If you bring in a contractor don't be afraid to ask questions while work is ongoing. I never have a problem with explaining my methods of installation while work is ongoing. I'd rather you know what's going on and feeling confident in my work than always having a question in your mind. If the contractor seems bothered or gives you a response like "I'm doing it this way because it's the way we've always done it" then you may want to do some research. As a tile installer my job is not only to know how to do my job but why I use the methods and products I use. Good luck.

Note to everyone that doesn’t protect the weep holes with gravel, or says it’s unnecessary. If you plug them with mortar your pan is going to fail bottom line
@darrenr11943 жыл бұрын
Well technically sand mix can never "plug" weep holes. sand mix is porus which allows water to easily run through it (like a sponge). If you put gravel or pebbels you have a higher risk of clogging the holes. Think of it like this, The entire base is made from sand mix and water runs through it without issue. Therefore sandmix in the weep holes will allow water to run through just as easily. The female part of the drain also has knockouts in the threading which allow water to run down them. You must ensure the liner is not going INTO the female part causing it to seal off the drain ports. But yeah, been doing showers for a while now and I've seen it all! Cheers.
@Apexjasonmorganllc3 жыл бұрын
@@darrenr1194 my experience proves that each time I pull a shower apart and the weep holes are clogged there is never gravel present. They are always packed full of mortar. The chances of clogging 4 weep holes with gravel is highly unlikely, however stuff them full of mud and the chances are way higher. Yes water passes through the drypack for the life of the shower but when it reaches the drain you need to be certain that water can escape out those weep holes. I’ve yet to see one plugged up from gravel. Take care.
@darrenr11943 жыл бұрын
@@Apexjasonmorganllc Explain to me how the weep holes can be clogged with the same material that is allowing thw water to pass through in the first place? If the water clearly goes through the sand mix like a sponge then how can that exact same sand mix clog weep holes? It's like saying you made a base out of sponges and put sponges in the weep holes and those same sponges clogged it lol......
@frankcatrini4816 Жыл бұрын
@@darrenr1194 i believe your correct as water can pass thru the mud at weep holes but perhaps what is happening is along with the mud at weep holes salts, body oils, etc also coat that mud at weep holes and then it becomes clogged. i dont think it hurts to gravel that area if its done right and probably will have less of a chance to clogg.

I opened my shower drain because of sewer smell. I saw a lot black gunk (bacteria) and full of water…..definitely that’s where the smell was originating. After cleaning it out and letting it dry out, the smell went away. What I thought I found was all this hard deposit I thought was calcium buildup…all throughout the 8 weep holes and completely around the entire outer edge of the assembly. I chiseled a lot of it out , and drilled out the weep holes thinking it was hard calcium buildup. What I realize now is this MAY be mortar. It’s just like cement…very hard. I can now also see a rubber lining in some of the weep holes….just like what’s mentioned here. Any idea how to get it draining again?

That is why water weep’s up your wall, everyone blames it on embedding your concrete board into the mortar. You clog those weep holes the water backs up at the drain and begins to push back towards the wall, after enough time it goes to and up the wall. If your set your pan up properly with gravel at the drain and use a pre slope you will never ever have an issue.

The problem is you have guys that do tile flooring then they come across a shower tile job and think they can do it. Personally I like GoBoard on top of a traditional liner setup thats over a foam preslope then covered with a dry pack with a 3 piece drain properly sealed. Goboard can be in the dry pack since it wont wick up water. Concrete board, hardi backer and sheet rock set inside the dry pack WILL get wet and wick up the walls and leak. I think people dont realize that the dry pack is designed to be wet and will be wet. They assume the water wont pass through the tile and grout, which it will. Im not a big fan of the Schluter products especially the prices. You can save a day or two of time though but the system isnt flawless. If you can make a dry pack pan with a liner then you cant go wrong in my opinion.

The problem is that the weep holes around the drain were clogged by some fool that hasn’t a clue of what he’s doing. We add pee gravel around a drain so the dry pac doesn’t clog the drain. A dry pack is just that a cement based base pac that allows water to drain thru to the sub base allowing that water runoff to drain through to the sub base into weep holes allowing it to drain as a secondary measure. Water drains into the shower drain but a lot of water gets absorbed through the grout around the tile on the floor. Water draining through the grout land in the sub base. If the sub if the sub base isn’t pitched properly the draining process of a tiled shower floor becomes flawed, because no pitch water doesn’t drain and breaks down the cement grout and tile quickly. Way to much to explain here. let’s see if I’m wrong. Check out your Wikipedia pages on this subject. There’s a lot more here than most realize. Once a shower stall is compromised you’re in for trouble.

