holes over the tops of the 2 fans that would really do good to lower the temps and give those fans some room to breath.

Doing a couple of minor mods could improve the cooling and noise significantly I would bet. One remove the stock case feet and install some taller ones. Two modify the bottom panel so the fans have some vents directly above them. Should be easy enough as its a snap off plastic panel. Would be interesting to see how much of a difference that would make.

Nice! I wonder how it would perform if you modify the case so the fans could get better airflow. Like square holes over the intakes. Could fancy it up by adding a filter over the hole.

@dawid you never posted what paste you used either thinner pastes like kryonaut often pump out in low mounting pressure things like laptops ect. ICD or gelid gc extreme would be good pastes for this scenario. Also you should undervolt and adjust the power limits. Water-cooling would be pointless as your not thermal throttling your power limit throttling. Throttle stop using a -.125 mv undervolt and raising long power limit to 65w or 70w would more than likely net you 3.8-4.1 ghz all core permanent boost.

In my experience trying to repaste my PS4, I have discovered that applying regular thermal paste on an exposed CPU dye results in something called the pump-out effect. It's basically when the thermal paste starts oozing from the sides of the chip due to expansion and compression along with a lack of friction. It doesn't matter how much paste you apply or how you do it it will always come out from the sides. The solution is to use a higher viscosity paste or for a more robust solution, you can use thermal grizzly carbonaut. I used the latter and worked like a charm.

Awesome. What this told me is that for applications that max out the CPU/GPU, extra thermal paste and/or re-pasting or reseating your chips will not really lower chip temperatures, just as I expected. For 'regular' operations they might make your PC not work as hard with the fan, and you'll have less noise, but that's another story.

I would've used a hole saw and drilled holes the size of the fans on the intake portion of the case, then glued some mesh in, right where the fan intakes are and watch those temps fall.

Every time I had to open up this pc... I have to search for this video around 3:14 to see how it's done. I'm only saying this because I know I'll be back here in a few months searching for it again.

Not necessarily ideal but as the 'lid' is on the underside one could run the machine without it for hopefully better air flow.

i would like to see the bottom plastic panel modified for better airflow to those dual fans. Just dremel a cut out and put some kind of mesh there. Or even just drill some holes if your lazy.

i feel like if you actually cut off the bottom part (its not a bad mod as you dont see the bottom part ever) and just add some mesh to introduce some more fresh air and maybe put it on a laptop fan stand/platform to just show off its maximum potential @ stock config, without liquid cooling

I guess it's good that good computers are available out there you just have to look for them and be willing to pay the shipping and hope that there's no issues with it.

I agree with madmat below take that bottom panel off cut a rectangular hole and install a mesh vent so air can get to the fans, then put some raised feet on it to increase air flow. The ony downside to these small rigs is theyre almost all hot boxes, this shortens life and hampers performance - I think a little modding for increased air intake could easily lower temps some.

You shouldn't need much thermal paste. It sounds like there's a gap between the heatpipes and the CPU lid - something's preventing tight contact.

Get a hole saw out and make some proper positioned air intakes coupled with some taller feet. That’s would be a great first test to see how you can maximise the current setup

I’ve noticed as well. How hard it is to clean and replace thermal paste on laptop CPU’s/GPU’s or bare die’s. I put enough on and spread. But seems that I always have put more than I feel comfortable with and I get the same experience as you 🤔 I’ve been building and fixing tech for 12 years now so it’s not like I don’t know what I’m doing. I’ve messed with a full range of products from hand held to large servers and so much strange in between

If it's anything like the NUCs you should be able to undervolt the CPU for better thermals. Does it support XMP profiles? I would also be cutting better ventilation holes in the bottom and raising it up with feet.

I would be curious to see the effects of throttlestop on the CPU especially it being a laptop CPU. Using it on my laptop shaved off 10-15 degrees!

Maybe we can 3d print the lower part of the chassis and create a makeshift mount (also makeshift connector) for one 140mm PWM fan. that should help with the airflow problem.
