The opera voice is Patricia Carey, her mother who is a professional mezzo- soprano graduated from Juilliard. The song Oh comee all ye faithful recorded for her 2nd Christmas album. She decided to have her mother be featured and they nailed it live on ABC Mariah Careys Christmas special. BTW I love the intro!!! I so needed a "pick me up today" and seeing that you just posted this is God sent. You remind me that Mariah is my safe place

@LasageSinging I’m a new follower and watched this today which made me think of two songs immediately that I believe you’ll enjoy analyzing and hopefully post your reactions. Mariah Carey The One (Live) and I’m not sure about a live or studio recording, but the other song is titled Mine Again and both are insane examples of how seamlessly she navigates her full arsenal of vocal prowess & agility. I really enjoy the multilayered reaction posts you share, specifically featuring Mariah, because you provide real insight & education to all of those that aren’t vocalists, and even those who are, affording a deeper understanding of the A&P aspect of her incomparable instrument. Since it seems like you're REALLY into analyzing Mariah and have much respect for her as an artist as well as for her art, may I suggest you read her autobiography? It gives an insight into and an understanding of how the whisper/breathy register came to be, for example.which makes one understand her art and her musicality even more. It's even hard to explain. Now, I know you said you're not into lyrics. (I wasn't either until my mid 30s). However, Mariah is an amazing lyricists as well. She always talk about listening to the lyrics. The lyrics of her personal and emotional songs, the albums' tracks that are not hits, man! Thats a separate form of art in itself! And she's phenomenal at it! Song writing is her favorite part. Many times she had stated that. She looks at herself as a songwriter first. She started writing poetry at age 12, it was her outlet to deal with harsh reality of life she was born into. Anyway, I think you might appreciate her autobiography. Listen to it on Audible - she layers her takes on that one too, as she reads it!

In your opinion, of all the singers that you've heard enough from, would you say gun-to-your-head, you have to choose (no dodging like every other KZbinr), that Mariah is the Greatest Voice of All-Time? I just can't pick out an individual singer. Gun to my head I'd probably say Pavarotti because those are my musical sensibilities. I personally enjoy Mariah the most out of the trinity, but Whitney I wanna dance with somebody and I have nothing are the songs I played at my wedding. I personally never found Celine to be someone I was super into. I haven't listened to celine in years. Again, this does come down to preference. If singing were a sport and there were a singular win/lose situation, we could measure a victor. Tonal quality of belt? Whitney all day. Recording artist? Mariah every day. I just personally enjoy different things. There's so much you can do with the human voice. My personal taste does not equate to better or worse. We can all have a preference and we needn't justify that preference with singing technique. This discussion happened on twitter. The claim was that beyonce has a better top than mariah because of its classical leaning. Mariah specifically stated that she had no interest in singing opera. So, is beyonce better at high end opera style singing? sure. Does it matter? I don't think any mariah fan would give a shit lol.

Btw lessage WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT you had me looking for hours trying find that it was her dads studio no her brother Morgan Carey paid for her to go to the studio he was trying to be a male model so he paid for her first demo but she was working in studios since she was 12 recording demos for other artists to record. Her dad was a aeronautical engineer he was the person who designed the correct angles by using calculus to make airplane wings have the correct angles to fly and save fuel