@StudPack4 жыл бұрын
My plan right now is dry pack with Kerdi membrane on top. I could use the pre-sloped Kerdi pan but it needs a level surface to sit on so I'd have to remove the existing pre-slope. Also, since the existing drain is so off center, using the foam pan creates other issues. I'll be thinking about my plan over the long weekend😊 I'm sure it will change at least 7-8 times😂 Thx JRC!

@@StudPack no problem I must have heard wrong. Dry pack and Kerdi membrane is the way to go. I typically just order a pre slope with the proper dimensions of the drain when doing this kind of work. Are you kidding? Find me a shower that is used daily that is not ALWAYS wet! Every tearout we've done (we are remodelers) is soaking wet there, but it is DRY UNDERNEATH, If water got UNDERNEATH the liner, it was probably because the original installer did not seal the liner to the bottom half of the drain with silicone. If water did NOT get underneath the liner, then you are making up a problem. You are correct in stating they didn't put pebbles around the weepholes, but that in and of itself is not considered a failure.
@StudPack3 жыл бұрын
Water didn’t get under the liner at the drain. It got behind the liner at the walls and threshold. Looking at the video... backer board seams were basically not sealed (drywall mesh tape and some red guard) plus the liner didn’t wrap over the curb.

@10:00 you say weep holes are clogged with mortar... you mean the same mortar that allowed water to get into it to get to the weep holes ? I enjoy your content , just started watching you but sometimes you have to use common sense and not what a book tells you. If water gets in mortar everywhere else then it gets into holes too plus all the troughs built into the drain. Also water will still migrate its way into the drain with the liner put into it, again there are many ways of evacuation including the threads of the drain on the inside cut outs. And of course the pan material was wet, regardless if the slope was correct the pan will always be wet because of wicking.... that's why they should have used the redgard not just on the walls but the pan surface... then the pre slope is irrelevant. As I said you have good content but you got to stop drinking the Kool-Aid
@StudPack4 жыл бұрын
The weep holes were clogged with dry pack not mortar. At that point during my examination, I wasn’t sure yet what clogged them up. Moot point however because weep holes were also sealed underneath because vinyl liner wasn’t cut back far enough. Thx for watching and commenting. I enjoy your videos 👍

@darrenr11943 жыл бұрын
StarrTile is correct about the weep holes. Drypack/Sand mix can NOT clog weep holes as it is porus and allows water flow. Anyone thinking a drypack can clog weep holes needs to use some common sense. The problem was the cross cut in the liner causing it to create a seal against the drain which made water flowing into the drain nearly impossible. (Create a mockup of the cross cut and you will see a huge difference in water flow with cross cut being left and actually cutting off the flaps in the liner that goes down the drain.)

Preslope isnt that big of deal when there is some slope. The liner was not sealed with the special adhesive around the drain flange. The weep holes were clogged and will be an issue but the water was escaping under the liner around the drain(and bolts) AND around the walls because it looks like the wall backer was touching the dry pack and wicking water up. Also, the liner was too short around the curb allowing water in from the top. On concrete its probably best to do a dry pack pre slope on top of wet troweled mortar then use the kerdi drain and water proofing membrane assuming you are going to continue with kerdi on the walls.

It is easy to say "use Kerdi system" but it is so expensive. In my opinion (I'm not a professional) you can use whatever system fallow the code, when the installer missing some step the problem show up late or early.

@@imparcialverdad6418 whatever system you go with just loom for a KZbin video that explains how to do it. I dont use kerdi much but sometimes it makes sense. They are overpriced but there are similar systems for less.

Should have tiled the floor then the walls. It would have kept the water flowing away from the shower pan edges.

That is why I installed a Corien Solid Shower Base! 3X the cost of Acrilic, but won't have this problem. Some Contractors just want to get done.

Friends don’t let friends put that wallpaper anywhere. I thought it was giant mould spores before realizing it was actually wallpaper...
